This review doesn't contain spoiler as it is quite impossible to spoil (i.e. rot) this game more than the developers already did. But "story" elements get discussed, so fair warning to you... Also, sexual assault trigger warning. This is one of those instances where I wish for more hands, just so I could give a game more thumbs down. One could say it is based on the traditional Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, the way one could also say the 2019 movie Cats is based on a collection of poetry by T.S. Eliot. In The Path, you successively control six young girls in a kind of semi-open world. You're told to not stray from the path and go straight to grandma's house but where's the fun in that? Plus, you do that, you lose. So yeah, actually, you'll direct each girl to her own version of "the wolf".
"By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me," Miranda Priestly, The Devil Wears Prada
The Path does not hold back. By that, I mean that a lot of its horridness is apparent from the get go. The girls are moved though tank controls. TANK CONTROLS. In 2009! Granted, I played with a controller and in retrospect, it's probably the worst way to play it, but still. And it's not like the alternative is keyboard+mouse. No, it's keyboard OR mouse. Anyway... All six girls are visibly terminally asthmatic. They walk at a glacial pace. They can run. For a while. Sometimes. But let them run too long and the already dreadful music gets even worse and your screen gets darker. And when you reach the areas where some important story happens, you can't run anyway. To add insult to injury, in portions of those areas, the view becomes fixed, which makes the controls even more nightmarish and SLOWER than they already were. And let's not forget the house, in which you may only press forward about 200 times to progress with no other form of control. If the developers wanted a portion where they put the players on rails, at least give us a damn locomotive.
“Does one deserve to have evil done to her by consequence of putting herself where evil can reach her?” ― Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings
If it were only for that, The Path would be a bad game, but it is a proper abomination. Meeting the wolf results in sequences that, while not graphic, are obviously not nice for the girls. After which they'll wake up lying in the rain, just in front of grandma's house (towards which they'll walk at a new record low speed, incidentally) before walking around a metaphorically altered house. The game is extremely cryptic, but it's obvious that each one gets served some sort of deep trauma. I'm pretty sure that in at least one instance, I led the poor girls to a place where they got R-word-ed by the "wolf". Which is unpleasant enough but becomes intolerable when you realise that they're only in this situation becaus they ignored the instructions to stay on the path. Talk about victim blaming! And let me remind you that ignoring this instruction and meeting the wolf is necessary to advance the story.
“Shout it, shout it. Over and over, over and over. Over and over, over and over" ― Madonna, Over and over
I feel like anything else I can say beyond that is futile, but this is a review, so let's make it a proper one. The best thing I can say about The Path, is that, for a 2009 indie game, its graphics are decent. The animation of the girls, in particular, is convincing. The music, on the other hand, is an atrocity by itself. At its best, it reminded me of a Björk lullaby (think "Amphibian") and at its worst, which is almost all the time, a teeth-gritting 15-second loop with little to no variety. And with the game clocking at about 3 hours, that more than 500 instances of said loop. Speaking of which, $9.99 may sound expensive for such a short game. Trust, me its value-for-money would have been even worse, had it been longer. I will round this up by mentioing the annoying bugs that prevented me from interacting with some elements, the three puzzles which were all awful and the numerous absolutely pointless collectibles, among which 144 flowers that will each trigger a loooooong animation for the poor girl to kneel, pick the flower up and stand up again. Seeing The Path's metacritic score of 79%, I'm reminded that we used to cut indie "art" games a lot of slack in the '00s, didn't we. But it is the worst game I've played in a very, very long time. Its disastrous execution is matched only by its repugnant intent.

Beautiful game, loved this game for years.
PEAK
This is the type of game that requires a very specific mindset to enjoy. If you're not in that mindset, you might get bored within 20 minutes. The whole game is essentially about walking through a forest and discovering things. You have to be patient and focused. Take it slow and don't rush. The game doesn't explain everything outright. It asks you to connect the dots and figure out the story yourself. If you're willing to try, it becomes a very memorable experience. I won’t give any spoilers, but I genuinely enjoyed uncovering its story and coming to my own conclusions.
