Another banger of a deduction game, easy recommend if you enjoyed Roottrees or Obra-dinn
A clever and inventive detective mystery, with a plot and reveals that will keep you hooked from plot point 1 to the end
Very much in the vein of The Roottrees are Dead, but with unique spins in the story telling and player interaction, as well as updated presentation. A great game for anyone interested in a mystery, who doesn't mind getting stuck every once in a while- for the reward of connecting the dots you had once overlooked.
Pros:
• A great and compelling narrative with twists and turns you can piece together before the game reveals them to you • Great voice acting • A unique system of discovering scenes that mostly ensures you're getting there through genuine comprehension and not just brute force • A hint system readily available for use in game, that gives tiered hints for when you get reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllyyyy stuck, and doesn't punish you in in any way for using them.
Cons:
• Towards the end of the game, some of the games rules/mechanics that it's set up and have been consistent for 75% of the game seem to fall apart, for the sake of shaking up the narrative • Some of the connections in the last section of the game are really unclear • The final puzzle also works around some rules that are unclear in their operation
Quality of Life:
• After beating the game, from checking the trophies I found out
that apparently there's a mechanic for marking when people die on the timeline, which I never knew or saw pointed out in the playthrough.
Having something that indicates this is a mechanic would have been helpful to keep track.
Summary:
I beat this game in one sitting. That wasn't the plan for the day, but it sucked me in so strongly that the rest of the world needed to go on hold for a while. There's a few points that could be smoothed out, but I would really be nitpicking to pretend that they brought down what a wonderful experience this one. A good kick in the pants that the mystery video game genre has needed for a long time for rewarding actual puzzle solving, and not just putting the square peg in the square hole.
I very much enjoyed Roottrees, so I bought this game immediately when it came out. It was a more narrative experience and went deeper than you might initially expect. A suprising and gripping game with a few moments of genuine shock and revelation. Overall highly recommend. Especially if you enjoy mystery and logic games. Weakest part was probably the voice acting, no big deal. The script was very well done though, and I imagine all the testing and fine tuning of the script to make the layers of the narrative make sense was difficult to accomplish! Loved it, please make another!
Interesting and satisfying puzzle solving.
Very good game, this is the kind of detective game I wish there were more of. Well written mystery that rewards paying attention, the voice acting is great and keep you immersed along the way. Figuring out who is who was fast and easy but the story was so great that I'd say balanced it out. The challenging part was to figure out who was where at any point of the timeline -- SPOILER --
I really liked that when you thought the game was done, it was actually not and you needed to figure out how to stop it before the curse gets to you, although it was maybe a little rushed in my opinion but I still did like the end because the curse was never fully explained. It was kept supernatural and I love it, also makes sense because since Reya has no emotional connection with Ervin, she has no reason to randomly remember him like the others.
A very good pick for fans of Obra Dinn, Roottrees, and Golden Idol. The gameplay loop is addicting, jumping from scene to scene as you piece together the characters whereabouts and the mystery at large. The presentation and voice acting help elevate the experience. Towards the end of the main story things get a bit too linear, but then there's an epilogue that picks the action right back up. Easy recommendation for anyone who's a fan of these type of games.
An addicting mystery horror story with a gradually building existential dread that never truly lets up and only gets worse the more you think about it. There are even things that will change right in your face as the night goes on in a way that makes the ultimate reveal make sense and immerses you
through the fourth wall
into a horrible realization. It's best to experience the entirety of that on your own so I will not comment on the story at large, only that a single transcription line "
A phone was ringing elsewhere
" somehow creeped the hell out of me the most. I spent most of my night playing this until I HAD to sleep and even then this is something someone can complete in a single day. It really just sucks you in like Roottrees. Must have for a mystery fan.
