The Rise of Chubtan gives eager players another excuse to let out their aggression on friends in a local deathmatch game. While the Mayan setting stands out, the foretold apocalypse must not have been caused by too much in-game content. Chubtan doesn’t rise so much as he kind of just leans up. The objective in Chubtan is to use your palette swap character to hit the switch in the arena as many times as possible, with each hit changing the switch’s location and activating a trap, to build up your score before time runs out. Players can punch for knock back or send out a projectile with a brief stun, both of which won’t directly kill your opponent but rather help to manipulate them into traps. The focus of the game is less about killing and more about score, and some of the traps are more likely to punish careless players than be used for murder. The traps demand blood and will continue firing and resetting until someone is killed. Players die instantly from traps, and there are a few pickups that spawn on each map that can offer small boosts like speed or invincibility. Traps can stack on each other with each switch hit, which can make it an interesting game of survival as chaos erupts. There are currently 4 maps each with a handful of traps exclusive to each that range from acid covering the floor to a robot firing lasers. The frenzy of matches can be fun and exciting, but Chubtan definitely hits a wall. Chubtan has one game mode, the option to change the time limit, and requires human players. There are no co-op modes or bot options. The fact that all 4 players can play on the same keyboard with moderate comfort does soften the blow, and the devs have stated that they are willing to add an online option if people show interest. Given the rather low amount of content, online play would certainly be a step in the right direction, but Duck Game, Fighties and Brawlhalla already offer solid online play in addition to them being polished and interesting. There is not something that really grabs players here. Chubtan does not have much going on in terms of style. The gameplay does not feel quite snappy or dynamic enough. At the same time, this isn’t as easy to pick up and play as other options: some more unskilled players will find themselves dying constantly from traps and having a hard time trying to maneuver around platforms. Mechanics wise, a dash or counter would help make matches livelier, movement speed could be a pinch faster, and arenas could use more space because at the moment players are mostly tripping through traps rather than besting each other with skill. The lack of variety between matches also adds to this with limited options and modifiers. There is not a strong hook here; it’s a simple idea played mildly. On a technical level, Chubtan is functional and it can be fun. But, with all the other options to choose from, Chubtan is just a game to hold you over in between bouts of Towerfall or Crawl. So far Chubtan is so bland and bare that it is the Communion wafer of local multiplayer options. By no means is it horrible or broken, but unless it gets a substantial update, it’s also not appealing.
Note: Dead multiplayer game This game contains no meaningful single player content. There's no players, no online modes.
This is one of the lamest Super Smash Bros ripoffs I've seen in a long time, no formal online play, busted controls, unpolished and un-fun gameplay with a painfully generic theme... Basically everything Super Smash Bros did to work, this fails at. No fun characters, no polish, poor, drab retro visuals... it's easy to see why this never caught on. So, "The Rise of Chubtan" is a dead multiplayer game. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! The chief cause of failure is the developer thinking that their game will "go viral" without actually creating any reason for it do so. Competition amongst multiplayer centric games is extreme, and there's only a finite player base to appeal to. This game failed to reach any kind of critical mass and died as a result. Let's go into some of the reasons this particular game failed to appeal to gamers, despite the zero up front cost. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. This game is fairly dated at 9 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $8 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. There's no financial cost up-front, but you'd still be spending your time and a little hard drive space on a product that's far from the best. There's thousands of better alternatives on Steam.
Mwhahaha! Fun fast paced fighter err platformer! Good pace changer for breaks at serious lan parties.

Игра "The Rise of Chubtan" оказалась неожиданно захватывающей.
