I know this was only £2, but it's full of bugs. Minor things like text overlapping, spelling errors on almost all sentences. Then there are movement bugs that allow you to move to places you shouldn't be able to go. When you pick up items, the square they were on cannot be move over. But the worst thing is the completely unbalanced gameplay. Random encounters only happen every 3-5 mins meaning you can't level up and money is scarce. Avoid.
This is a really fun nes / snes style rpg. retro yet modern :)
Sugar Story is a small-scale but earnest role-playing game that embraces classic genre traditions while filtering them through an offbeat premise and an unmistakably indie sensibility. Developed by Source Byte Sp. z o.o. with Nikodem Świder and published by Source Byte, the game initially presents itself as a whimsical, almost comedic adventure, yet gradually reveals a more conventional RPG structure built around party growth, escalating stakes, and a looming mythological threat. Its charm lies less in polish or spectacle and more in how it takes a deliberately humble starting point and allows it to spiral into something unexpectedly ambitious. The narrative begins in an almost absurdly mundane way: the protagonist’s family runs out of sugar, and it becomes your responsibility to go out and find more. This simple errand quickly becomes a narrative hook, drawing the player into a world that expands far beyond its domestic origins. What starts as a lighthearted task soon turns into a journey involving strange lands, dangerous enemies, and ultimately a confrontation with an ancient and malevolent god. This escalation is handled with a straight face, allowing the contrast between the trivial beginning and the epic destination to create a distinctive tone that blends humor with sincerity. Combat is built around a Time Progress Battle System that reinterprets traditional turn-based mechanics. Instead of rigid turns, actions are governed by timing and recovery gauges, meaning characters act as soon as they are ready rather than waiting for a fixed order. This creates a more fluid rhythm to encounters, where quick decision-making and awareness of pacing can be just as important as raw stats. Battles feel dynamic without becoming overwhelming, and the system encourages players to pay attention to how quickly allies and enemies can act, rewarding careful planning rather than brute force. Party composition plays an important role in keeping combat engaging. As the story unfolds, new companions join the adventure, each contributing unique abilities and personality traits. One of the more memorable allies is a friendly slime that serves as both a combatant and a source of lighthearted interaction, reinforcing the game’s quirky tone. These characters help give emotional texture to the journey, even if their development is relatively modest compared to larger RPGs. The focus is less on deep personal arcs and more on creating a sense of camaraderie and shared momentum as the stakes rise. Exploration and progression follow familiar RPG patterns. Players move through a series of areas, interacting with NPCs, solving light environmental puzzles, and uncovering items that support character growth. Experience points, skill improvements, and equipment upgrades provide a steady sense of advancement, while optional secrets and side activities reward curiosity. The pacing is generally relaxed, allowing players to absorb the world and soundtrack without feeling rushed, though this can occasionally verge on slow for those expecting constant narrative or mechanical escalation. Visually, Sugar Story adopts a 2D pixel-art presentation that clearly reflects its indie roots. The environments are colorful and readable, and character sprites carry a distinct anime-inspired charm. While the artwork lacks the refinement and animation density of higher-budget RPGs, it succeeds in conveying personality and mood. The soundtrack complements this aesthetic well, shifting between playful themes and more dramatic compositions as the narrative grows darker, helping anchor emotional beats even when visual storytelling is restrained. The game’s limitations are tied closely to its scope. Production values are modest, and some elements—such as animations, interface clarity, or narrative transitions—can feel rough around the edges. The story’s tonal shifts may not resonate with everyone, particularly players who prefer either pure comedy or fully serious mythological storytelling rather than a blend of both. These rough spots can break immersion at times, reminding players that they are engaging with a small, experimental project rather than a fully polished RPG epic. Reception reflects this niche positioning. Some players appreciate the game’s sincerity, unusual premise, and mechanical experimentation, while others are less forgiving of its pacing and limited refinement. Enjoyment often depends on expectations: those approaching it as a quirky indie RPG with personality and mechanical curiosity are more likely to find it rewarding than those seeking depth, narrative complexity, or technical smoothness comparable to mainstream titles. Overall, Sugar Story is a curious and heartfelt RPG that thrives on contrast—between the trivial and the epic, the humorous and the serious, the familiar and the slightly strange. Its Time Progress Battle System provides a fresh twist on traditional combat, and its narrative journey manages to surprise simply by how far it travels from such a modest beginning. While it may not leave a lasting mark through innovation or polish, it offers a sincere, characterful experience for players who enjoy discovering small RPGs with unconventional charm and are willing to embrace their imperfections. Почему то квесты на убийства не засчитываются, ни крыс ни змей
https://youtu.be/jq4AAnGC2e8 Taking just the basic requirements to be considered a RPG and nothing more, the irreverent style to story and systems are a source of constant friction.
