Alas, it was the "promised place," where Shiori was never meant to go. Finally, a remake of The Forest of Drizzling Rain, that masterpiece of an exploration horror game with multiple endings from the creator of the big hit Angels of Death!

this remake geniuenly destroyed me and my night i love it i love you i love shiori i love koutaro i love
This game was so amazing it gave me so many feelings. Every emotion made me emotional. The game isn't the best, but I love it so much. I'm so attached to this game, it's my favorite game of all time. If i had to choose between my friends, and rain I WOULD DEF PICK RAIN NOT A SINGLE THOUGHT BEHIND THAT. I love their relationship so much its so cute.
The Forest of Drizzling Rain is a modern remake of the beloved 2013 freeware horror adventure created by Makoto Sanada and developed alongside Vaka Game Magazine, with Vaka Game Magazine also serving as the publisher. Rather than simply updating the visuals, this release rebuilds the original experience with expanded story content, additional endings, enhanced presentation, and numerous quality-of-life improvements while remaining faithful to the atmosphere that earned the original game a devoted following. The story follows Shiori Kanzaki, a young woman who visits the secluded Azakawa Village in hopes of uncovering the truth about her family's past. What begins as a search for answers gradually transforms into a chilling journey through supernatural folklore, hidden secrets, and emotional revelations. One of the game's strongest qualities is its commitment to storytelling. Instead of depending on constant jump scares, it creates suspense through careful pacing, unsettling discoveries, and an ever-present feeling that something is deeply wrong beneath the village's quiet appearance. Every conversation and new location contributes another piece to the mystery, encouraging players to remain attentive as seemingly ordinary encounters eventually connect to the larger narrative. The emotional weight carried by the characters gives the horror genuine impact, making the frightening moments feel more meaningful than simple attempts to surprise the player. Exploration and puzzle-solving drive the gameplay from beginning to end. Players investigate homes, shrines, forests, and abandoned locations while gathering clues that gradually reveal the truth behind Azakawa Village's disturbing history. The puzzles are designed to complement the narrative instead of interrupting it, rewarding observation and logical thinking without becoming unnecessarily complicated. The remake also improves navigation and interface design, making exploration smoother while preserving the classic adventure game structure that fans of the original appreciated. A major improvement over the freeware version is the expanded amount of content. New story scenes provide additional background for several characters, enriching both the emotional depth and the overall lore. Multiple endings, including numerous bad endings, significantly increase replay value by encouraging players to experiment with different decisions and explore alternate paths. These branching outcomes do more than simply change the conclusion; they often reveal fresh perspectives on the events unfolding throughout the story, giving dedicated players worthwhile reasons to revisit the game. The visual overhaul successfully modernizes the experience while maintaining its distinctive identity. Updated character portraits, refined pixel environments, dynamic lighting, and atmospheric weather effects breathe new life into every scene. The rain-soaked forests, dimly lit buildings, and sacred locations consistently create an oppressive mood that supports the psychological horror. Rather than abandoning the original art style, the remake enhances it with greater detail and polish, allowing longtime fans to recognize familiar locations while giving newcomers a far more immersive presentation. Sound design also deserves recognition for its subtle but effective approach. Ambient effects such as rainfall, rustling leaves, distant footsteps, and moments of complete silence create persistent tension throughout the adventure. The soundtrack shifts naturally between emotional melodies and eerie compositions, strengthening both dramatic character moments and supernatural encounters. Instead of overwhelming players with loud horror cues, the audio quietly builds anxiety, making even routine exploration feel unpredictable. The characters are written with care, particularly Shiori, whose personal journey forms the emotional core of the game. As she uncovers painful truths about her family and the village itself, her growth feels believable and engaging. Supporting characters are equally memorable, with motivations and personalities that extend beyond their immediate roles in the mystery. Their relationships, fears, and personal histories contribute to a narrative that feels layered rather than relying solely on supernatural elements. Players expecting action-heavy survival horror may find the game's slower pace less exciting, as it focuses primarily on dialogue, exploration, puzzle-solving, and narrative choices instead of combat. Some areas also require revisiting previously explored locations, which can slightly affect pacing. However, these elements fit the game's design philosophy and reinforce its emphasis on atmosphere and storytelling over fast-paced gameplay. The Forest of Drizzling Rain succeeds as both a respectful remake and an excellent standalone horror adventure. It expands the original in meaningful ways without sacrificing the qualities that made it memorable, offering a richer narrative, stronger production values, improved gameplay flow, and substantial replayability through its many branching endings. For players who enjoy Japanese psychological horror driven by mystery, emotional storytelling, and immersive world-building, this remake delivers a compelling experience that stands among the stronger entries in the genre. Rating: 9/10
