Gameplay

I'd seen the reviews. I knew the game wasn't "good." But I had a coupon sitting in my inventory queue and a $0.34 game (plus $0.02 tax) is almost too cheap/good to pass up. Now, don't misunderstand: Even with a significant percentage off, Through Blocks is a dud. After clearing Level 5 (the final level in the game), I'd clocked in over an hour, and most of THAT was spent trying to figure out what does what. There's a small controls legend in the top-left corner of the screen—the "E" is your "use" key, the "V" key rewinds time to manipulate in-game play (very necessary, as you spend a LOT of time watching your little block characters die). The "Esc" key brings up a pause window to resume, restart, or exit the game. Curiously, the game neglects to include the proper input key for "jump"—one of the most necessary block functions—which is where most of my hour+ playtime was spent. (It was the "W" key for me, if anyone cares to know.) Once that mystery was solved, I was probably in the 25-35 minute range actually beating the game. There is some level of thought and strategy necessary to progress...buuuuuuut really and truly the most trying aspect is just nailing the controls. I had to back out to the main menu several times, due to level elements not generating properly (or at all). Sometimes the game would even rewind time to a previously cleared level, creating a negative timestamp and "freezing" play. (Sometimes I think it glitched just to be glitching.) And while I appreciate the simplicity of the design, the graphics/textures look and feel like something slapped together in MS Paint. The music I like. There are three tracks to cycle through at will; all are quite nice and soothing and very appropriate for the style of play. I would even go so far as to say the music is the highlight of the experience, but again, that's a pretty low bar to reach for a game you can exhaust in 35 mins. Although it's difficult in good conscience to recommend such a bare-boned, buggy, incomplete mess of a title, it's a hard product to fault for $0.99 (or in my case, $0.36). There are no trading cards, no achieves, and the more tenacious of players will see it through to completion with little fuss. For just a few cents, it's a great addition to the library if you're looking to increase Steam XP, as it's easy to beat quickly and ignore. But make no mistake—this is a $0.36 game in every sense of the word. And you absolutely get what you pay for. THE WRAP: -Minimal content. As "beta" as beta gets. -The lack of hand-holding is nice, but so is knowing what buttons do what. Prepare for guesswork. -Bugs galore. A glitchy mess. -Visually unimpressive. Bland textures with a depressing color scheme. -Pleasant, non-irritating music selection. -SUPER inexpensive. For a handful of cents, it's hard to say no.
6 minutes of brain energy wasted :(
