I gave this game a fair shake to see what it was like and thought it was a good idea of a game where you're typing and creating a story based on the items you find. Unforunatley, like another user said the bell seems to be connected to the typewriter and you litearlly can't type anymore until you go check the trawl. I would go check and wouldn't find any items, so this part of the game is severly bugged. Another issue I found is that when attempting to type is at some point the typewriter bugs out and will only enter nothing but x's no matter what I do. I tried to backspace, but again, more Xs, and when I continued to try and type a story from the items I found the game just bugged out on me. This would be a good little game where you sit and just enjoy the atmosphere, but unfortunately due to the bugs (which are small in comparison and I'm sure could be fixed) I can't recommend playing the game at this time. It's not worth the money and certainly doesn't seem to be supported anymore.
I knew what the game was supposed to be like. My expectations were not high, yet the game still managed to fail all of them. "It is difficult to say definitively how long each playthrough is, as this depends entirely on how much you engage with the game and decide to write in your in-game journal." This statement, pasted from the game description, is a lie. You can collect items, but only three. You can write in your journal, but only for one page. You can chase a radio signal, but only for a minute. These contradictions and pointless limitations are representative of the game as a whole. Why? Why limit the game like this? If the game is supposed to be about writing, why is there only one sheet of paper? Why does the game end when you throw your bottle out to sea? Why can you only collect three items from the ocean? Why does the game not save your progress from session to session? With just a couple of tweaks, this would've felt like a complete game instead of an alpha build/tech demo/proof of concept. Why not add the ability to collect other player's messages that they throw in the ocean? A collection album where you can choose to save other player's notes you find? Look at Elegy for a Dead World. That game barely has any content and relies on user generated text as well, but look at the difference in depth. This should be a free game. The developer has released an incomplete demo and attempts to excuse its incompleteness by saying its part of the game's design. If you want to spend money on an indie game, buy something that has had more time and effort put into it. Don't support demos being sold as complete games, misleading game descriptions, and devs that hand-wave negative reviews away by saying the game isn't meant for everyone. UPDATE May 2022: I've changed my review to Recommended because even though I was frustrated at the time of the original review, the experience stuck in my mind vividly. I stand by my criticism and complaints, but the fact that it was memorable and immersive, and the fact that I wouldn't mind opening it again once in a while, means it isn't all bad. Price is still way too high for what it is though...good thing I got it for free.
Well designed and creepy game designed to play in short spurts You're alone piloting a trawl during a storm in the pitch black of night It takes about ten minutes of play to figure out how to operate the trawl and what signifies your trawl is over top of something worth hauling up I won't offer instructions because the first ten minutes is part of the intrigue but will point out that you need to click on the net so that the bottom drops open before you lower it. Play as long as you like hauling up various objects and then, when you're ready to shut the game down, go into your bunk and record your findings to place in a bottle and toss into the ocean for perhaps other players to find (I assume).
Trawl is a trawling simulator that evokes your creativity. It's a game that acts as a filler in between life. Whenever you feel stuck in terms of creativity or feel mundane with life, play trawl and see what u can pick up from the sea. Then create a story for yourself and see what comes up!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game
I was lucky to get the game for free, but that doesn't devalue the quality of the experience in the slightest. As an experimental game Trawl really pulls off what it attempts too - interactions are small, but so satisfying, imitation of an action feels very good and rewarding. And there is definitely a certain atmosphere that it creates - there is something about the absence of the backstory of the character and the items you find that makes you wonder. Definitely will be looking forward to next games of the developer.
A haunting game that is interpreted by each player for what it gives them. Simple but it tells a story that is formed in our minds and that story becomes ours.
