The Phantom Thief Strikes Again :o

Introduction
The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not is a yuri, slice-of-life visual novel developed and published by solarProtag. The story takes place in the fictional city of Twinbells, England, which is known for having a mysterious phantom thief rob jewels, only to have them returned later. Although multiple protagonists narrate the story, which consists of five chapters, in the first and last chapters, you take on the role of Desiree, a young woman working at a flower shop. However, she is also known as Forget Me Not, the phantom thief. Events take quite the turn when a renowned ballet company performs at the local theater and at the museum, the Black Swan, the company's prized jewel, is on display. Of course, Desiree isn't going to pass up the chance to steal it, but along the way, she may unexpectedly fall for a certain blonde-haired ballerina. ^^ As for the gameplay, it is a linear story. Even though a few choices are presented, they do not affect the direction of the story whatsoever. They're simply there for flavor text. Also, certain parts of the game allow for point-and-click exploration, so you get more information about items, places, and/or people. Several CGs and a full-on soundtrack are present although no voice acting. In addition, there are a few Steam achievements, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game".
Review
When I first started the game and read the story, I immediately got excited. The introduction of Forget Me Not and her appearance reminds me of this popular detective anime that I'd love to watch, especially since some of the episodes would have a teenage phantom thief. (Of course, there are plenty of differences between that anime and this visual novel. ^^) I felt drawn in by the excitement as Desiree (along with Crow's help) would try and succeed in stealing the latest jewel on display at the museum, much to the police's chagrin, especially a certain Detective Aiden. However, the story really starts to ramp up when there's the announcement of the Pavlova Ballet Company coming to Twinbells, and Desiree and Crow end up taking a night off from their heists to see the ballet of Swan Lake. When Desiree sees a particular blonde-haired ballerina, it's love at first sight. I enjoyed seeing Desiree blush and get embarrassed and Crow getting confused at first (but quickly catches on to what's going on). Since this is a yuri visual novel, Desiree and the ballerina, Irina, end up together. I like seeing the sweet romance blossom between the two, especially since Desiree easily gets embarrassed, not what one would expect from a phantom thief. lol I only wish that there were more romantic moments between the two. While there is yuri romance, other parts of the story focus on Desiree's past (as well as the backgrounds of the other notable characters) and how she ended up becoming Forget Me Not. Even though I don't personally mind this since I like to focus on stories, I realize that some might want more romance. Anyway, the developer mentioned in an update that an epilogue is coming, so hopefully, we'll get more of that sweet romance between Desiree and Irina. ^^ Also, I love the cast of characters here. Desiree is cute but definitely mischievous while Irina is very sweet but has a dark past, which forces her to take sleep medication and to have special accommodations, such as having her own hotel room while the other dancers have to share. Crow is quite the character, dealing with his own past demons (being falsely accused of a crime). Yet, he's a good guy underneath it all, even going so far as to look after Desiree and assist her with her heists (ok, I don't know if the latter would be considered good, but yeah lol). Then there's Detective Aiden. At first, he seems like a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, but this is simply due to him feeling frustrated over not being able to apprehend Forget Me Not. I enjoyed getting to know him, and his character develops in his chapter as he gets to know the phantom thief and perhaps ends up having a change of heart. With the gameplay, I like the point-and-click elements. It's fun getting info about items, places, and whatnot. Even in the first chapter, there's a fun mini-game in which Desiree has to use her investigative skills in order to figure out
who has the real Black Swan since many fakes are planted
. As for choices, I don't know if they were necessary since the story's outcome is the same, regardless. Still, I like how having Desiree choose what to have for breakfast changes the flavor text as well as the CG that's shown. Before I forget, all of the Steam achievements unlocked for me without any problems. As for the art, it is lovely to gaze. The sprites and backgrounds have this hand-drawn style, and it's obvious that a lot of love and care were taken with it. The use of colors fits well, too, giving off the atmosphere of night versus day. It probably goes without saying, but the CGs are especially drawn and colored well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3461388333 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3461389274 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3461389583 In regards to the music, I enjoyed listening to the various tracks. They give off a range of moods from the adventurous mystery to the sadder, more emotional moments. (Yes, the story does have sad moments although it ends happily. ^^) Especially, I enjoyed listening to the main theme of the game, as it got me in the mood to chase after the phantom thief. XD
Conclusion
Would I recommend The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not? If you enjoy visual novels, want to read one that has fun mystery and a sweet yuri romance, and/or are looking to get those Steam achievements, then it's totally worth checking out. I enjoyed the story so much, and I only wish that I had gotten around to this game sooner. At the asking price, I feel that it's fair, but you can wait for a sale. Finally, I want to give a major thank you to solarProtag for the review copy. The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not was such a delight to read and experience, and I hope that we'll get the chance to read more future visual novels, whether they center around Forget Me Not or they be entirely new stories. ^^
For more detailed, fully complete, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
Fun visual novel with lots of art. Do note there are point and click segments but they are easy to get through. The premise is what drew me to this game and it was fun to learn more about the phantom thief. The game switches povs between 4 characters, so the phantom thief is not the main/only person you follow (2/4 point-of-view characters are female/femme presenting, not the other 2). The story focuses on the phantom thief and her backstory, with some romance which grows naturally in the story. If you are focusing on the phantom thief setting, this game is quite well fleshed out, and I'd say it's a plot story with some romance, not a romance story with some plot. There is a romance epilogue for folks wanting more on that end which was cute and I enjoyed reading it. There is a lot of heart and detail put into this game and I was impressed by the amount of art assets (so many illustrations for just about anything!) and the amount of cut-in art, background art as well. If I had one suggestion is that there be more music to fill in the silent moments, such as slice of life scenes, as a lot of the game doesn't seem to have bgm, only ambient background white noise. I look forward a lot to the devs' next projects!
EDIT: The original review below was written at launch, the 2.0 update adds an Epilogue that expands the romantic plot and makes the conclusion more satisfying, fixing some of the issues I complained about. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I ended up writing a positive review, though I was kinda on the fence and, if possible, it would have been a neutral one. There are indeed several good points about this visual novel but at the same time I found myself disappointed after I finished it. I enjoyed the first half quite a bit, as the "phantom thief" plot combined with girls' love is fresh and interesting; the writing is also good and the art is very cute. The second half though, while it's not bad on its own and is still interesting if the "phantom thief" theme is what you are mainly interested in, completely forgets about the romantic part, as you get the POV of other characters and some backstory. While the final chapter does return to Desiree's POV, her relationship with Irina is again basically forgotten until the very last second, when the game delivers a quick and unsatisfying ending, where the best thing we get is
a peck on the cheek and the hint of a possible future relationship that can only be a long-distance one, considering their jobs
. So in the end I'd recommend this VN to people who are mainly interested in the phantom thief story (which is pretty good) rather than the GL aspect (or at least be aware that the romance is a relatively small part of the game, is mostly platonic/subtexty, and its ending is rather unsatisfying). Personally I consider it a missed opportunity, because if the writing would have managed to get a better balance with the romantic part (and a better ending) it could have been a great VN (though, to be honest, I wasn't very happy with the cliche of
Irina's abusive ex-boyfriend
either, a plot point that seems to be introduced to create some drama but then immediately set aside).
Such an amazing game. Desirée is adorable, Irina is charming, and there's a depth to the world and characters cannot be understated. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time playing FMN and I can't wait to continue! Also, lez beans.
What a sweet little game! There's nothing quite like a warm VN, and this delivered. The different POVs were unique, and the point-and-click sections broke it up enough to keep things feeling fresh. I can tell a lot of passion went into the script, though I agree with others that a touch more romance (or a date omake?) would have been nice. (also, omg, o'malley is so cute....)
Honestly, I was surprised how much I liked it. I don't play LNs but this caught my attention for whatever reason. It is a really sweet story about personal growth and healing while also being a bit of a comedy. The characters are all really fun and likable and the little bits of romance are all really cute. There isn't a lot though but I really enjoyed the phantom thief parts so it doesn't matter much. I highly recommend the game for anyone who wants to sit back, relax, have read(? I don't know the correct terminology for LNs) a good story.
If you're here for the rock-thieving you'll be happy, if you're here for the romance plot you might not get enough. Charming little game with decent plot and romance backdrop (as mostly I'm here for the burglary). A bit unsure why there are point and click sections
as I thought I'd get punished for picking the wrong one during a particular segment, but it really spoon fed you with direction
although it's not too much of a deal breaker.
Also I don't know what to say about some of the aspects going on with Irina as I can't tell if it's a last minute addition or intentionally planned that way. I guess it's one of the things that's narratively would've been more interesting when taken care on screen? Instead we get the "they talked it out offscreen" because we happened to be on a different character's POV. Literally romance as backdrop.
I might not be the super experienced visual novel enthusiast, as this is only my second game that I finished in this category, Still I'm very delighted how this one turned out. I'm also not really into Yuri/Girls Love and am happy that the love story is not face forward but instead pleasing to read as it slowly evolves during my +6 hours of game play. (I'm more of a slow reader and don't rush scenes) The artwork is lovely, the CGs/Cut-Ins were paces nicely and I enjoyed the point and click parts of the game. I personally liked the writing and the structure that followed the main characters: It's not a same story different point of view kind of storytelling but instead an ongoing narrative with some flashbacks to former events. During the game many seeds were planted, questions sprouted everywhere, but the story buds unfold until everything comes together into a nice flower bouquet. (btw. there are a lot of flowers in this game) I recommend the game to someone who is into a charming, relaxing kind of cozy fiction that reminds you that your determination should not stop you from taking care of yourself.
First off, I would like to once again, for the like 10th time, thank SolarProtag for the opportunity to play this lovely game. I really enjoyed each of the 4 protagonist's POV and how they all connect together to paint a full picture of the story of the phantom thief Forget Me Not. Each character had their own way of seeing things and I loved how each character had their own flower associated with them. The visuals were cute and stiking. Great use of cut-ins and sprite work. Each sprite used conveyed perfectly how each character felt, to blushing read, to pure dread. The story is very well written with silly moments and hard hitting emotional moments. The emotional beats hit very well through out the game. Desiree is so girlfail at flirting and we love that for her, she can't go a moment of flirting without getting embarassed 0.000001 seconds after. All in all, great game with great writing and greta use of resources. I'm looking forward to what SolarProtag will make next.
This story is such a treat! Every character in the ensemble cast offers a fun new angle to the story, while contributing to the overarching narrative about the phantom thief of Twinbells and the relationship of the main couple (who, btw, are soooo cute. I want to see them thrive). The final chapter and ending ties everything together nicely. The epilogue is an awesome addition 10/10. Also appreciate the latest update's controller support. — CrowLuvr4Ever
