Reviews
Story-driven first-person game with vague objectives, tedious navigation through an empty town, and no guidance on how to progress. You play as a detective investigating a series of disappearances. However, the game provides minimal background information, and you’re not really expected to do much actual detective work. Instead, it plays like a typical first-person exploration game, where progress comes from completing small tasks. Apart from basic movement and a few standard actions like jumping, running, and crouching, most of your interactions involve objects. These are handled through two buttons, each performing a different function, but since it’s easy to forget which does what, you’ll often find yourself pressing both. One button lets you interact with objects (like opening doors or flipping switches), while the other picks up items for your inventory or shows a close-up view with a description. This can lead to confusing moments, for instance, using a phone requires you to first pick up the handset, then use the phone again to hang it up. Items don’t have labels when you hover your cursor over them. Instead, you have to watch for a small star icon that changes color to indicate something is important. Fortunately, because the game world isn’t highly detailed, crucial items tend to stand out fairly quickly. Collected objects are stored in your folder, but they’re used automatically when interacting with the correct element, like unlocking a door with a key. The folder also tracks your objectives and any important clues you uncover by reading documents or speaking to characters. After a brief segment in the police station, you’re free to explore the town. While the town is quite large, it’s empty and uneventful. Apart from the central police station, there are numerous structures you can’t enter and a surrounding forest. There’s no in-game map, so even when you receive a clue, you’re left to wander around hoping to stumble upon the right place. Traveling between locations, especially the warehouse, requires a frustrating amount of running. You also have access to your room, where you can sleep to pass the night. This becomes essential because the game features a poorly implemented day-night cycle. Without a flashlight, nighttime renders the game nearly unplayable. This is immediately problematic in the police station; if you don’t manage to turn on all the lights early on, you may not even be able to leave. A possible workaround is lowering the graphics settings to make things more visible. Progression is mostly linear, revolving around interacting with the right object or reaching the correct location. There are few true puzzles, but you’ll likely find yourself stuck regardless because clues are vague and rarely point you clearly toward the next step. Most of the time, I felt like I stumbled into the next story trigger by accident. The game saves on its own, but you never know when this happens. You might decide to quit and then realize that the game loads at a point where you have to repeat a few steps. If that’s not enough, you might spawn back at the warehouse and go through that painful walk back to the town. The main draw is the story, but it’s held back somewhat by a clunky translation that makes it clear English isn’t the original language. There’s a lot of dialogue, which is fortunately voiced, and situations where you just have to wait a few minutes and listen, but you don’t get to choose responses. The game shows some good signs, but there many issues that ruin the enjoyment. I suggest you try it out at a discount.
