The Climate Trail is about climate refugees fleeing ever-worsening conditions after inaction on climate has rendered much of the USA (and the world) uninhabitable. The game combines the adventure and play of the journey north with visual novel elements.

'Even if we were to stop putting out greenhouse gases right now, we'd still face decades of warming' - Jamais Cascio This is an Educational Awareness game that focuses on the Greenhouse Effect and the impact being made to the ozone layer - it sets a scenario where society has collapsed as we know it today and sets you on a survival resource trail. If this isn't your type of game (or you avoid resource management like I usually do!) it's a free choice! William Volk has created a free-play game based around the mechanics of The Oregon Trail yet placing the player into a scenario where Global Warming has caused the Oceans to rise causing countries (or States in this case) to be flooded. This has devastated society to the point a new currency of trade is in use and we see the only way to survive is to abandon the flooded regions and head to higher grounds. In this game, the location is Atlanta, Ga and the destination is the US-Canada border in hope of ample water & resources. You join a group that consists of a Climatologist expert among other specialists and survivors with the aim of trekking a direct trail North to Sault Ste marie managing your resources to survive the perils of the journey. As you travel the journey you will encounter dangers from heatwave exposure or storms and, upon arrival at each US City along the way, you get opportunity to seek extra resources, rest for a day and re-evaluate the rations of your present supplies among other options. There is RNG in how you survive as well as chances of finding extra resources along the journey so careful planning of your days spent on the road are crucial to your team survival. The game is developed in Ren'Py so there is ample choice for game-saves and the settings are available for skip text among the other usual menu choices. I feel there could have been an added menu section for further resource websites as well as a section that provides educational information BUT the game does offer an introduction that gives useful awareness of exactly what the Greenhouse effect is caused by and its effects. I was particularly interested in the newspaper article showcasing how long this has been scientific knowledge which surprised me. The graphics in this game are wonderfully rendered giving a reminder of the art used in some TellTale games and the BGM is not intrusive allowing you to focus on the choices before you. There is a sound-effect used when you find additional resources but outside of this the game remains centred on the story. The RNG and challenges that face you on the trail become repetitive after awhile but wrong choices can have disastrous effects on your supplies & your party members. Even so, the game only had one extra variation of the 3 scenarios so it would have been more attention grabbing if additional threats or choices were included to break up the monotonous trail. The journey itself can be completed in around 90 minutes depending on your play-style and that includes me watching the introduction. Since there are save choices the game can be successfully completed in one sitting but, for those who enjoy the challenge, the game can offer a replay factor to showcase the averse effects on your group throughout the journey. There are no Achievements which would have been an added bonus feature but this is a free educational experience and that was priority I feel in the Developers minds. Overall, if you have an interest in resource management games and this topic interests you then you can't go far wrong but if this isn't your thing at all it may be best to avoid this freeware. ~~~ Liked what you see? Modeled estimate over time.
The Climate Trail was an attempt at making a crap, deficient ripoff of The Oregon Trail from the 1980's, but significantly worse in all respects. It was slapped together badly with Ren'Py, the lazy low quality construction kit designed for making godawful visual novels. But at least a "game" was made out of it... or at least an attempt was made. The game doesn't launch because the developer screwed up the pathing to the game exe file in the manifest. Because it's broken, it's unrecommendable, but of course there's also locked resolution and all the other quality problems associated with Ren'Py. Plus it's just a ripoff of Oregon Trail, but with bad art, gameplay and writing. While this is free, it has made gaming slightly worse because it exists, and also, it's broken, so there's that.
pretty fun. good idea. save the planet! go plant a tree !
Little Timmy died of [strike]dysentery [/strike] boredom. Okay, let's see what the dev is saying: ● 100% FREE and NO ADS! Since the game does not launch, I think the price is fair regarding the offer. (Pro-tip, you can launch the executable directly from the game folder). Great work here, Mr. industry veteran who was the technical producer on such classics as "The Return To Zork,". ● IMMERSIVE STORY AND GAMEPLAY Immersive: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means". Static images with a cheapo font is not what I call immersive. Randomly gathering 40 litres of rain water or 20 kg of food from an abandoned store is preposterous, not immersive. Maybe that is the word you are looking for. ● GREAT CHALLENGES Yeah, staying awake is one on them. ● EDUCATIONAL GAME True if you try to teach the mistakes to avoid when making a game. Otherwise, see "40 litres of rain water" ● GREAT GRAPHICS AND GAME DESIGN You seriously wrote that? Really. Dude, you forgot to take your meds. Conclusion: Low effort shovel ware with educational pretensions.
This game sucks. Way it's made is unreasonable - you make bad choice, you just scroll back. Game won't launch, because deployment is wrongly set, so .exe file can't be found by Steam. I know this is educational - supposed to teach us about global warming, but it fails deeply, as most people "CBA" to open .exe file from game's directory.
The Climate Trail , iklim konusunda harekete geçmemenin ABD'nin (ve dünyanın) çoğunu yaşanmaz hale getirmesinin ardından giderek kötüleşen koşullardan kaçan iklim mültecileriyle ilgili. Oyun, kuzeye yolculuğun macerasını ve oyununu görsel roman unsurlarıyla birleştiriyor.
This is a really great game to remind us all of how well and truly hosed we are, if we can't get global warming under control. Played to the end and, and didn't regret it. (A bit boring or grindy at times, but that's far overshadowed by the existential horror of our planet's current tragectory. Oof.) Definitely worth playing! :)
A pretty basic RenPy game, but relevant nontheless. It's a free game, so i guess in that case we get marginally more than we "pay" for. The core of the game is to ration food & water as a party of four travels by foot towards Canada. During the travel they must endure random severe weather events and forage supplies through the cities they pass. Decisions = Live or Die Again, this game is very basic. But the idea behind it is a good one. I expect more gamedevs will create science based climatechange survival games. Strategy games, FPS, 3rdPS, cartoonish or photo realistic... These kind of games will be awesome to see more of!
