Fun game! Hope there's a Part 2!!
Highly recommended for point and click fans everywhere! What a wonderful adventure if you enjoy strange and bizarre worlds. The graphics do a great job bringing this story to life and the characters all have their own language, interesting personalities and really neat voice overs. Some will get lost along the way with the challenging puzzles and world logic, but outside the box thinking can go a long way. Also, it can be tough to tell what you might need to interact with due to the unique art style and abstract visuals. All that aside though, if an alien world full of oddities is slightly interesting, than don't pass on this free offering.
Summary
A point & click adventure game with insane amounts of lore and captivating story with insanely unique visuals. Pros + Unique visuals + Captivating story + More lore than needed
Overview
The Knobbly Crook is a point & click adventure game akin to the old school classics of the genre. It sets itself apart by having an insane story and setting that gets crazier as it unfolds and the combination of super well done realistic and drawn visuals. I was floored by how much background lore that's just there, for us players to think about and speculate how it fits within the larger world. The puzzles can get complicated but the more you understand the world and its own set of rules, puzzles get easier to understand and solve. I super highly recommend anyone that enjoys lore, point & clicks, or story-based games to try The Knobbly Crook. It is a true shame there is yet to be a continuation to the story as there are many references to a bigger story and the end is quite the cliffhanger. That´s some great world building! Especially for a free game, this is really well made. Maybe it´s just me, but the puzzles can be pretty vague and it´s often not clear what the next step is supposed to be. This sometimes results in clicking everywhere and nowhere in the hope that something will happen, but eventually I finished it without any help. An hilarious and fun experience, but also a little frustrating wherefore I don´t think I will revisit it.
The Knobbly Crook is an absolute gem! From its wonderfully weird art style to the witty dialogue and clever puzzles, every moment feels like stepping into a surreal fairy tale. It’s hilarious, charming, and beautifully unique. It was an unforgettable experience that deserves way more recognition :D!!!
the best way i can describe this is "jam band fantasy" this is the best free to play game ive played on steam so far, really solid point and click adventure. the puzzles aren't too convoluted like a good few of these type of games. i would pick it up if i where you. its free to play after all
The game just didn’t click with me, but I can see others enjoying it. The game has an interesting and unusual art style that makes it stand out from more mainstream art direction, great world-building with lots of details, folklore and lore that piques the player's interest, a charming voice over in gibberish made-up languages that emphasizes certain words and syllables in a way that is pleasant to the ear. So all in all the presentation is stellar. My main issue is with the puzzles. Solving them doesn’t feel fun or engaging, and at times the solutions to them feel illogical with the animated resolutions to clearing them feeling sluggish/slowing down the plot. I made it off the ship and to the Knobbly Crook and solved some puzzles there, before coming upon multiple dead ends I would have to overcome, which made me come up to the conclusion that the opening scene did not in fact hook me up with the plot due to the vagueness of the opening scene to warranty me soldiering on, and progressing was not fun enough (for me, maybe you will enjoy it) to make me want to keep exploring the main plotline at the expense of my enjoyment. Still, it is obvious that lots of love was put in this game who feels more like a fully-factional art project booming with creativity than a simple game, and so I can't in good conscience give it a negative review just because it didn't suit my taste, especially when I didn't have to pay for the experience too. So try it and make up your own mind.
