SteamDolls - Order Of Chaos : Concept Demo This game holds a lot of promise. I had fun playing the one level demo. The devs are really friendly and ultra-responsive. The game feels good and I'm sure they'll work on the game thoughout early access to make a good, complete full game.
⠷⠿⠾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⡾⣷⢿⠾⠷⠿ ⠄⠐⠠⢠⣭⣙⢻⣟⣿⣻⣟⣿⣻⣟⣿⣻⣟⣿⣻⠟⣩⣭⡠⠄⠄⢰ ⡇⠄⠄⣿⣿⣿⣷⡌⠻⢏⣋⣉⣉⣉⣉⣋⠿⠝⣱⣾⣿⣿⣷⠄⠄⣸ ⣟⣆⠄⡻⣽⣿⣯⣵⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣮⣽⣿⣻⢺⠄⣸⡿ ⣽⣟⣶⣈⢁⣾⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣿⣲⡈⣡⣾⣻⣟ ⡷⣿⣻⢁⣿⣿⡿⠾⢟⣯⣿⣟⣿⣻⣟⣿⣻⣽⣷⣿⣺⣺⠘⣯⣿⣽ ⣻⣟⣿⢰⣿⡏⠄⢶⡎⢹⣿⣽⣟⣿⣻⣽⡿⡏⢓⣛⢳⢯⠄⣿⣽⣾ ⣯⣿⡝⣼⣿⣧⣠⣀⣠⣾⣻⣾⡛⢻⣻⣽⣧⣾⣿⢿⣯⣟⡆⢿⣯⣷ ⡾⣷⠁⠋⠑⠈⡉⢻⣿⣛⠻⠽⢛⠻⠿⢛⣽⣷⡟⠉⠄⠈⠙⠈⣷⣿ ⣻⡿⣄⠄⠄⡀⢀⢸⣿⣻⣿⢿⣿⣿⡿⣿⣻⣾⡆⠄⠂⠄⠄⣰⣿⣽ ⣯⣿⢿⣦⡀⠠⡜⣗⡯⣟⣾⣻⢷⣻⣽⣻⢽⣺⢞⢦⠁⣠⣞⣿⢷⡿ ⢷⣿⣻⣽⡿⣷⣦⣌⣈⡊⠎⠮⠫⠎⠞⠜⣑⣁⣡⣶⣻⣯⣿⢾⣿
full play through of demo here: https://youtu.be/_qb9BVNvJds My first exposure to the Steamdolls universe was a VR game demo that was out a few years ago. I loved it right away. It had a cat in it you could pet while it slept an it purred. What's not to love? All joking aside though This metroidvania style game is super fun to play. It has the same gorgeous gritty art style from the graphic novel,. (yes there is a graphic novel and although it is only an intro and a first issue at this moment I would still highly recommend picking it up.) great story elements from the novel and VR demo as well. Also some great ambient music that really add to the feel and atmosphere of the game play. I really enjoyed the fact that I could play this style game with more of a stealth approach although you could barrel through and jump and dash away if you like. There are some really fun moments when you stealth kill an enemy and get treated to some great violent animations plus that refills your health when you do so. I'm hoping for more of those as them game moves further into development since there are only 2 now. And of course when the game opens with a fantastic graphic novel style animated cut scene that really mirror the art of the comic, you get treated to the voice of Solid Snake himself as the games protagonist The Whisper! I seriously got goose bumps when I heard his voice. I have 8.5 hours in this title and it's only a demo. Can't wait to play more!

Eh.....this feels daft reviewing a demo of an early access game, as it's even "earlier" than most games launched under this condition. But it's some feedback for the developers at least, it's free to try, and this might entice someone to watch for future updates, so..... I've given it a positive overall, as it has potential. To be blunt though: they released this demo too early and it has left a somewhat stunted first impression. Sound glitches, graphics glitches, a mouse cursor that refuses to disappear and annoyingly flickers all the time, other irritating game play issues, and totally crashing my pc, are some of the things they really ought to have fixed before releasing this taster. Those are the negatives, and, yes, they will no doubt get fixed in time, but some of my issues with it aren't technical ones. Due to it crashing I can't say just how well they've realised certain elements of the game: it's described as a metroidvania, but my limited time with it didn't show anything along those lines. So for now I'm only treating it as an action game. In that regard...it's okay. It plays smoothly and responsively, and has mild stealth elements, which I suppose are a relatively fresh addition for the genre. Having said that...this is no Mark Of The Ninja, as the enemies can be a bit too twitchy for it to work consistently, and other aspects go against it. It's a flip screen game, so what you don't want to be doing is going to jump on an enemy and unleash "death from above", only to find that instead the game jumps you out of the current screen briefly before you fall back down again...which alerts the guard who has been reset to his previously facing direction, and now shoots you..... It will require a pretty fundamental change to how they display the game for this to work better. Which is a bit crap anyway - why the hell do you still have flip screen games in 2020? It suggests a bad grasp of the Unity engine when you're using a technique that was technologically necessary 30 years ago, but sure as heck isn't in this day and age. This stealth mechanic doesn't make the game unique, and it's certainly not unique as an action game, so they're going to have to improve this clunky aspect of it if they hoped it would make it stand out. Right now it's no better than Blasphemous, Dead Cells, Dark Light, The Messenger and about a bazillion other games, but it plays worse than those - which is going to be obvious as it's fairly incomplete, and they're finished games (or more advanced in their development) The graphics are alright, but there's better looking games. It's lacking any music, which somewhat undermines the impact of the game play. Combat is slick enough, though missing a bit of oomph due to the absence of any score to emphasise it. Dark Light plays just as well, but has a superb soundtrack that makes it stand out when compared to this. (EDIT: This does have music, but it's fairly quiet in the overall volume of the game, and more ambient than exciting / intense / menacing etc. Which undermines the relatively capable level of the action) Storywise it's well told, and has a surprisingly decent voiceover and animated cutscenes. It has the potential to be a decent game, but based on my brief time with this demo (bearing in mind it was short due to it crashing - it might have some mindblowing game play I missed) a lot of work needs to be put into it for me to recommend it as essential. Right now I'd say Dark Light has it well beaten for being a game I'm excited for. I personally don't care for this game. Not saying it's bad, just that it's not my cup of tea. Main gripes: -That opening monologue is painfully edgy -Game feels clunky
Pretty good stealth platformer. Ignoring the minor jankiness which will presumably be fixed as time goes on, it's a solid, stylish game, with cool (if limited) animation, and adorably similar in tone to Heavy Metal Magazine, every teenager's favourite magazine in the 80s. Definitely looking forward to this one. Worth trying out the demo if you have a few minutes.
The mechanics are below average for a modern side-scroller platformer. The responsiveness is also kinda lacking and slow. A fair amount of visual bugs ranging from minor animation glitches to the entire map disappearing requiring a full game restart. Other minor bugs include falling through the floor when you land on it at an angle and taking damage during a stop scene at the start of the boss fight. Has the worst-designed boss fight I've ever seen. I personally liked the visuals. The big map was also interesting to explore.
