This was a fun little game. It definitely scratches that metrodvania itch that occasionally comes along. The game has multiple endings, so you can go back through and replay a couple of times. I liked some of the weapon options. Others I found to be very underwhelming. The main gimmick of this is your ability to freeze time. I often forgot about that during normal traveling, and ended up solving some of the map puzzles at the end of the game when I was going through and completing all of the map. The game isn't really difficult, even on normal mode. You get healing items in your inventory that you can cap out (as long as you keep farming money to buy more). The healing items give you a lot of lenience with boss battles. Some people like harder games. You can always play through this one with self imposed limitations if you want. You can also find the code to unlock nightmare mode by searching online. But, I enjoy the option to just play through without having to worry about timing boss moves just right over and over again.

A classic metroidvania experience that respects your time, is not bloated and leaves room for exploration at your own pace. I wish more titles had these considerations. It has a sequel planned for when you feel a hankering for more
A love letter to classic Metroidvanias that is primarily downvoted not for mechanical shortcomings but due to ideological problems that people have with the characters and lore. Despite the fact that it isn't a marathon game with hours on end of gameplay mostly spent traversing a massive map and fighting scores of the same enemies, it's fun and charming with enough variance in setting and mechanics to keep it from being "not just another Igavania clone." Despite this, it's clearly inspired by Symphony of the Night right down to the soundtrack. It tries to inject some novelty in a genre that primarily uses the same several mechanics to gate content. As a single player experience, my gripes with the game are that they don't make enough use of the uniqueness of time travel as a gating mechanic and that the quest system feels somewhat slapped on as the major outcomes of their completion are more lore and achievements. (Spoken as someone whoa appreciates the dialogue and characters.) The asymmetric co-op is interesting and very powerful against bosses and stationary enemies, but due to being a split screen game can have accuracy issues and make the player 2 feel useless at times. My Player 2 would let the familiar autopilot unless there was an enemy that she could really shine against. If you're going to be the support, I'd recommend bringing something else to hold your attention, especially if your player 1 is trying to 100% the game. That said, Timespinner's biggest Achille's heel seems to be infusing its world with a level of maturity that most capital G Gamers unfortunately can't wrap their heads around. If your meterstick for a good Metroidvania still requires a Machiavellian villain and a generic hero trope in the year of our lord 2026, it's no wonder that you struggle to appreciate a game where the "villains" aren't a caricature of evil. The world is complicated, and Timespinner does a good job of communicating this in a lighthearted way while remaining fun. Overall, I'd recommend it to fans of the genre who are tired of playing the same old game with mildly different characters and lore.
Timespinner is a great Metroidvania-style sidescroller with some aspects that remind me of Chrono Trigger. The orb mechanics and spells allow for a variety of fighting styles, though it does take most of the game to get access to all of them. The pixel art is spectacular, and a lot of the music is great. If it had been made during the SNES era I expect it would've been considered one of the best games made for the console. I did feel the LGBT+ subplots seemed like they were shoehorned in. I have nothing against that type of content, but of the five NPCs who were considered important enough to be questgivers: two admit they're gay, one mentions he's bisexual, and one reveals she's a trans lesbian. It felt forced, especially considering the main plot of the game was about war and hopelessness. Still, I enjoyed the game enough to finish it in a weekend and I'll probably play it again sometime. Considering how many games I've left unfinished or that are sitting in my Steam library unplayed, that's saying something.
I'd say this is my introduction to Metroidvanias, and it makes me want to crave more! Other than
the annoying jump to the bridge in the past with the butterflies
, this is smooth sailing. Bosses are good and sometimes a little challenging, but I do wish some had more than just 1 phase. But otherwise I had a lot of fun!
