Reviews
The definitive edition that “enhances” TriggerHeart’s story — Faintia joins with high-resolution narrative
Originating in arcades in 2006, TriggerHeart EXELICA is a vertical-scrolling STG known for its unique system of capturing enemies with the “Anchor Shot” and throwing them, as well as its variable difficulty system V.B.A.S. This PC edition ENHANCED follows the line of the PS2 version ENHANCED (2009) while being reconstructed for the modern era as a “story-focused definitive edition.” The most notable feature is the addition of Faintia as a playable ship. With her own laser-based attack design and a separated leaderboard, she opens up new possibilities for score research. Compared with the PS2 version, her implementation is slightly re-balanced. The Enhanced Story Mode has been completely refreshed, with about 70 event stills remastered into high resolution and now fully voiced in Japanese. The animated opening produced by P.A.WORKS and the theme song “Gravity Error” sung by Ayane are also included, making this version one that strongly emphasizes narrative. In terms of gameplay, the tactics of the Anchor Shot and the interplay with V.B.A.S. remain intact, but the scoring multiplier specification differs from the 2024 “standard” PC edition. In Enhanced, the multiplier is fixed, shifting the strategy from the previous style of “throw to raise multipliers” toward “precision-oriented route building.” The Dreamcast-exclusive “Arrange Mode” is not included, but Arcade Mode supports vertical (TATE) play, and Training Mode is also present. Technically, this is more than a simple port. By analyzing and reconstructing from the PS2 ROM—where little source information remains—arcade-like effects and cut-ins have been faithfully reproduced. Without losing the original anime-style visuals, it has been polished for modern hardware, making it a remaster of high archival value. As a basis for comparison with the standard edition: those who want to pursue Arrange practice or traditional score exploitation should choose the standard version, while those who want to enjoy Faintia’s participation and the high-resolution story should choose the ENHANCED version. Since the two complement each other, it is reasonable for players to decide based on their own way of enjoying the series—whether one or both.
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
The shmup contains a rather fun and unique (relatively speaking) gimmick - you can "catch" enemies, and then either swing them around, use them as a shield, or have them explode into other enemies. The game's stages has a lot of different ways to utilize this gimmick, from frantic bullet hell to outright "puzzle" sections. This version will likely have the not-unwarranted stigma of being too similar to the other release of Triggerheart, by the same publisher no less. They erred (big time imo) by running a kickstarter for the other port (based off the Dreamcast original), and before that one had finished (but had reached its funding goal), announce a second crowdfunding campaign for this game, which is based off of the PS2 "Enhanced" port. A more savvy move (that would require more effort) would be to combine both into the ultimate package. This stunt naturally sours one on the greedy nature of small shmup publishers, but don't let that distract you from a good game. So what are the differences? The main differences for Enhanced are: -this includes an extra playable character, Faintear (your rival in the main game) -this includes a Story Mode with VN-style CG drawn scenes (versus the story mode in the other port which is dialog boxes in-game) that is fully-voiced -this lacks the "arrange mode" which is an ultra-hard version of the game in the other port -this tweaks the scoring to put more emphasis on swinging/throwing enemies into other enemies (the og game had a chip multiplier that makes scores balloon, allowing several hundred million points in stage 1 alone) EDIT: NeoStrayCat has written up a very helpful guide denoting all the differences across the many versions of Exelica. Read it here! https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1585607#p1585607 It's up to you to decide which of these features you want the most. The story mode is goofy, long-winded anime cheese, but that has its place in the world I like to think. The graphics were derided when the game first came out, but I think while definitely "indie" they look well enough and set the stage. There is nothing here as hideous as Exzeal or Trizeal. The music is excellent all around, and it even has an anime intro, so you know they wanted you to care about these anime girls in robot swimsuits. The overall difficulty is not too high and using the training mode to iron out the kinks, one might reasonably expect a 1cc. The bosses are tough, but the game's "adaptive" difficulty will actually show you more or less of boss fights depending on how many items you collect. If you have more than 3000 score medals collected, you will see more phases of a boss fight. Less, and the fights will end early - and in some stages, your rival Faintear will not appear unless you beat the boss with 3000 or more medals. You need these encounters (and not continue) to qualify for the good ending! A nice incentive to learn the game. A minor complaint is the game's relative low-resolution settings. 1080p and 1600x900 seem to be as high as it can go. I don't know if this is just to placate the underpowered switch, or if it's just the old ps2/xbox 360 code, but not having everything in higher resolution is especially lame. While it doesn't bother me to the point of complaining (outside of this paragraph), they should have tried a little harder. Overall, this game is a fun and unique shmup with some striking character design, neat gimmick-centered gameplay, and an overall package that you will enjoy if you are a fan of shooting games.
Will not go beyond 1080p. Or at least it will not go to 1440p on my desktop. 720p, 900p and 1080p were my only options. Full screen takes that resolution and linear scales it to the monitor resolution making the game blurry. I do not have a 4K display so I could not test that. Seems like if your refresh rate is not a multiple of 60hz it will do half vsync. On the Steam Deck OLED with it's 90hz display it was capped to 45fps until I dropped the refresh rate to 60hz. It was fine after that. However on the Steam Deck that are massive performance issues. When there are bullets and score pickups on screen the game will slow to 45/30 fps. When I use a bomb on the 1st stage boss the game slow to 20/15 fps. There was no slow down on desktop PC with a 7700x CPU and 9070XT GPU. I can only think there is some proton tweak needed to get the game to use the Steam Decks hardware properly. The deck should be able to hand this game. I have no issues with other 3d shumps. f Refunding for now. This barely feels like an enhanced version. To quote the top review from the previous port "the port is pretty bare-bone, with very few options, and arguably too expensive. But at least it works."f TLDR this is a 35 dollar DLC character repackaged as an updated game.
very swag and kool
i love throwing enemies into other enemies, and it's great that this version lets me do that as much as i like without lowering the multiplier. if i could have chosen between this and the previous version also on steam, i would have chosen this one. very fun game edit: oh, also, the linux support was another reason why i wanted to get this game, but it runs very slowly on my ancient thinkpad x220 with linux. runs fine on the less-ancient t480 with windows at least
I played this game a lot on the Xbox 360, and as far as I can tell, it is all here and accounted for. It's lovely to play again, and the anchor mechanic is super addictive and fun, and it sets it apart from the pack! I think the art is great, too. So overall this was a very positive experience. However, I have to point to a pretty big issue I was having. The sound was horrid. It was really crunchy and poorly balanced, shaking me out of my seat when I defeated an enemy. It wasn't pleasant at all. I tried playing with the Enhanced soundtrack as well as Arcade, and it didn't seem to make much difference when it came to the jarring sound effects. My ears might be playing tricks on me, but I swear the Enhanced soundtrack sounded really bad. The Arcade one was great. But the Enhanced one sounded too crunchy for me, like they accidentally supplanted a high bitrate soundtrack with a lower one meant for small files sent by email. I'm not an expert, so maybe the game's sound effects were this jarring in the Xbox Live Arcade version I've had by my side for all these years. I don't recall it being that way, though. Other than that sound issue, again, a wonderful time. One of my favorite shmups of all time. I can't wait to play my number one favorite, Castle of Shikigami III, very soon after posting this review! These games aren't lighting the Steam charts on fire, but I'm grateful that this publisher has afforded us the opportunity to relive them, the teeny-tiny niche of a community that's already in a niche genre, that we are.
