So far I have put 6.5 hours into Trivia Throwdown and have enjoyed all 6.5 hours of it! The game has a lot of subjects that will keep you busy and to add to the fun you also get to pick characters as your "fighter" that represents you as you try to answer questions to "beat" down your opponent. So this game isn't just a bunch of endless questions. When you start the game you get to pick your fighter as well as 2 of the 9 topics in the game that are your "go to" topics. When you start you get to pick from three topics for each question and the questions are rated by levels of 1-5 with 5 being the most difficult question., you buzz in your answer as does your opponent. If you answer correctly and your opponent answers incorrectly you land a blow of differing strengths to the other guy based on how hard the question was. Once you knock out your opponent by depleting his energy bar, round one ends. Round two goes the same. If you win both rouds you "level" up your fighter's rank. If you split the rounds your rank remains the same. Lose both and you lose a rank. The goal of course is to reach the number one rank. The game has single player and 2p local player with split screen, so you can play with your friends and family. I found the wide variety of questions to be very good, there are so many sub categories, it really keeps you on your toes. There are a couple of "power ups" of a sort to use while playing a match. One that you can use once per round to change out the full list of three topics, if you get some you are not good at. And then another power up that builds up as you play and that you can eventually use later in a round to help make your blow use more power. It's called an ante up, which you activate when you get a category you can pick that you are good at. All in all, I am really enjoying the game and would recommend the game to all that love trivia games. Rated 8/10.
in trivia throwdown knowledge is literally power, because in this trivia-beat'em up hybrid the more difficult the question, the more it hurts, especially if you don't know the answer. pick a fighter, then the two players take turns in choosing a category from 3 randomly offered ones, and you both have 15 seconds to pick one of the 4 answers. no need to buzz, just press the appropriate key. if you're both correct, nobody gets hurt, if you're both wrong, damage is divided evenly between the two players, and if one is right and the other is wrong, I think you can figure out what happens. you start at rank 10, the goal is to reach rank 1 on any or all of the 5 difficulty levels and win a match there. progress is saved separately, so you can switch between them, and if you lower difficulty, rank is kept, but obviously reaching rank 1 on easiest, then playing a match to win the whole game on hardest is not gonna work. difficulty is also somewhat adaptive, so if you keep getting things wrong, you'll get easier questions. win 2 rounds to win a match, win 2 matches to rank up. 1-1 means your rank stays the same, 0-2 means you go down a level. several fighters are available, each with their favorite categories, and while you'll be answering every question, they will come into play when your health goes below 33%, that's when you get to choose from your specialist subjects. pick harder questions to hit harder, answer several in a row to build up a combo for extra damage, and use two power-ups: shuffle categories in hopes of getting something closer to your heart (or brain, in this case), or ante up and deal extra damage if you answer correctly. you get to do the latter if you lose 50 hp. all the usual categories are present, such as games, movies, literature, history, sport, general knowledge, etc. with a ton of sub-categories and about 2500 questions covering a huge variety of subjects. they don't repeat until you've seen everything from a category, which is excellent. progress is saved after every question, quit anytime, continue later, the game doesn't waste your time. can't pause during a question, obviously, and I wouldn't mind a 'skip fight animations' toggle to speed things up even further, but that's about all the criticism I have. presentation is what it is, but the music is fantastic (separate volume settings available), and if you have people around, you can do 2-player local multiplayer, or try steam's remote play with online buddies. there's also an adult content filter (no swear words either way) and you can turn down the amount of american-centric questions too. growing up on you don't know jack and still not knowing anything about anything, I didn't mind them, always something new to learn. if you're a trivia buff or open to learning new things about all sorts of topics, some more useful than others, this is the game for you.

Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
Trivia Throwdown is a game where you’ll fight and battle your way through mountain challenges using nothing more than the power of your noggin brought to you by Eclectic City Games. On the main menu screen, you’ll have the option of playing either Ascent Mode or Two-Player Quick Match. Ascent Mode is a single player game where you make your way through five difficulty levels. These levels are named after mountains, the lowest level mountain is Wutai, then Fuji, Rainier, Kilimanjaro and finally the most difficulty level Everest. I’m like a blonde looking for a corner in a round room so I started on the lowest mountain of Wutai. You can if you want to choose and play any level at any time in any order you fancy as each level will save any progress on that level separate from the other levels. Once you’ve chosen the level to play at, you’ll then have the option of seven different characters to choose from. The characters are Bo, Kenji, (Matt) Damon, Cid, Tyranno, Mr. Jack and Virgil. Next you can choose your opponent from any of the other characters, once done you’ll then be taken to the fight screen. Here you’ll then do battle by selecting a category from three random categories offered to you. You and your opponent will take turns choosing a category and answering questions until there’s a winner. The categories on offer to you are Film & TV, Geography & Politics, Sports, Science & Technology, History, Games, Fine Arts & Literature, General Knowledge and Music. After a category has been chosen, a question will appear in the top of the screen, below this is the Timer Bar. At the same time four possible answers will be shown to you, select the correct answer before the time runs out. The answers are arranged in the centre of the screen below the question and timer, and are in the position as the A, B, X, Y buttons on an Xbox style game pad for ease if using a controller. You can also use the arrow keys or select an answer by using a mouse cursor if you please. Each of the questions range from one to five points in difficulty, and this will also determine the potential damage (eight to forty health points) given to answering a question incorrectly. If both fighters answer incorrectly then the damage will be shared between both players. The categories offered to each fighter will be determined by the performance of each fighter, so correctly answering all questions will raise the difficulty level of the categories and vice-versa. Upon your turn to choose a category you can may be take advantage of a couple power-ups, these are Refresh and Ante-Up. Selecting Refresh will allow you to replace the categories offered to you if you don’t fancy the look of them. They will be replaced with three new random categories. Ante-Up can be used if you do fancy the look of the categories, the Ante-Up when selected could possibly increase the damage given by fifty percent. However, firstly you’ll need to build up the ante-up bonus, every time you receive fifty points of damage, you’ll gain an ante-up. This is great for when you’re in a pickle and can come in handy in making a comeback. Each fighter has two Punchback Bonus, these are two preferred categories which vary depending on the fighter. The Punchback Bonus will kick in when your health falls below thirty-three percent, on your turn. You will still be offered three categories but one of those will be one of the two preferred categories for that fighter. You can also deal Combo Damage by dealing damage to your opponent three or more times in a row. If both fighters answer correctly then the combo bonus will remain, although if you answer a question incorrectly, you’ll then lose the combo bonus. To win you must be the first to claim two wins by reducing your opponent's health to zero. If you win two – zero you will then be promoted to the next rank, you start on rank ten, then nine, eight, seven etcetera. Sometimes both fighters may lose all their health at the same time, if this happens then a Tiebreaker is called. There are four possible outcomes to decide who wins a tiebreaker. A tiebreaker is determined by the Tiebreaker Priority, firstly it will be determined by HP at the time of damage (fighter with the most will win). Then Total correct answers (the fighter who correctly answers the most questions wins). Then Average correct answer difficulty (the fighter answering the higher difficulty average of questions wins) and then finally by Average speed to answer (fastest fighter to answer correctly wins). There is a Two-Player Quick Match which can be played from the same computer should you wish to test your knowledge against a family member or friends. This is setup in the same way as you would with playing single player except for having another player. On the main menu screen, you can also find Analytics, this will give you some information on your single player stats on each of the category types, the difficulty of the questions and the number and percentage of correct answers. Also, on the main menu is the Wall of Knowledge, here you’ll find your Top Ten Score, Ascent Rank and Date. How to Play can also be found on the main menu screen where it will take you over the basics of the game but it’s easy to pick up. As the game has been developed in America, there’s going to be quite a few questions from there. The developers have tried to minimise this for none American's by allowing you to turn On/Off the American Bias Filter in the options. This won’t remove all questions about America, but it will reduce them, for those of us not from the US of A. There is also an Adult Content Filter for in case kids want to play, this will filter subjects like Weapons, Violence, Disasters, Alcohol and Age 17+ Movies, Tv Shows, Music, Games and Books. However, there are No Curse Words, Drug or Sex References - Filtered or Unfiltered in the game. If you must stop midway through a fight, then you can leave the game and it will save the game at that point ready for you to continue later. In the options you’ll find Resolution, Auto Advanced Questions On/Off, Full Screen, Graphics Quality, SFX and Music volume sliders. Adult Content Filter, American Bias Filter On/Off. The game is quite fun to play, whether it’s a quick game or against friends and family in local co-op. There’s plenty of questions in various topics and so far, I haven’t come across the same question twice. If you don’t know much on American history, sports etcetera you can then filter out most of the questions if you want from within the options. Positives + Plenty of questions + Filters + Controller Support + Achievements Negatives - No cards Spank some botty, without using your fists, use the knowledge of your brain instead. 7/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! Ignore the bad art... if you are looking for a good trivia game, stop right here. This is the best pure trivia game on Steam. Great questions, which is the only thing that matters. Pick this one up.
This is a good game. It reminds me a little of the fighting in The Secret of Monkey Island, where you'd battle with words instead of fists. In the case of Trivia Throwdown, instead of throwing insults, you have to strike your opponent by answering trivia questions. There's a lot to like here - groovy music, colorful presentation, plenty of stats and achievements to track your progress, and thousands of questions. The only real downside for me is that they lean heavily towards an American audience, even with the bias filter on. But that's okay because I'm learning new things. I'd imagine Trivia Throwdown is best played with a friend (it's got Steam's Remote Play feature), but it's entertaining in single-player, as well. If you like trivia, give this one a go. It's a Knock Out!

Through trial and tribulation and using a huge pool of useless knowledge you too can beat the trivia masters roaming the streets of this bastion of learning. A few glitches but I enjoyed it.

Easy to learn and get into, and I really enjoyed the variety of questions (lots of good gaming/movies questions, etc). Reminds me of: If you liked Trivial Pursuit, Jeopardy, or any other good trivia game there's a good chance you'll like Trivia Throwdown. A totally worthwhile trivia game with a wide variety of interesting and often educational questions. I felt smarter after playing it for just half and hour, which was honestly quite nice, lol. I can imagine anyone would improve their general knowledge of things with just 10 to 20 minutes of this a day. The fighting game theme and format of the game is a great way to engage people who would not be as interested in regular trivia games. I hate to use the word "fooling", but it's kind of like fooling kids into learning something that is for their own benefit, with the use of entertainment. There's nothing wrong with that - it's actually a fantastic idea. I can remember playing games like Oregan Trail back in the day, and learning lots about that time and adventure in history, WHILE having a blast. A good word for this genre is "edutainment" (as in education merged with entertainment). People of all ages are more willing to learn and better their knowledge through entertainment and engagement of this type - I think its great, and totally win-win for everyone involved. If education and learning was more like this, more often, more people would be doing much better at every level of education, and would lead happier lives. Games CAN change the world for the better ;) Beyond all that, the questions were entertaining, and the ability to slightly affect what kind of question I would have to answer was great. You can choose from 3 categories on your turn, and even "re-roll" the options a few times each session. That way you can sometimes avoid chemistry and baseball, and choose indie movies and retro gaming questions instead, like I did ;). The visuals are in no-way ultra modern or super developed, but they work perfectly well for what the game needs, and the interface is big, easily readable, and understandable. It provides just enough visual representation to get all the needed ideas across and adding to the fun of it. But the game REALLY shines when it comes to the actually good questions, and the well-designed setup of play. You can have 2 players play against each other on the same PC, in the same room, but it would be amazing if a game like this could ever get a good online multiplayer following going. I would love to play this against other human beings - the challenge and sense of accomplishment from winning would be at least x2 against real people. I know it's unlikely for an indie game, but if it was possible to attempt, I would absolutely be playing it multiplayer in this way! 2 bugs/suggestions: 1. I went back to read the tutorial again after one play session, and it "froze" on the first screen. It says "press enter to continue" but nothing would make it continue. I had to press ESC, go back to menu, and then restart the game to get it working right again. 2. When you press ESC during the tutorial to bring up menu, the menu is the same colour as the tutorial text, so it is very hard to read and obviously doesn't look great. Would be an easy fix to have the menu overlap the screen with its own black background or something to that effect. Otherwise everything looked and worked great for me!
I've played a frankly unfairly small amount to pass a real judgement, so take this with a pinch of salt, but for me, apart from the top option, all of the menu options were present but invisible. That's a minor issue, but what I can't forgive, is in 'ascension mode' I very quickly arrived at a point where the opponent character won't pick a category and we both stand there, bobbing up and down, until I quit to main menu and re-enter the game, then they pick - only to immediately get stuck on picking a category after the next question. It's not for me.
