Gotta admit this looked fun at first. I thought I was actually gonna play some Fire Emblem like game with pixel characters and 3D environments. All I got from playing this was not even a turn base game but a still move your character across the screen to some enemies and pray you have a faster reaction time before the enemies kill your characters. I mean hell I could barely see where I could move my character in Chapter 2 because the move squares blend easily with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ snow on the ground. The voice acting was terrible its like nobody cared about their role nor the story and I've seen worse. This is just bad.

There's a good game idea hidden deep down in there somewhere, but this game I played isn't it. I understand this is a student project presented for free, howeverr I think that with some polish and a much better story the core gameplay mechanics and the presentation could make for a really good tactical RPG. The plot is the most cliche Lord of the Ring rip-off you could imagine, the character art is very "I found this on deviantart"-esque and lacks cohesion with the main game artstyle, the combat is clunky. I love the game's artstyle, it looks fantastic. The character portraits however I dislike heavily. The game starts with a gameplay tutorial that frankly does it job alongside with presenting the background to a very bland story that'll likely make you drop the game as soon as you started. The combat is a great idea if only it was timed slightly better and the AI wasn't as suicidal as it is. However as it currently stands I just mash and the AI kills its own characters. The timings always feel like they could be .2 seconds faster or slower, they never feel just right, especially after a movement. The "tactical" part of a tactical RPG doesn't feel very tactical, just don't be dumb enough to let your characters go alone and you'll probably be fine. AoE attacks don't highly what they effect so you'll often just end up damaging your own characters instead of the enemy. Another poorly implemented aspect is the leveling system which frankly just feels tacked on. You don't have much control over it, just kill X amount of enemies and you gain a level up. The developper could just remove the levelling system altogether and make it so that new levels unlock new skills and enemies, there's no reason for this game to have a levelling system as you don't really juggle characters at all, they're always preselected for you by the plot. Out of combat movement from one location to another should simply be click to move, I don't know why it remains in the tile-based movement there as it just makes things annoying. More annoying is that the developper had the foresight to make your companions teleport to you after a combat encounter, which means they had realized that movement was clunky enough that someone would just move a single character along. The worst aspect of the game, however, is by far the plot. It's very much a lord of the ring rip-off and lacks any amount of originality. If you want to experience lord of the ring read lord of the ring or watch the movies, but this is as bland and generic as fantasy gets. There's no real stakes, the characters are just stereotypes of their D&D class counterparts and it feels like it's a D&D campaign that was translated to a game without any of the fun and creativity that a pen and paper RPG system like D&D would bring. It's frankly very lame. The sound design is also all over the place, some sound effects are ear-bleedingly loud while others are too quiet. And the voice acting, oh my. You'll find better voice acting in gachimuchi than here, frankly. Do I recommend this game? No. But I think that the gameplay formula with some polish, a more cohesive art direction, better voice acting and a storyline that's written with care could make for a terrific game. It's a good concept executed poorly.
Maybe it's just me, but Sword of Atlas seems to combine the worst traits of both RTSs and Turn Based RPGs: As RTSs, you control a bunch of units in a large map where enemies are moving and attacking in "real time" (they can pause while you're selecting moves if you select this Option), which means some of your units can get surrounded and killed while your attention is elsewhere. As a turn based tactical RPG, you move around slowly, one unit at a time, in the same large map. For me, this game would be immediately improved if it became a simple TRPG with a visible initiative queue that everybody obeyed.
It's a short and nice game... 3.6h It has problems (especially in situations where it tries to make two text boxes at the same time) and also that the text boxes don't stop the game... If this happens, you have to restart the level (it only happens at the beginning of the first level or the beginning of the last) In addition, you should know that in the last battle you have to wait for the eye to cast its magic and only then kill it.... It's not too hard and the game is free. So I recommend trying it.
It's free, so you can be your own judge of if it's worth your time, but I kinda feel like these are 18 minutes I could have spent doing anything else and been better off for it. This feels like a student project. The VA is so bad it's actively worse than nothing, especially since volume levels aren't consistent. The controls are a mess, no controller support, no pan to move, no attack animations. Sure looks nice though, so credit to the artist(s).
pretty cool game, very slow paced when it comes to moving around/attacking.
