Thistlemine is a game I've had an entirely unique experience with. WARNING! This is a HARD puzzle game. The core gameplay requires a lot of patience and experimentation, AND I MEAN A LOT, which I feel is important to know going in. This is one of those puzzle games that requires a lot of thinking and a lot of work, and in the process, ends up taking over your whole life for a while and changing you as a person. Although Thistlemine plays like your standard battle RPG, it is a puzzle game first and a puzzle game second. Rather than a simple "shoot 'em til they die" strategy, every battle in the game asks you to solve the fight by figuring out how to string your various abilities together in the right order. Most time in this game will be spent in battle, experimenting with various attack combos through trial and error. THISTLEMINE ISN'T LIKE OTHER PUZZLE GAMES. This isn't like your typical puzzle game, where the puzzles only have one starting condition and one solution. Multiple strategies can work on certain battles, there are numerous paths towards success, plenty of resources to play with, and conditions that can change depending on how you progress. As such, unlike most puzzle games, the replayability for this game is very high, which is by design!! Never before has a puzzle game so thoroughly taken over my mind before, and it's because of the countless different possible ways to progress. And built on top of the distinctive core gameplay system is some of the most enjoyable presentation you could ask for. The witty writing, intriguing worldbuilding, charming artwork, addicting music, and satisfying sound design all serve to make it into a full experience. I have never had a more enriching and satisfying time with a puzzle game than I have with Thistlemine. Although the barrier to entry is high, I can't imagine giving it anything but the highest recommendations.

Turn-based combat with limited turns. Stunning hand-drawn adorable anime artwork.
I don't understand a single thing that has happened this entire game. I thought I understood a puzzle and then I walked into the next room and it completely changed how the puzzle works. I do not understand a single part of this game. I thought this was a puzzle about flowers but now there are bushes and I don't know what they mean. I feel like I'm being messed with. I can hear the developer laughing at me when I fail to solve another puzzle and am sent back 5 rooms. This may be one of the most compelling experiences I've ever had with a game.
Thistlemine in all seriousness, is a HARD game featuring both exploration puzzles and combat, each being different from the first encounters. There were multiple occasions where I would take actual DAYS to ponder and solve the puzzles/boss fights as the game gives little to no information on how to approach the challenge. Item management and upgrading relics are super important, also have MULTIPLE savepoints. You would either be stuck trying to solve a puzzle or dying over and over again to a boss till you eventually solve it. However, what did keep me playing was being too stubborn to quit. Overall, I did enjoy Thistlemine's OST and art style being a fan of Fruitbat Factory.
Disclaimer: I have only gotten the "Stasis Ending" and have attempted to do another playthrough to see what else sub-routes I could unlock for other endings. I had a difficult time clearing the game the first time and seeing the additional requirements needed for the subroutes were even more challenging, dare say almost impossible. Could just be a skill issue? Maybe. But I don't think I will be able to defeat Marguerite within 3 turns without Sagi's help
it's peak...
I saw that this was around and was gonna be published by Fruitbat Factory, so thought I'd give it a go! Sadly, the game feels unfinished and unpolished in its current state and I cannot recommend it, but I hope they do update it in the future cause it can be made better. Let's talk about the higher points; 1. The art's cute! Very cute. I quite like the style it has and it makes me think it's like a pop-up book. 2. The music's nice. A bit repetitive, but I was jamming out a bit during a few fights. 3. The very small tidbits of lore I got made me interested to play a bit more than I originally planned, And the not-so-good aspects of the game; 1. The lack of a tutorial/intro really does put a damper on the game's opening. I didn't know what to do except from what I read from the game's page. It definitely needs something, especially for players newer to the genre, even if it's just a training fight from another character. 2. The lack of lore and flavour really does make it feel a bit more hollow - There's all sorts of items to inspect and some storytelling through the enemies, but there should be some expanded-upon lore in the intro if it's added. You're just dumped into an exclusion zone for some kind of anomalous area. 3. The beginning area is a wrap-around for encounters. While the 2nd area is interesting and how you have to think to visualize or keep track of it like an older game, I would really appreciate having the first area be a proper roam or dungeon crawl, and not just a ring-around of puzzle fights. So in it's current state...I'd advise against getting it. Once a few updates pass, I'll check it out again.
I have to say. This is an interesting game. Some aspects remind me of a specific creepy pasta that I won't name. It's also interesting that there is resource manage in a game of this nature. That aside, it has a refreshing take to puzzles. Not only are the battles themselves puzzles, progression will often leading you to a lot of puzzle solving. Nothing is really spelt out, per say. But a keen eye should be able to be able to navigate through the game well enough. The only thing that somewhat irked me, which is the only reason I have not finished the game, is that the solution to some battles can be a bit too cryptic as if feels like you are expected to be certain fights in a certain way. I would have probably be more annoyed if it weren't for the fact, the game is charming and has some pretty good, if not a little eerie presentation. I can honestly recommend this to anyone who likes a good challenge and is all for the vibe this game offers.
I love slamming my head against a wall until things work out
Target Audience: Those who like a intelligent challenge Summary: Thistlemine is a game that is going to frustrate you, but it's sorta the point in the end. You need to figure out how to get through a battle or a puzzle with only your wits and some effort, and the game will pay it off thanks to some well designed puzzle encounters, as well as an interesting world of corruption. Granted, this isn't the type of game that's going to hold your hand while you power through it: those who are needing hints or are likely to try to look up a guide aren't going to get the most out of the game: it's better to struggler through it. Granted, you'll get lost, and quite frankly the game at times could do a better job of nudging you in a direction despite having some open endedness to it. If you're looking for creative solutions to RPG fights, this isn't that type of game, but it's still fun never the less. Knowing when to heal, when to save for a crit, or when to even just unleash every thing you have: that's fun itself. Exploring around and getting aha moments is fun too: but it's not going to knock you off your feet in the process. The thing that the game has going for it more then most is that the replayability with puzzles and specifically saving items/going down different paths, along with the time element, does give the game a unique angle that let's you play around with “well, what if I tried this series of things instead?” It'll make me come back to the game, and is why you'd probably want to pick it up right now. But it's solid none the less from the puzzle element: and if you're looking to stretch your brain logic: Thistlemine is a solid choice. Review Video: : https://youtu.be/EUgKlU0SRYY Lists: Positives:

Smart RPG puzzles that push your strategy without feeling too oppressive....most of the time.
Replayability of paths for a puzzle game is great, and adds a good amount of intrigue.
An interesting world with Miasma/Corruption that I want to see more of.
Character designs are interesting and tell a fun story, but are themed well. Like corruption in particular
Good battle music that keeps the blood flowing.
Negatives:

The game could do a better job of subtly pushing the player to a specific new puzzle, as opposed to randomly running around.
High frustration factor will turn off some to the game.
Certain environment puzzles follow a similar formula. Still fun, but I could see some being turned off by them.
