good game
The Cursed Tower is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel amateur platformers infesting Steam. This one was made with Unity's Corgi Engine, basically a construction kit to slap together lazy platformers quickly to be shovelled onto Steam. At least it's not GameMaker Studio? Anyway, gameplay here is a blend of adventure game and puzzle platformer as you take on the role of a postman armed with a letter opener, and you must negotiate a spooky castle full of traps to deliver a letter or something. Some effort went into level design and story design here, which is welcome and differentiates this from most platformers on Steam which are usually just low effort GameMaker Studio cash grabs. From a gameplay perspective the game "works", platforming is a little loose but reasonable, so it's down to the flawed technical implementation when considering a recommendation. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The game is completely free. This is noble a gesture that shows dedication to both gamers, and the gaming industry. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
i cant get passed the part where there is a cursed tower.
