Reviews
I was a big fan of Tainted Pact Games' previous release, Flesh Made Fear, but even as a lifelong horror fan, I can't shake the feeling that The Skin Stapler is simply "not for me". By that I don't mean I simply disliked the game due to a divergence of personal taste in some of its shakier writing & voice acting (which is true of some early segments that feel ultimately disposable), or that certain crude jokes involving hot dogs, cream-filled doughnuts, and other phallic objects get run into the ground eye-rollingly quickly (although they do). I just felt alienated from the game world completely, like I was watching a rock show from a balcony seat instead of on the floor, or actually performing on stage. There was just too much ironic distance created by the intentionally tropey, silly writing for me to find it compelling. There are certain parts of The Skin Stapler that get away from the overly-intentional lowbrow B-horror schlock & work well enough on their own, like Layna Lazar's section of the game -- from her savvy, tuned-in performance, to the deliberate artistic choices around
her fate & the grisly tableau the player is presented with at its end
-- which makes it stand alone far above every other content creator's scenario, much less any other scene in the game. Despite my reservations with the rest of the game, Michael Cosio's ability to create & execute a sequence like hers with such vision & attention to grisly detail has made me a guaranteed repeat customer for whatever Tainted Pact Games cooks up next. I can't unequivocally thumbs-down the title, because I see the unharnessed potential this indie developer has at his disposal for whatever comes next. But you'll get a lot more out of it than I did if you are: a) Younger, b) A dedicated fan of one or more of the live streaming talents directly involved in its creation, or c) Possessing of a higher tolerance than I have for lowbrow jokes & dumb bodily function running gags, in service of a loose genre parody.

2-3 hours of gameplay is alot longer than most 10/15 (full price of the game) bucks but as much as i like the music, villain, detective work and the multiple different character POVs and the game graphics. The writing itself was TOO corny at times, maybe it was some of the voice actors performances being worse than others but at some points it got old like it was trying too hard to lean on the humor side. This game is mainly just sexual humor more than anything but personally it got old after the 2 hour mark. This review is obviously subjective and i'd say if you want to play this game buy it on sale and not full price.
"It puts the staple in its skin or else it gets the innuendo again"
It's no secret that I dig PSX style horror. The genre is a staple in my gaming diet. I had hoped The Skin Stapler would be a solid meal, but it's more of a brown sugar pop-tart from the vending machine, not bad, but not my favorite. On the surface this reminded me of a Puppet Combo game, but I didn't hold onto that throughout my playthrough. The Skin Stapler is uniquely itself for better or worse and that should be considered before jumping in. If you're expecting an experience akin to the former, this might not be for you. The game starts off strong, the first few chapters had me feeling like I was in for a treat. The soundtrack is good, the antagonist passes the vibe check for an interesting killer, ♥♥♥♥ Slater is quite cliche, yet endearing, and the puzzles aren't terrible (save for the last aftermath chapter, it was a little obtuse finding the last clue). I genuinely wanted to learn more about our antagonist and see how the story unfolded. Unfortunately the game is marred by a few key flaws. I'm not above any humor. I can get a laugh out of most things, but the over reliance on sexual innuendos overstayed their welcome. The glizzy guzzlers were funny the first couple of times, but by the time I got to the donut handjobs I was over it. As many reviews have mentioned the game starts to lean heavily into "Did you see that, chat?" streamer slop territory. Following the stale humor, the gameplay loop becomes a bit too formulaic, complete menial job tasks, die, investigate the killing, rinse, and repeat. With the short runtime it's not awful, but if you were expecting more from the game you'll be disappointed. With the launch discount it is a bit easier to stomach the blow, but at full price it's a limp recommend. Tainted Pact put some love into this and I appreciate the artistry and nods to some of their other titles. For most I would say wait for a sale around $8. Even with the flaws there's enough skin staplin' fun to make it worth a playthrough.
Seemed interesting at the start. Liked the aesthetics and the whole back-and-forth mechanics where you get to play different people going about their life and then playing the detective investigating the crime scenes of the same people you previously played - really gave me that [strike] Happyhills Homicide [/strike] Detroit Become Human vibe, especially with the whole trope of an old, grumpy Detective who hates everything, and he gets this new partner, and he hates him because he works solo, now he's big grumpy! It didn't feel like I had much agency in the game, but linearity doesn't have to be a bad thing. The antagonist was also too goofy for my liking. Just a personal preference, not an issue with the product itself of course, and it's not something I *cant* enjoy either. I could tell from the get-go this would have a silly, potty sense of humour, I knew it wouldn't take itself too seriously which I was fine with at the start, but it didn't seem to have any restraint or decency to end. Look, I know the joke only gets funnier the more you tell it - I'm guilty of that as well as a dude with an awful sense of humour, but holy sh*t... -Hey Detective D*ck - you're looking very stiff. -That's because my partner is very soft lmao! There's only so many puns I can take about people deepthroating themselves and sticking stuff in their b*tt or polishing their balls, because you see - the balls are getting polished hehe, get it? hehe POLISHED like seggz hehe xddddddddd Like, at some point it crosses the territory of cheesy and becomes obnoxious like a prepubescent teenager's first time in sex ed class. Even David Cage can be more tasteful for the love of god... I've genuinely played adult games with more decency. Sorry, but this kind of humour eludes me after a certain threshold. Other reviews mention a bunch of content creators making an appearance as voice actors and actresses, and honestly that's all I needed to know. In my one whole hour of enduring this game I recognised like one person, but I'm sure there's more later on. Doesn't have to be a bad thing, but personally for me it was just another reason to dislike it.
The Skin Stapler is the latest from Tainted Pact, known for games like Massacre at the Mirage and Flesh Made Fear. Probably one of the best indie horror devs working today, releasing quality games at least once a year. I'me loving this jank universe where all the games are beginning to tie together. Full disclosure I may be a little bias because I got to do some voice work in the game. But if you've played the dev's previous games you know exactly what to expect.
I giggle at a ♥♥♥♥ joke in general, but god did it get tiring hearing one every 5 mins + the "quirky" way the NPCs ate food. It just felt very idk immature? Like stuff a teen would find funny. Also some of the voice acting is a bit off. It's unfortunate because I really like the art style / aesthetic.
The effort was there... but the amount of "gooner' jokes I had to endure was out of this world. I have never been angrier in my entire life. I want you to reflect on the abomination you created, and learn from this. A few of my chatters liked it, but I question their morals and well-being. Go eff yourself. On a real note, the game was fine. Just please kill less women and make less sex jokes thanks! 4/10
Uniquely terrible in a way that's hard to explain, like the worst Adam Sandler movie if it were a game. Great gift for a preteen, or someone you hate!!
Was actually looking forward to playing this game, unfortunately I have been horribly let down by it. Majority of the game is dialog that is horribly voice acted and the comedy is repeatedly hitting the same tone over and over again. The gameplay is dull, even for a "walking sim" standard. Your money and your time is best spent elsewhere.
I'm mixed on it. On one hand, it is very polished, has a great visual aesthetic and it's pretty entertaining for the first hour or so. On the other hand, it repeats same jokes over and over again, the gameplay is very simple/repetitive and it feels cynically designed to become viral via Streamers/Tik-Tok more than something that has actual passion put into it. Outside of the kills and gross out moments, it's mainly just performing basic tasks and walking around the grungy environments. ♥♥♥♥ and Robbie are fun characters with a good dynamic but they're sidelined for most of the game in favor of a bunch of randies and you almost feel the game stop to let you clap every time another IRL streamer shows up. The gameplay consists of: 1. Complete 3-5 tasks as the chapter's Twitch Streamer cameo 2. Killer shows up and acts goofy 3. You get murdered in a wacky ironic way 4. Investigate the crime scene as the detective and solve a baby tier puzzle 5. Repeat 5 times If you've watched the trailer, you have seen most of what the game has to offer honestly. And it felt overly long despite only being 3.5 hours. Also, I'm not sure why it doesn't have official gamepad support but I was able to play it fine with steam input. There is nothing in this game that mandates forcing a keyboard/mouse.
