Super fun mystery, really interesting and well done
I played the original, Type Help, and while I liked this version too, I will always recommend Type Help for the first playthrough, and this for the second. The writing is so good that either version works well, but I think the atmosphere in the text based version is better, carried so much through the notes left behind by @, as you read the thoughts of the only other person to learn what happened at Galley House. If I had one request for the game, it would be for some of those notes to be adapted to become things the new main character says to herself, for example, she have some of the same comment as @ did on the fate of 2, and the comment at time 13 where @ asks whether it's normal for someone to talk to himself, like one of the people does, which could be both a funny reveal later, and help develop Reya's personality more, as well as push the atmosphere further. Even 3 moments like that would make a big difference. If I could have two requests, it would be for art for when characters sit/lie down, so that it isn't just a silhouette with a face floating above it.
I enjoyed most of the new content, but the last thing we see, scene 0, did not feel like it was dramatic or interesting enough to end on. We already know that what happens to Reya is survivable, so it's not that, and we assume she's going to destroy the machine. I would have also liked a mention of the possibility that there is more than one chain, which was in the text game. And I don't feel like I understand what the point of the Noetic Booster is as an invention.
One of those games that I wish I could experience all over again.
Very fun, but difficult
This game is incredible and such a novel idea. It scratches the same itch as Return of the Obra Dinn which is very high praise. Loved the story and was hooked immediately, although I have to say my one gripe is that the game is really difficult to return to after a break. If you set aside an afternoon it's a great game to attempt in one sitting while all the facts of the mystery are fresh in your head. Highly recommend regardless and I hope for more like this or The Roottrees are Dead
