Readability, clarity, obviousness, UI/UX is awful. The puzzle logic is confusing, but solvable for the most part. The color logic choice is counter-intuitive. The tutorial gives some introduction, but guessing/exploring the puzzle mechanic logic was its own puzzle. If you don't mind that and the colorful graphics, give this free game a try.

EST Completion Time (1 Playthrough): 30 minutes Achievements Available: 9 EST Completion Time (100% Achievements): 30 minutes Trading Cards Available: 0 (N/A) In its current state, Tessa's Ark is a sci-fi visual novel that examines "perception as reality" as players (in a world where humans exist as beings of pure thought) are confronted with 2 conflicting realities — one in the corporeal world as a human and one in which you are a digital program. It's unclear how many chapters were originally intended to be included in the game; however, with only 1 chapter available the story feels overwhelmingly rushed & chaotic. Additionally, due the overuse of jargon and no in-game glossary, much of the story will fly overhead unless you have a strong understanding of or familiarity with coding/programming and mathematics. Whilst in the digital reality, you will be tasked with completing a series of arithmetic puzzles (involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division) to progress the story. While the puzzles themselves are interesting & relatively easy to solve, the clunky UI and lack of a proper visual tutorial makes understanding how to complete them difficult. Further compounding the confusion during gameplay is the alleged "RPG stat tracking and leveling system" that the developer touts but seemingly removed or excluded in the final version of the game (despite it being implied graphically in-game to exist). Thankfully, the bold & vibrant 2D stylized character art is a refreshing respite from the outdated graphics used for the UI, puzzles, and text. Ultimately, one reality is known to be true: the developer – despite their original plans for this being a much larger, nuanced game – has abandoned this project (albeit leaving it in a complete state via an abridged version). Whether you choose to input this game experience into your reality will depend on whether you're seeking a story-rich experience (to which the game fails) or a puzzle experience (to which, as a free-to-play title, the game does well enough). Which reality will you choose, and can you survive whilst maintaining your sanity?

"Tessa's Ark" is misleadingly described as an RPG, it's not not, it's a simple and pointless puzzle game with garbage cringey cyberpunk fan-fiction visual novel text bolted on the front. Which has the result of making a bad puzzle game even worse. The developer did not understand the fundamental axiom of game development... "show, don't tell". Putting the high school science fiction club dropout fan-fiction writing aside, that just leaves a very weak browser/Flash/mobile tier puzzle game. And what poor puzzles... it's just twiddling around to solve basic arithmetic puzzles. This is not making maths better, it's making gaming worse. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... it's showing a bit of age and won't give you a very up-to-date gaming experience, but it looks more like a game from 1991. Hard fail there. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging, somewhat delusionally, $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. It's also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who paid money for this... nobody got refunded. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Recommended if you get trapped in a dark room for 20 minutes with nothing but a PC with this installed.
