a cursed, spiteful, hateful game. an existential nightmare dragged screaming into the waking world, grotesquely reshaped through the eldritch instrument we call unity into something vaguely resembling a video game. an endless labyrinth of uncanny liminal spaces inhabited by lovingly rendered 2D simulacrums of all of your sleep paralysis demons and other assorted fourth dimensional entities beyond comprehension that murmur terrifying garbled whispers over radio static and the echoes of half-forgotten music from long dead worlds as they usain bolt your helpless bitch-ass through infinite hallways.
If you're looking for a good scare and a game that makes you go from "huh that's a cool little character" to "PANIC PANIC PANIC" then this is the game for you! very spooky game!
Core gameplay loop is super fun. This game feels like an exploration-based rogue-like horror, and it scratches an itch I didn't know I had. Fairly replayable already, very much looking forward to additional content. Also, surprisingly mechanical... has a very interesting learning curve for the type of game it is. At the current price point ($5 USD) you really can't go wrong picking this one up.
I played this game throughout it's build-history and I can't stop getting amazed! There's so much content this game has to offer, and so many surprises. Additionally, It's concept is unique and new. With each progression, you get a completely different level design - Learning the map and knowing how to use resources is essential for the highest score. This game also contains good atmosphere just as other reviews mentioned, with a retro/pixely style gameplay. If you haven't checked this game out and you like horror games, you're missing out!
A very weird, kind of confusing but ultimately pretty simple game. - Find a key - Find an exit door - Don't get your ass eaten by ghosts But the random nature of the map, and the ways the ghosts appear and interact (and screw) with you make every floor a very different experience. It's very unsettling, and while I don't find it particularly scary the ghosts are pretty stress inducing. Also one time I found a buddy who followed me around, but I died before I could find out what he did. Sad times.
this game is so fcking good
Unique art style and some interesting gameplay mechanics, but painfully repetitive with enemies that violently disorient your screen and ghosts that chase you through walls in a procedurally generated maze-styled map, very epic. Can't say it was enjoyable for me.
It's like Pac-Man if the ghosts were from the Grudge. Art style is phenomenal.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS GAME IS SO UNDER THE RADAR. This game is extremely freaky if you allow yourself to be immersed. If you one of those people like "thats not scary!" Its not going to scare you. Its about sitting in the dark late at night with headphones on. I swear this game is going to give me a heart attack. The lo-fidelity graphics really hammer the atmosphere down and there are many types of ghosts with their own motivations from harmless pranksters and poltergeists to downright evil spirits who just want to kill you. The game is cheap so pick it up. Its a terror fest. The RNG of the g ame can make a level go by in 20 seconds or last 15 minutes. The longer you linger the more dangerous the world becomes. Wear a diaper and take your heart pills. Get ready for a haunted house simulator like youve never seen...
I am not really a fan of maze games and will probably never finish ToruTaru but I still have to write a review to recommend this unique, weird little gem. The main gameplay is finding keys to the next floor but you also can help other people trapped in this hell mansion as well as dispel ghosts with talismans (which also have other functions). I didn't get too far in my first try but the talisman system apparently allows you to jump between rooms. You also have a map that you can mark individually, so there's a learning curve that will definitely influence how well you're doing. But is it scary? YES! The environment changes in between floors but is spooky all around. The sound design is absolutely amazing because it doesn't use the usual tropes of children's laughing or footsteps, it has these weird, distorted sounds and moans that really play with your mind. The ghosties are equally gorgeously twisted and unnerving. All in all, ToruTaru is super weird but excels in this weirdness because it is also creepy and fun to play. I think especially people who love a challenge, will get a lot of enjoyment out of this. See my despicable display while hardly making it to the bottom floors here: https://youtu.be/m8weSMIguic
