the earth is a better person than me recommanded if you like visual novel!
A young woman walks into a forest. The forest is herself. This is a short CYOA game, perhaps 90 minutes across all paths, built on anthropomorphised encounters with the natural world. Each interaction is a different angle on the same interior: an interior psychology in pain, examining itself with the specific combination of clarity and helplessness that comes from bearing the burden of genuine self-knowledge without self-repair. The author writes from inside the experience of mental unhealth rather than observing it from a clinical distance, and the work carries that texture throughout. The forest as externalized interior allows the game to follow lines of thought that direct examination in oneself would make intolerable. The mechanic of each path enacts its psychological argument rather than illustrating it. You do not watch a character make a choice. You make it, and the game ensures you understand what you are doing while you do it. In one path, the gap between the mechanical simplicity and emotional enormity of asking for help is laid bare and for me, that was the game's most quietly devastating detail. I get the feeling that the author is not a healthy person, and that the work is probably better than she is right now, which is sad and troubling, but is also something that I know is true of dozens of people I walk by everyday. Each path in the game takes maybe ten minutes. Some will sit with me considerably longer. I recommend playing through every path in a single session. Let the meditation on the pain felt in oneself accumulate rather than spacing them apart. Let the weight of the words weigh you down. When you're done, go for a walk. Maybe in a forest.
