Senscape recommends The Hunter’s Journal: Blissful Ignorance + Story + Characters + Graphics + Game length, many hours of replay value + It is a smart game, requires a mature vocabulary. “You are the hero”. Or not. It all depends on the choices you make. You receive an urgent dispatch for help lacking information about what you face; you are unable to properly prepare because of this lack of information so you are going in blind and must earn things as you progress. This is about choice and you may or may not succeed in building your strength and weaponry up by the time you meet your strongest foes beyond the village of Pilgrim’s Progress. The game mechanics and the world you enter are very clearly explained. Do take the time to read it all including the encyclopedia of monsters. Everything you need to know to play the game is explained. My daughter and I played this together because you see no violence, blood or gore; combat is done by throwing the dice. That is acceptable to me as a parent. There is an easy reload if you make a poor choice and end up, well, not alive as we did several times 😊. We do that on purpose to see the story arc. This is another well written fantasy tale that will sweep you away to a land you could never imagine. Thanks for another good read!
The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything - Albert Einstein Grindwheel Games' text-based CYOA trilogy of The Hunter's Journals rolls onward with The Hunter hired to solve the mystery behind the afflictions occurring at a Monastery; a challenge that not only will test the Hunter's prowess but also will require scaling a dangerous Mountain in harsh weather conditions and a threat of Harpy's along the way. As with the earlier Journals, the game design cleverly mimics a book in its appearance and layout while also portraying glorious Lovecraftian artwork among its 'pages'. There is also the options of VA, music/sound effects and a Gallery complete with lore, unlocked artwork and a history of this 'Universe'. The writing style is once more beautifully descriptive and keeps the attention span of the Player by adding choice elements and challenges throughout the story progress. There are Achievements that compliment the three differing levels of difficulty that is kept consistent throughout this trilogy which I felt was important to keeping the familiarity and quick-play aspects while allowing the 3 varying Journals to be played in any sequence spoiler-free. A positive to this series that I enjoyed was each Journal experience doesn't have the same game-play and by this I mean that the RP dice battle aspects used to determine the wins/losses have additional features that are unique to each Journal story. Whether it be the enemy having status effects or status enhancements during battles OR there being stages to a battle that involve the use of items as well as relying on dice roll outcomes, I feel these additions add an extra appeal to the series keeping it fresh and unique. As for Blissful Ignorance, this Journal not only makes use of extras that were originally used in Vile Philosophy such as branching battle/exploration areas each leading to the Main Boss finale meaning there is more than one way to reach the Final section, the use of status abilities/disabilities in the dice battles and the use of Staged battles where a Main Boss battle will continue beyond the first RP dice battle BUT Blissful Ignorance adds a more crucial aspect to this particular Journal when it comes to facing the Final Boss. What is this crucial aspect? - I will mention it because I feel for some players it will be a frustrating experience to encounter as the Finale because there won't be many players who will enjoy getting all the way to the Final Boss only to discover that no matter how much Stamina/HP they have or which options they choose it will completely depend on you carrying specific items or there will be no Final battle. Is this a bad thing? Well, if you don't expect it at first play-through it can be a letdown but on the positive aspect it guarantees further replays in order to solve the mystery of what items are needed to trigger that reclusive Final Battle! The Hunter's Journal series was a satisfying experience for myself because it took me back to my childhood love of CYOA books while also satisfying the darker, disturbingly unique art that would make Clive Barker smile with glee. Fans of RP dice based game-play will revel in this third Journal experience as will Choose Your Own Adventure fans who thrive on a Lovecraft theme. Even if you have never experimented with a CYOA text based game, I'd definitely recommend anyone who enjoys reading and adores a more challenging way to hit that 100% completion. Believe me, for this series, it isn't as straightforward to earn that 100% achievement or to fully complete this in 1 or even 2 sittings so the game price is easily worth its weight in gold. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Liked what you see? Similarly to the first 2 games, you follow a well written but difficult adventure, with danger in every corner bigger than ever before, a pretty unique story telling experience :) If you'd like to see what we're playing next with regular updates, or request to review a game, feel free to follow us at: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35688508-Ember-Works-Reviews/
