This game has some potential to eventually become a good game, thus far however it definitely is not. It's pretty much 100% trial and error to progress. You are basically blind so you have to go really slow to find obligatory secret passages and avoid traps. You often have to go over traps or otherwise take damage to progress and take too much damage and you might as well just kill yourself to start over the level cause you ain't beating it. And yes, make sure to die to restart because the game doesn't save between levels even though you begin a new game by choosing a save file, so if you restart you'll have to redo the game from the beginning. Oh and did I mention that there are areas that look like those where you have to take damage but in fact are just trolling you? Of course there are places like that! You move very slowly and each time you interact with something the camera zooms in and stops you from doing any inputs for a few seconds. If your health goes too low your screen becomes red and makes you even blinder than before, one of the few indicators if you can walk somewhere or if a trap is hidden behind something is the color of the frame of the tile which red screen mode eliminates from most of the screen... "The boss" in level two instakills you, you better "run" like the achievement name says, I thought it was a cutscene and since the game isn't turn based, but most enemies are just stationary, the boss just walked up to me and killed me in one swipe sending me back to the beginning of the level and I ain't redoing that level one more time. The audio is very sparse, what's there ain't bad but there's just a real lack of ambiance. The intro cutscene has messed up letterboxing on 16:10 monitors so the black bars ain't actually fully at the top and bottom of the screen, in fact the very first dialog (delivered in speech bubbles,) was partially hidden by the top vignette so you can't read the first line of it. As it is, this game is a mess. If it looks interesting to you as it did to me, I suggest just wishlisting it and looking back in the future to see if it's improved any.
O jogo está muito BUGADO, não reproduz a música do jogo, não salva o progresso, nem mesmo quando saímos do jogo, e isso acaba com qualquer possível diversão. Estou pedindo reembolso.
Belos graficos, historia contada no formato de quadrinhos. Me deparei com um bug ou outro mas por ser acesso antecipado eh normal! Tem muito potencial!
I really liked the game. looks very interesting and promising, the low vision theme, silent and dark environment made me tense as I went through the map. I want to find out what are the possibilities of weapon and enemy combinations I can find in the final version of this game!
Eu to amando a história desse jogo! Bem no estilo daqueles filmes onde o pessoal vai para acampar no meio do nada e então um monstro aparece. A trilha sonora de suspense tá ótima.
A little rough, but very promissing. The presentation and core game mechanic are very engaging, and the art and sound design are on point. Looking foward to this game. Worth the price.
Reviewing card games is what we do!
The expectation of what EA games should be has changed over the years, and nowadays EA games are mostly games with a strongly defined core experience that just need polish and improve the otherwise still solid base gameplay loop. The Devil's Chosen, on the contrary, feels like an alpha version of the game that still struggles to find its selling point. It should be pretty evident that I did not enjoy my short time with The Devil's Chosen. I've restarted the first level 3 times, and could not get pass the stronger version of the enemy and I lost the will to keep attempting. Why? Because most of the gameplay revolved around walking on a barely visible, very zoomed-in path and breaking barrels in hopes that it gives something useful. It often does not and is just a waste of time. Paths you follow are placed in a maze-like structure, so you will often hit a dead end. This is inherently annoying, but it does not help that your walking speed is that of a snail on bad day, and that your field of vision is barely larger that if you would look through a toilet roll. And good luck dropping to low health as you screen will become entirely red, making it even harder to see anything. When you do occasionally found an enemy, to defeat it you go into a stat check. Whoever has a better combination of attack power and health wins. However, any damage taken stays with you, so good luck defeating other enemies if you take damage early. It's a great example of a "You don't know it, but you've already died." Wait, you're reviewing card games, so where is the card play? There is no card play. However, your characters, enemies, and items are all displayed in a card frame, so I guess that counts. I am normally not so harsh towards EA games, but apart from the art direction there was a complete lack of substance from the gameplay perspective. It felt more like a walking simulator with occasional stat exchange with a periodic enemy than a true horror story and fight for survival you would expect it to be. In all good conscience, I can not recommend the game in this state. Also, there is no music, apart from the few repeated atmospheric animal roars every several steps.
The positive
+ Horror card games is a concept worth exploring more.
The neutral
+ Somewhat nice attempts at atmosphere.
The negative
- Lack of engaging gameplay. Unless walking on barely visible tiles and destroying mostly empty barrels is your idea of a fun experience. - Poor UX. Some text in speech bubbles are not even clearly visible. Unskippable animations. Slow movement speed. - Lacks a ton of polish. On release the entire option menu did not show anything.
Conclusion:
Lack of actual card play in a game tagged as a card game is not even the most disappointing experience. Currently too unpolished and lacking substance. Jogo bastante divertido, artes bonitas, vale muito a pena jogar
Very interesting game, really has a horror vibe. You have to play very carefully.
A card game with interesting and unique mechanics. The beautiful art and the horror atmosphere are great too. Recommended!
