Its not the longest game ever, but as a companion to the books, it was worth the price. Enjoyed the experience even as a new comer to this genre of game play. The music and voiced dialogue was a cool bonus.
Redwall! This is a very interesting game! Who dosnt love more redwall stories!!!
This game has many issues. To list a few: -I had to go on YouTube and put on my own ambient music for the game because the game just doesn't have any, it's absolutely silent except for random sound effects. This should never ever happen in an interactive experience, I don't know how testers of this game didn't mention this. -There is almost no reason for this interactive game to be an interactive game. The 'puzzles' are frustrating even with hints on because even though you type the same thing in a different way, it won't allow anything other than very specific phrases. You have no impact on the story regardless of what you do, it is simply a linear story where you must do the exact right thing or you won't progress. Failure isn't possible. Without spoiling anything, there's a very specific bit in the middle of the game that should be tense and stressful, but it's just laughably annoying. - Chapter 2 - The ending needed to be longer. For a story that seemed to mostly resolve around redemption, the whole 'redemption' bit was kinda cut short. Here are the reasons why this game gets an upvote from me with all of that said: The game has a soul, somehow. It doesn't seem like it would, but it's just barely engaging enough to be worth the 4.99 price-tag. I'm aware the game is based on a novel, and while I think it should have -stayed- a novel, the game isn't offensive enough that it shouldn't exist. This experience did one thing well, probably what the game was designed for, it made me want to buy a book. There's nothing wrong with text based experiences, this was written pretty well, and had its moments. Escape the Gloomer just needed more. More player agency. Better system for detecting similar words. More possible responses. As a last thing, whoever decided that the player should have to spell the word 'stalactite' after the word had already disappeared from the screen AND would have to do so several times if the exact proper phrase wasn't input- I hate you. I really, really hate you. Good job.
I am a huge fan of the Redwall series, and Mossflower is my favorite book in particular, so I am ecstatic to see it getting some love! Almost everything about this game is solid so far. The gameplay is very well-done. I don't play many interactive fiction games, but I was impressed by the game's ability to offer responses for almost every action I've tried so far. The voice acting is stellar, and it really makes me want Mossflower to get an animated adaptation. And the writing feels on par with the actual Redwall books, which is nice. My only complaint is that there's no way to lose. When I got this game, I thought it was going to involve tense encounters with the Gloomer where you COULD die if you made the wrong choices, and to me, that kind of tension was fun. But being told at the beginning of the game that there were no losing conditions completely killed that tension for me.
I really did enjoy this game. Did I get stuck? Yes, but that was due to my own lack of imagination. Once I got used to how the game worked, for the most part, it went pretty smoothly. A lot of trial and error on my part, but it really immerses you and forces you to think outside of the box. You really have to try and imagine the rooms/locations as they are being described and keep those images in your head as you explore and return to each place. This game was a real joy to play. When I did get stuck and I couldn't find walk-throughs, I contacted the creators on Facebook who directed me to email the developers. I liked how they gave hints and didn't just outright tell you what to do, as frustrated as I might have been at times. This game is definitely worth it and I can't wait for the next one!
This game is fun and imaginative. I love how it perfectly fits into one of the Redwall books. I was even having flashbacks to the daydream like state of reading the book when it reached those parts. Even though, I had read it so long ago. However, you will likely get stuck in at least 2 particular parts of the story and need to look on forums for help. Also, about half of the achievements are near impossible to achieve without the inside knowledge of the game developers or years of text adventuring experience. I reluctantly recommend this game. It is a joy, due to the narration and illustrations, but is so hard-set in the tradition of text adventures that it's unlikely to hold the attention of an inexperienced audience. The game still feels more like a chore than a challenge. If text adventures are your thing, you'll feel right at home and then some.
Wonderful game for lovers of the Redwall series. I loved it, it made me so nostalgic!
Though the game was hard for me, a person who has never played text based adventure games, I gotta say that I greatly enjoyed this! Having discovered the Redwall series just recently, I found this game quite enjoyable, even though having to check a walkthrough every now and then.
A fun story based game, that gets you thinking.
