OR FANS OF CHESS LIKE GAMES.
More info below.... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2413855904
THE LOWDOWN:
Sword of Shushan (SOS) is a Strategy Role-playing Game (SRPG) developed using the UNITY engine. It takes place in an ancient Chinese fantasy setting where an epic war between good and evil is about to recommence. Players take control of Han Yunchuan a disciple of Shushan who assembles and leads a band of talented heroes against a horde of ancient demons. Play begins with two heroes who must fight their way across a campaign of twenty-five levels of unique, colourful locations, gaining additional recruits as they progress. Along the way they will fight formations of enemy combatants who attack in waves. Combat is viewed from an isometric perspective, combining elements of chess-like strategy with those of squad-based tactics. WEGOUGO is used to determine movement, combat and other actions. Levels are divided into grid squares, where heroes must be placed in tactically beneficial locations. Key tactical factors include: formation, positioning, movement range, line-of-sight, skill range and areas of affect. Unique mechanics see every unit favour one of five elements. Attacks combined with these elements across teammates lead to enhanced attacks and defending, especially against enemies with weaker elements. Terrain serves to provide blocking points or restricting line-of-sight attacks against the players units. Movement allows placing heroes close to each other for the benefit of certain abilities and to use or exchange items such as healing potions. Alternatively it can be used as a foil to attract enemies into coordinated traps. Enemies are engineered to spawn consistently at the same places in every game across every difficulty. Some spawn and remain in position until a specific turn activates them or heroes get to close. The AI is geared to attack the weakest or most exposed enemies when it can. Making use of spells to heal its own units or attack multiple heroes at once. On levelling characters can upgrade up to four skills, four times. Once every three levels. Between levels players can purchase weapons, armour and trinkets from a large selection of inventory. These fill a handful of slots for each hero to increase particular stats. Graphically its looks very pretty. Chinese voice-overs add to the overall ambience. As does the soundtrack. The game has a fair amount of character based dialogue which appears mostly at the start of battles. The English translation was not made by an native English speaker. There are four difficulties from Beginner (Medium) to Hard (Grandmaster). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2413854038
THE GOOD:
+ Around ten individual heroes with varied tactical benefits and weaknesses to control. + Characters possess three skill-based and magical abilities, upgradable to four levels. Plus a unique special ability. + An extensive inventory of equippable armour, trinkets and weapons and potions. + Post battle phase allows for health restoration, purchasing and selling of items and re-equipping between combat. + Challenging, punishing enemy AI. + Extensive autosave feature and quick save. During and between battles. Except the hardest mode. Needs more slots. + Some amazingly rendered animations when abilities are used. + Full 360 rotation and zoom-in/out camera.
THE BAD:
- There is no overwatch. No zones of control. Does have retaliation. - Non-native Man-Eng translation. - Overwhelming combat on two hardest difficulties. Even Warrior is very difficult. - Needs a longer tutorial. To demonstratel the nuances of tactical combat. - No character development. No skill trees for varied character tactical options. - Worthless AI controlled allies. - Very restrictive initial setups and opposition rosters for each level. - Optional reward locations on every level containing equipment and treasure. Can barely be reached before battle ends. Always the same contents. - Some GPU overheating issues. Fans come on fairly quickly. Limited video settings. - Cannot change difficulty mid-campaign.
AND THE REST:
* Fast-paced combat/gameplay. * Fitting Chinese inspired soundtrack and audio. * Graphically pretty. * Minimal narrative develops story and keeps the game flowing at a good pace. * Limited replayability. * All factors balanced but for hardcore play. Spawns, enemy numbers, starting location, number of heroes, etc. * Non-standard GUI. Uses context menus for each character. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2413855435
ANALYSIS:
SoS packs a pretty intimidating challenge. One that will either be loved or loathed depending on your disposition. It is hardcore without even the hint of an apology. On every level the party was outnumbered, outmatched and outgunned. After a couple of aborted attempts on the hardest difficulties I switched to the easiest setting to get a better understanding of gameplay. Getting the most out of this game will require complete comprehension of the war-chess style combat engine. This includes the nuanced tactical factors that cleverly combine, to make your heroes more deadly. The path to achieving this felt obfuscated due to the basic tutorial and poorly compiled Man-Eng translation. Attempting to decipher narrative and vital tool-tips proved hap-hazard at best. As if playing with one hand-tied behind my back. The graphics were very pretty and complimented by a simple yet stylish soundtrack. Snippets of overly serious sounding voice-acting that punctuated the action reminded me of my fondness for old Chinese movies. Even if I had no idea what they were saying! Fans of Chinese stories and movies will appreciate the overall ambience, theme and setting. I certainly did. Selecting from an increasing inventory of items was a joy. Sometimes selections felt limited to one option. Yet there were times when more than one could be contemplated. The fixed selection of character skills was disappointing. Though levelling these proved to be balanced. At least on the easiest difficulty. With its restrictive design and scripted spawns, the game lacks dynamism resulting in an almost on-rails experience. One that limited replayability to; trying different tactics, maximising different abilities or equipping different items. Replaying on harder difficulties would essentially feel like playing the same game except the enemies being tougher. Having skill-trees with separate branches could have increased replayability immensely. As would picking a limited number of heroes from the available roster for each level.
SUMMARY:
Having never played an SRPG (to date) the game was alien to my personal preferences. On easy it should not be beyond most players. On harder difficulties the AI punishes the slightest mistakes. Something not out of place for this genre. SoS is well-made with above average production values (apart from the translation.) Consider getting this if you intend to play on easy or like a masochistic challenge. Similarly if you prefer undynamic level design and execution. Recommended only for hardcore fans of SRPGs.
Game is too difficult and translation is poor.
Intensive battles and moderate difficulty. Be ware of enemy attack range and the cycle of the 5 elements (earth > water > fire > metal > wood > earth).
