Basic Information
Title: Super Star Developer: SakuraGame Publisher: SakuraGame Genre: Dating Simulator
General Impression
Super Star is my first attempt at playing this type of game and also reviewing it. I’ll start by stating very clearly that this IS NOT hentai. I doubt Steam would even allow that much adult content and even if this game has tags such as “mature” or “nudity”, do not let it deter you from giving it a try. It’s a datesim alright and the tones of it are mature enough but it never digresses into a realm of indecency. You have a dress-up section as well as conversations with several options to choose from, which give the game some degree of replayability. Its only drawback has to be the slightly poor translation which sometimes makes things confusing but it’s understandable given the circumstances and limited demand/market for this particular type of gameplay in the West. I consider it a breath of fresh air from generic indie titles and for all that it offers, the price tag is indeed justified.
Strong Points
+ Pretty much what you’d expect and no bugs or glitches. + Steam Trading Cards & Achievements.
Weak Points
- Engrish AKA “lost in translation”. Rating 8/10
This review was submitted for Imperial Reviews and Cubbes.
Super Star is a light hearted and simple time management sim (with partial vn themes) where you "raise" a would be idol to excel in several areas: singing, acting, modeling, etc. It does take a few playthroughs to get full achievements/cg's. The dev also released a full uncensor patch for the game through Steam. There are no "hentai" scenes, but are some mild nudity scenes now, but nothing too extreme. To see what I mean, and unless they're taken down, just check out Steam's screenshots section of the game. I enjoyed playing this game. I also understood most of the cultural references and even though poorly translated, I understood 99% of the dialogue in the game. I do wish the translation was better, but due to the recent price reduction, I doubt the translation will be any better than it is. Really, if not for the translation, I see no reason to give this game a negative review. If you at least TRY to understand the dialogue, it does get pretty interesting towards the end. There are even some funny and amusing moments in the game. The dialogue reads as if you listening to an Asian speaking English, who learned it from a textbook. Overall, and especially now for the price, the art and gameplay are pretty good. If you play the game with an open mind, you're more likely to be amused by the dialogue rather than overly critical of it. One last thing, the Dev was pretty involved with this game and seemed really friendly to me. It shows a Dev cares about their product and customers when they go out of the way to offer partial refunds or even extra keys to those who paid full price, after the price drop.
This visual novel with stat management and RPG mechanics by SakuraGame features an unmarried couple Bill and Eudora( 星海 and 樂謠 in Chinese version or custom names for both main characters). Bill was originally living alone in his apartment as owner of a talent agency he formed after resigning from Tianhuang Entertainment with no aspiring superstar in his agency for six months and Bill spends his time playing computer games to escape his problems. One night, after playing a computer game "My Girlfriend is a Big Star" where upon reaching the final stage in the game, he suddenly found a pretty girl Eudora sleeping in his bed. Upon asking Eudora further, he found that Eudora appeared in the real world to live with him as his live-in girlfriend and as his only aspiring superstar working in his agency as a reward for Bill having reached the final stage and being very lucky in striking a magic number that is one out of 10 billion in his computer game. Eudora has a very important caveat, Bill only has 3 years to groom, train and promote Eudora as his only aspiring superstar in his agency before she returns to the virtual world in his computer game. Along the way, Bill and Eudora will also have the opportunity to talk with various friends, contacts, acquaintances, rivals, patrons, mentors, celebrities and trigger various events. Each event and job will have specific attribute requirements needed to start on it with varying rewards. As Eudora's attributes increase and she completes more rewarding jobs, various storyline events will trigger where a short visual novel scene will play with at least one CG(some are censored in the Steam version) that will be unlocked at photo gallery at main menu, Eudora's attributes will increase, a new outfit or accessory will be unlocked or a newspaper article describing Eudora's accomplishments will be shown along with a Steam achievement that will be unlocked to reward the player. After finishing the game at the end of 3 years, a score will be given depending on how many achievements and newspaper articles the player has obtained which will award the player more diamonds on next playthrough for obtaining higher scores. In subsequent playthroughs, the diamonds can be used to purchase further useful upgrades such as to reduce the time spent, the amount of gold coins needed to buy a goldfinger and succeed on a failed attempt or to buy a wish which will automatically complete any 10-day job or event with 3 stars. In the first playthrough, it is not possible for Bill and Eudora to progress more than approximately halfway through the game, unlock all CGs, outfits, accessories and celebrity cards or to complete the game with the best ending out of 3 possible endings in this game. The story and plot is written as a romantic comedy with drama, fan service and plenty of comedic references to various celebrities, pop and movie culture. The scriptwriter for this visual novel does have a sense of humour by giving a jealous rival of Eudora the Chinese name of Li Mochou(李莫愁)where a famous villainess in a popular Chinese swordfighting novel has the same name. However, there are many translation errors in the English version of the game(the Chinese version has considerably fewer errors) and some of the errors in translating the Chinese names of certain characters to English with dialect ended up making the name meaningless or the interest factor and humour falling flat. (Eg. 小S in Chinese version which refers to Dee Hsu by media outlets is named as Elephant Dee in English version, 甄子龍 referring to Donnie Yen is named as Bruce Lee in English version instead, while affectionate nicknames for certain celebrities such as 周董 for Jay Chou, 華仔 for Andy Lau and 周星星 for Stephen Chow by media outlets are lost as a result of no such equivalent in the English version) The game has 6 BGM and 4 Mandopop and Cantopop songs to match certain event segments much later in the game during 2nd playthrough onwards. Although the BGM and songs are pleasant and generally match the happy themes in this visual novel as a comedy with drama, the songs are played too infrequently in the game(only during very short and specific visual novel segments that are played for less than a few minutes each time) while 3 of the BGM are played too frequently in the game to become repetitive throughout the 10-20 hours spent playing through this visual novel over 2 or more playthroughs. Artwork can be a major attractive point of this game, it can also be a turn-off for others. For those who feel strongly against any of the CGs and artwork sprites as being copied and adapted from other games for this game among a few reviews and external website articles, look elsewhere. Otherwise, read on. The CGs and character sprites in this game are great with many different outfits, event CGs and newspaper article photos of Eudora and the portraits and sprites of the famous celebrities are fairly similar to the actual person on TV, movies and newspapers. The game also has a large variety of multiple cute chibi artwork of Eudora carrying out an activity, job or event. Overall, this game is highly recommended for those who can read Chinese(or don't mind reading through a visual novel with many errors in the English version), follow the Chinese entertainment scene to some extent or have some background knowledge of a few famous movie stars/singers/models, are looking for an entertaining game with stat management mechanics and luck-based outcomes that are not too difficult as a cute and funny romantic comedy with plenty of humour and comical references to various modern pop culture icons and don't mind a few controversies surrounding this game, then this game is for you. I am also recommending this game because one of the outfits Eudora can wear is a cute bunny girl outfit. I have also voted this game for the Best Alternate History award in 2018. く__,.ヘヽ. / ,ー、 〉 \ ', !-─‐-i / /´ /`ー' L//`ヽ、 / /, /| , , ', イ / /-‐/ i L_ ハ ヽ! i レ ヘ 7イ`ト レ'ァ-ト、!ハ| | !,/7 '0' ´0iソ| | |.从" _ ,,,, / |./ | レ'| i>.、,,__ _,.イ / .i | レ'| | / k_7_/レ'ヽ, ハ. | | |/i 〈|/ i ,.ヘ | i | .|/ / i: ヘ! \ | kヽ>、ハ _,.ヘ、 /、! !'〈//`T´', \ `'7'ーr' レ'ヽL__|___i,___,ンレ|ノ ト-,/ |___./ 'ー' !_,.:
All the trolling and stuck-up old men aside, this game is actually pretty bad. It is kinda along the lines of Princess Trainer, but the training process is incredibly boring, the events are minimal, the story is rather boring and the English translation is just a little better than if it was made by google translate. Would not recommend. Refunded.
Super Star is; at it's core, a stat/time management game with visual novel elements. It's very simple. You wake up in bed next to some girl that you apparently made up (or she came out of a video game, the details are a little fuzzy). So naturally, you decide that you have to make her into a star through ads, music, television and movies. To do so, you'll have to get her trained up in a few stats (like "charm" and "sports") so she can complete various tasks, be rewarded for reaching minor milestones, make money, buy clothes, be famous, insult you constantly, flirt with weird named NPCs (Elephant Dee?) that occasionally look like real celebrities (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory and Michael Jackson. I ♥♥♥♥ you not.), have drunk sex with you (
b00bs
), unlock various and sometimes TOTALLY random CGs and eventually become mega famous. Oh, and you have 3 years to do this. At the end of that time, that's it. She turns back into a pumpkin or whatever I guess. Okay, so yeah - the English is bad. I mean, REALLY bad. Google translate bad. Possibly worse. But it's done so in an almost charming and heartwarming way. The game is not serious. It's a time filler with randomly interspersed nipple shots. The story is really just the background to give you the drive to see more dialogue, get more cash . . etc etc. As for the gameplay. It's insanely simplistic. Click a button, hope the RNG gods favor you so you can get 3 stars, collect your reward and move along. That's really it. You can also buy clothes and random props to artificially boost stats slightly (or to have your girl dress differently on the main screen). It sounds dull doesn't it? I certainly thought so. And yet, I'd fire up the game, decide I was going to play for 10 minutes, and suddenly that "one-more-turn" mentality kicked in and I'd find myself playing for an hour or more. This was supposed to be a game I farted around with, got a few achievements in, and then moved on. I finished the "story" 3 times because I'll be damned if I wasn't going to make Eudora a freaking Pop icon! My virtual girlfriend or whatever-the-heck-she-was deserved that much! I mean, she cooked me foreign noodles and sauce in a frilly apron! I owed it to her. And therein lies the reasoning behind the thumbs up. I paid a little over a dollar for this game. It's basic and simplistic and I somehow managed to get a solid 8 hours out of it without even realizing it. That, my friends, is bang for your buck. *winkwinknudgenudge*
Trash game that has no redeeming qualities. It fails at everything it attempts to do. Not worth playing for the nudity, story, dialogue, characters, gameplay, or anything else. Super Star is more management sim than it is a regular visual novel, you'll mostly be leveling your girl's stats up so that you can complete "events". The problem with this is there's no sense of accomplishment to justify the repetition. You don't feel like you're rewarded for doing anything and the characters are very generic/soulless. You'll come across some nude pics (with the uncensor patch) as you progress through the story, but they're not seamlessly integrated with the pacing of the "story". If it's nudity you're after, you can do much better than this game. The nudity content is subpar at best. The translation is abysmal, and not the kind that makes you laugh at how bad it is.. it's just bad period. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to fix, the script probably isn't very long, but there's nothing interesting about it so maybe they shouldn't bother. I could get past the bad translation if there was anything else enjoyable in the game, but there's not. There are 3 endings. You're expected to play through the game more than once so that you get "diamonds" that let you buy in-game cheats that will help you to 100% complete the game in the time allotted. My first playthrough was so boring that I didn't have it in me to play through it a 2nd time. I feel like the devs should be paying you to play this, it's a waste of time. If you got this for "free", idle it for cards and be done with it. That's about the only value there is to it. There are so many better VNs out there with much higher quality stories, or better porn content, so please don't waste your time with this garbage.
Are your dreaming about being a multi platinum singer? Or are your aspirations focus on being a huge movie star? You might dream about being honourable philanthropist; or even being the greatest dancer in the world. Those are only dreams, right? I thought so. Well, there is a solution for you: Super Star - game girl that will represent everything you can't do with your ugly face, weak mind, and no talent whatsoever. Just dream about it really, really hard ... and next morning, you wake up hard, because there she is - lying next to you naked, ready to f... fulfil your dreams. She is fast learner. She posses unlimited ceiling, so her talent can grow to the skies. Be careful tho. You have only three years to achieve, thru her wits & talents, everything you want. Will you be able to? Will you? WILL YOU? Super Star is quite alright, in most mediocre meaning I could ever think of. You are basically manager of girl that somehow appeared in you bed one morning, and you trying to make her a superstar. Lots, and lots of clicking. Reading, if you are into visual novels. Anime boobs - which I feel, were kinda distracting and out of place a little, but I understand need to shift some copies, and made it more attractive for certain audience (I'm not complaining, for the record). OKish music and basic visuals. That's it. There is not much meat in this game to chew on, but surprisingly, I got lost in it until I finished one playthrough. I realise two and half hour are gone, closed the game, and starting to asking the age old question: What the hell I am doing with my life. If this game is right up your alley, pick it up on sale or support developers with full price buy, and enjoy ... whatever you want in this game. Grade: Anime Boobs Are Special Category with Special Kind of Ranking ;) If you are not satisfied with grading send your complaints do devs, they added them. It's not my fault.
The translation alone is worth the price. Hours of laughter and bewilderment guaranteed. Otherwise, a nice game with nice graphics and a story as generic as it can be. A clickfest, really, ideal for the moments when you don't feel like doing anything that involves your brain.
The game can be fun if you like this type. It's a mix of idol manager and clicker genre. Finishing it is easy but collecting all photos require much more work, especially since there is no info telling you how to get missing photos. You have to figure it out on your own (or use a guide). I managed to complete it 100%, and have to say I enjoyed it. However, I cannot recommend a game with stolen assets. Yes, the art used in this game was stolen and the publisher was informed about this (caught red handed). SakuraGame/Paradise Project is a terrible publisher. Avoid buying this one or any other game from them.
Play this game back in the day blind drunk. Sobered up years later and sadly not as good as I thought.
