Very unique and atmospheric game. I recommend buying it on sale as it only took me about 2.5 hours, but I really enjoyed it.

"The Man Came Around" is a rather mediocre more-narrative-than-game "art" experience. The game was made with Construct, the "no code" construction kit "that anyone can make games with", including people who aren't cut out to be game developers. Which has become quite a problem because now there's a lot of games on Steam that maybe shouldn't be. Regardless, let's take this for what it is, and that's not great. What do you do in the game? The game follows five activists fleeing a police state, attempting to cross a heavily guarded border. Make choices that impact the story and characters' survival, facing dilemmas such as resource management, evading authorities, and surviving the elements. But all of this is really barebones and simplified, the gameplay takes second seat (which it never should) to what amounts to a badly written visual novel accompanied by equally awful drawings from the developer, who didn't bother hiring an artist or someone who can handle game visuals professionally. The graphics aren't great, very poor "baby's first Wacom tablet" drawings. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging an eye watering $12.50 USD for this (talk about delusions of grandeur). Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. It's also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who paid money for this... nobody got refunded. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 11 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Communist nonsense with rubbish gameplay.
A short, sweet point-and-click survival with an explicitly socialist/anti-capitalist story. The gameplay isn't groundbreaking, and consists of moving your group of survivors across a forest, avoiding police patrols, while managing their warmth and hunger. It took me an hour and a half to beat, and it felt worth my time. The visuals are unique, and the ambient music is enjoyable enough to make this a fun game that doesn't overstay its welcome.
"The Man Came Around" est un jeu de survie incroyable!
