Why on Earth are people tagging this as "choices matter" and "rpg"? This is a hardcore tactical stealth sandbox game with an on-rails story. It's fine, for what it is, but it's not an rpg in any of the ways that people usually think of when considering the genre.
Summary: Yes, I would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a quality story combined with some simple puzzles, team management, stealth, and strategy/tactics. The key to enjoying this game is not getting caught up with the desire to be perfect, instead, embrace failures and learning from them. As with any stealth game you need to minimise being caught performing illegal actions, and exercise patience to understand the routine of NPC's (much like the Hitman series). Location & Story: The story takes place in the Monastery over 3 campaigns: - Prologue - this acts as a kind of tutorial to the game mechanics - The Corrupt Hand of the Church - The Gate of Saint Jerome Both main campaigns continue on the story from the prologue but take you through a completely different monastery map/world compared to the other, with different NPC's to interact with, and their own set of objectives to complete. They also start you out with different members of your overall team, needing to progress through the story to unlock other team members. The story was well done, to some extent the story needs to be found through various notes and other objects, dialogue with NPC's and I can see some people might miss portions of the story. For me this was a plus as I feel it rewards players that are willing to fully explore the world. The world changes with the time of day, NPC’s all follow a routine, but as each quarter of the day passes their routine will change, NPC’s can appear or leave, and this all helps the game world feel more alive. There are also two phases to the game, during the day you explore the monastery and try to complete your objectives. At night you are locked in your cell, and this when you deal with any problems such as health, sanity loss, craft new items, gain knowledge and use it to unlock new skills. You only get a limited number of points to perform these tasks, so you need to decide what to spend those points on doing/fixing. Characters: Your team will eventually consist of Father Alfredo, Eduardo, Leonora, Amelia, and Agnes. Each of these characters has unique skills but also come with phobia's that you need to keep in mind as you explore the monastery. Each team member also has additional skills that can be unlocked, and these help with team management in your cell at night, and as you explore the monastery during the day. Lose too much sanity and you’ll be forced to deal with new phobia’s, but there are ways to remove these additional phobia’s. Autosave Only: Although the game doesn't include manual saving, I never found it to be an issue. Autosaves happen often enough that I never found myself replaying any section of the game. If you feel the need to reach for the quick save/load button, you've missed the point and a major mechanic of the game, failing is ok, unless you repeatedly make the same mistakes over and over, there’s nothing you can’t recover from. Difficulty: There are three difficulty levels: - Story Mode being the easiest. - The Stone of Madness is a balance between Story Mode and Despair Mode. - Despair Mode is the hardest, NPC’s are faster to detect you performing illegal actions, and higher sanity loss. This is the level I chose and managed to finish with sanity near 100%, 100% health, and with plenty of resources left in the inventory. Graphics: I felt the art style fits well with the monastery and looked beautiful. I'm not someone that focuses heavily on graphics, for me the game looks good and fits with the period and theme. There were a few minor issues with characters clipping through walls and objects, but it didn't really bother me or cause any issues with gameplay. Sound: Again, not a huge focus for me, the music and sound effects did their job of providing ambience and helping the world sound alive. Controls: I played using keyboard & mouse, and didn’t experience any issues. I never used a controller so I can't really comment on how good or bad the experience is with those, and I never experienced any issues with controls. Also, once you start a game there are options to re-assign controls if you don’t like the default. Puzzles: There are some puzzles to be solved in this game, but the answers are very easy to find. Clues are easily found through dialogue with NPC's, notes and other objects scattered around the world. I never felt they were overly complex, if anything I felt sometimes they were too easy to solve, but this is a very minor issue. Combat: There is really nothing I would call combat. KO'ing or killing an NPC consists of two actions. Choose the skill/item you want to KO or kill with, then click on the target and your character automatically does the rest. Keep in mind like any other RTT game you don't want to be too far away from your intended target, or you risk getting caught. Note you can’t clear a map of NPC’s like other RTT games, kill someone and they’ll be replaced with an identical NPC in 3 game days. Bugs: - I found an exploit that could be used to obtain additional violins. This would have made the game easier if I didn’t reload. - Two items in the inventory would end up in one slot, but it didn't impact my ability to use those objects. Neither are game breaking, and easily avoided by not overloading your inventory.
I haven't finished the game yet, but so far it's fun. I didn't find any game-breaking bugs, but there are some bugs. For example, sometimes it's hard to select the element that you want to interact with, and I found at least one instance where I couldn't exchange inventory between characters.
one of the stealth games of all time
