the author's barely disguised fetish:
The Most Perfect Revenge in the World, developed and published by 티민이, is a short-form narrative experience that uses the familiar framework of an RPG Maker visual novel to explore a surprisingly heavy emotional premise. What initially appears to be a simple, almost quaint pixel-art story gradually reveals itself as a focused meditation on anger, consequence, and the uncomfortable reality behind revenge fantasies. It is not a mechanically complex game, nor does it attempt to be one—instead, it channels its energy into tone, pacing, and thematic clarity. The story centers on a protagonist driven by resentment toward a figure of authority, leading them to make a desperate, supernatural request for vengeance. This setup is straightforward, but the way the narrative unfolds shifts the focus away from the act of revenge itself and toward its emotional and psychological implications. Rather than glorifying retaliation, the game slowly reframes it, examining what it means to truly wish harm upon someone and what that desire reveals about the person making the wish. The narrative is tightly controlled, with minimal branching or player influence, which allows the developer to maintain a consistent tone and deliver a deliberate emotional arc. One of the game’s most effective qualities is its use of contrast. The visual presentation is built on simple, colorful pixel art that initially conveys a sense of innocence or lightness. Characters and environments are rendered in a style that feels approachable and even slightly nostalgic. However, as the story progresses, this aesthetic begins to clash with the darker undertones of the narrative, creating a subtle but persistent sense of unease. This juxtaposition is where much of the game’s impact comes from—it uses familiarity to lower the player’s guard before introducing more unsettling ideas. The pacing is measured and intentional, allowing the narrative to unfold without unnecessary distractions. Dialogue is concise, avoiding excessive exposition while still conveying the emotional weight of the situation. The game does not rely on elaborate twists or complex storytelling structures; instead, it builds its impact through gradual realization. As events progress, the player is encouraged to reflect on the consequences of the protagonist’s choices, leading to a conclusion that feels less like a dramatic climax and more like a quiet, lingering statement. From a gameplay perspective, the experience is minimalistic. Interaction is limited to basic navigation and advancing dialogue, with no significant systems or mechanics to engage with. This lack of interactivity may be a drawback for players expecting traditional gameplay elements, but it also reinforces the game’s identity as a narrative-driven piece. The simplicity ensures that nothing distracts from the story, though it also means that the overall engagement depends almost entirely on the player’s investment in the narrative. The use of RPG Maker as a development tool is evident throughout, both in its strengths and its limitations. On one hand, it provides a cohesive visual language and allows for a focused, intimate presentation. On the other, it introduces a level of technical simplicity that can occasionally feel restrictive, particularly in terms of interface and movement. These elements do not significantly detract from the experience, but they do remind the player of the game’s modest scope. Despite its brevity, The Most Perfect Revenge in the World leaves a noticeable impression. It does not attempt to offer a wide range of content or replayability; instead, it delivers a single, contained narrative that is meant to be experienced in one or two sittings. This approach works in its favor, as the story remains focused and avoids unnecessary padding. It is a game that values impact over duration, choosing to present a clear thematic message rather than an expansive set of features. Ultimately, the game stands out as a small but purposeful indie project that uses its limited scope effectively. It may not appeal to players looking for deep mechanics or branching narratives, but for those interested in short, thought-provoking stories, it offers a compelling experience. Its strength lies in its restraint—by keeping its design simple and its focus narrow, it manages to deliver a narrative that feels more deliberate and meaningful than its presentation might initially suggest. Rating: 8/10
