There are 32 levels in total and I beat them in around 80 minutes. The cat is adorable, the music and environments feel cozy and despite not being super long, for the asking price of just one euro, I'd say it's worth it. A great casual game that is nearly flawless. The Cat is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This is a notably badly made platformer with janky controls and handling, poor level design and no appeal whatsoever even to fans of platformers, relying instead on the hopes that including a (badly) hand drawn cat playing with a ball of yarn will generate sales and revenue. That's the absolute state of amateur developers and Steam Direct right there. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The artwork here is terrible, it's all just amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2025 (and this was released not so far back in 2024), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was [b]only 2 players[/b]. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? The Cat is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. A really charming game that plays around with the rotating levels in very interesting ways. It does a good job at introducing mechanics before including them in more complex puzzles. The level design is not as simple as it might appear from the store page, and is satisfyingly challenging in many cases. I am writing this after having completed all easy mode levels, for reference (hard mode levels are, to my knowledge identical without the ability to view the full map of a level). Achievement support might be worth considering, but that's the only recommendation that comes to mind for me.
