About
In The Last Question, you step directly into a series of unresolved mysteries.
Question the people involved, search important locations, collect evidence, organize timelines, and find the contradiction that breaks each case open. In the end, the truth must be reconstructed through your own reasoning.
There is no predefined list of questions waiting for you.

Type what you want to ask and speak naturally with the people involved in the case.
Begin with an overlooked detail, pursue a suspicious statement, or present evidence and confront someone with a contradiction.
Every character has their own identity, history, motives, memories, and secrets. They may confess, evade, conceal information, or lie.
There is no single interrogation order. You decide whom to question first, whom to trust, and which detail to pursue next.

Everything an NPC tells you is only one piece of the case.
A response may reveal a new clue—or deliberately lead you in the wrong direction. Important information must be checked against physical evidence, other statements, times, locations, and movements.
Do not wait for someone to volunteer the truth.
Observe their reactions, follow up on details, find claims that cannot all be true, and use evidence to break through the lie.

The investigation does not end at the dialogue box.
In some cases, time continues to advance and characters follow their own schedules. Move between locations, search scenes, collect items, complete objectives, and decide where you need to be—and whom you need to find.
Every movement and decision may cost valuable time. Miss a person and you may lose an essential statement. Overlook an item and the entire chain of reasoning may remain incomplete.
Explore Locations:Move through the case map and investigate different areas.
Track Characters:Compare statements against NPC locations and schedules.
Collect Items:Discover, use, or combine objects connected to the case.
Manage Time:Decide what to do before the next critical event occurs.
Use the case board to organize relationships, testimony, items, and important clues while recording your own analysis.
Bring scattered information together and reconstruct the order of events:
Who had a motive?
Whose timeline does not hold up?
Which statements can be independently verified?
Who is hiding the truth—and why?
What decisive detail have you overlooked?
In the end, you must submit your own judgment and stand behind your conclusion.

The Last Question features multiple original case structures.
One mystery may confine you to a closed room filled with suspects. Another may place you in a living world where you must investigate locations, follow characters, collect items, and respond to approaching events before time runs out.
Cases may include:
Free-form questioning and testimony comparison
Scene investigation and clue collection
Relationship and motive analysis
Timed map exploration
NPC schedules and movement
Item collection and combination
Case-board and timeline organization
Critical choices and final judgments
NPC dialogue is generated in real time and constrained by each character’s identity, memories, motives, established case facts, current game state, and content-safety rules.
Ask the same question in a different way and you may receive a different reaction. But the AI provides character testimony and behavior—not a system-approved solution.
You must still investigate scenes, collect evidence, verify statements, and complete the final deduction yourself.
Live AI Character Dialogue:Type your own questions without relying on a predefined list.
Open-Ended Investigation:Choose your interrogation order, route, and next action.
Dynamic Character Reactions:NPC responses reflect their settings and the current state of the case.
Multiple Case Structures:Experience interrogation, exploration, timed action, item collection, and final judgment.
A Complete Deduction Process:Organize relationships, verify testimony, expose contradictions, and submit your conclusion.
Original Mystery Stories:Investigate cases built around identity, secrets, relationships, desire, and human nature.
The current version includes complete playable official cases and the core systems for free-form questioning, map exploration, clue collection, case-board organization, timelines, and final judgments.
During Early Access, we will continue adding original cases and case formats while improving deduction difficulty, AI character behavior, case pacing, interface interactions, and overall stability based on player feedback.
The truth will not volunteer itself. What will your last question be?

The game is simple, you can tell AI anything and it will give you the clue. But the worst is that the game doesn't stop when you close it. Also Steam doesn't close it but just says it is running. It doesn't appear in the task manager so it can't stop it too. I had to reboot my PC to stop this game. And they don't even refund it because it ran for too long.
Although the sidebar suggests that this game is currently available in English as well as Chinese, this is at best incomplete and misleading. Much, not all, of the initial interface does offer English labeling, but the vast bulk of the game is accessed by downloading cases from a 'market' page that appears to be set up for players to upload their own cases. Currently there are offered seven free cases, all of which are in Chinese, and zero English cases. Although the advent of AI parsers should allow for relatively seamless translation of text on the fly in-game, much of the text involved in the case files, descriptions of evidence, and profiles of suspects and witnesses are all static text that I could only translate using my phone camera. The only English I was able to coax out of the game was the AI generated dialogue replies to my queries from the named suspects. You might note that I mentioned "free cases" above. It appears that even after spending money just to purchase this game, that in the future it will be further monetized by making downloadable new cases purchasable using a point system. Very little information exists about how this will be utilized in the future, but my speculation is that points will be earned by creating and uploading cases to the exchange, but also purchased with real-world currency. I will stress that this isn't in the game yet, but then, neither does the ability to upload your own cases currently. A point of interest to me in any game that features the use of in-game generative AI is the options presented to the user to draw upon that AI. There is currently no way to choose what LLM model is providing the NPC responses, to select either on online third-party model via an API or to set up a local LLM to run offline. In fact, I have not yet seen disclosure of precisely which model is used, though the developer's native language suggests a couple particular sources. Regardless, at this point the developers will likely have to charge players somehow over and above the initial cost of the game from the Steam Store to cover their costs on token use. Perhaps this will be covered by the point cost of individual cases in the future; perhaps there will be some other sort of per message cost or a subscription requirement. In general, I think there is a strong value in creating a niche for a living mystery investigation game with an abundance of cases created by the userbase and leveraging the use of AI chatbots to drop lore and clues into the conversation, but my stringent warning to any English users, at least, is that there is literally NOTHING here for you, and it is quite likely that there will be almost no support in the future. This isn't a game like one of the many, many cultivation or wuxia/xianxia titles out on the market that just require a couple dedicated translators to cobble together an MTL file to play 90% of the game. Without providing an on-the-fly translator in the game client to allow Chinese/English players to transfer files seamlessly, I fear this game will never be of any use to a native English speaker. Add the likelihood of significant cost later down the line to access new cases and this is very much a must pass game.

This is a genuinely interesting detective game that gives you much more freedom than a traditional visual novel. Instead of selecting from a few fixed dialogue options, you can question NPCs directly, explore the map, collect evidence, and decide which clues to present during an interview. The time limit also makes each decision feel meaningful without turning the investigation into a simple checklist. The strongest part is connecting scattered information. A suspicious statement may not make sense until you compare it with an item found elsewhere or question another character. The Case Board is especially useful for organizing suspects, reviewing interviews, and writing down your own theories. The real-time voices and atmospheric presentation also make the characters feel more present. There are still a few areas that could be improved. I would like more control over TTS speed and individual character volume, stronger search and filtering tools for larger clue collections, and an optional hint system that points toward overlooked information without revealing the solution. More interaction with locations beyond collecting items would also make exploration feel deeper. Overall, it is an ambitious and refreshing detective game. It still has some rough edges, but the core idea is strong, and solving a case through your own questions and deductions is very satisfying.
