About
OVERVIEW
Spanning over 45-years, Stay Alive My Son (SAMS) is a groundbreaking virtual reality odyssey where you are transported into the life of Yathay Pin, a survivor of the Cambodian genocide to witness the world through his eyes, where every decision you make unfolds his poignant story of family separation, survival, and resilience. This narrative is based on the true events described in Yathay Pin's compelling novel Tu Vivras Mon Fils (Stay Alive My Son), making every moment of the game an authentic dive into history.
Made by a small team with purpose, SAMS is more than an experience through the life of one man; it's a bridge to the past, an exploration of the depths of human endurance, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of love and the essence of what it means to persevere, to forgive, and to heal.
Honored with the Producers' Guild Innovation Award and five Telly Awards for breaking new ground in storytelling, SAMS revolutionized cinema history by creating a new genre in filmmaking called “Cineplay.” This genre merges cinematic storytelling with interactivity, allowing you to live the life of a real person with a deeply human and emotive narrative. By pioneering a hyper-realistic digital representation of Yathay and integrating volumetric capture of real actors, SAMS brings Yathay and his family to life inside the game engine, enabling you to relive key moments leading to his family's separation and his quest for atonement.
THE EXPERIENCE
Your journey begins outside Yathay’s home, where you meet an eighty-eight-year-old man, brought to life with a hyper-realistic digital human powered by AI. As light gameplay mechanics guide your path, you delve deeper into the psyche of a father haunted by choices from his past. In a ceremonial rite that intertwines your fate with his, your hands become his; you see the world through his eyes; his memories and dilemmas flood your consciousness. In a surreal twist reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland," you plunge into the depths of his memories, initiating a quest for redemption and understanding.
Navigate the cavernous labyrinthine symbolizing the recesses of Yathay’s mind to uncover the rich history of Cambodia and confront the moments and decisions that have defined Yathay's life leading to his family's separation and abandonment of his six-year-old son, Nawath. Relive the powerful moments that shaped his existence, feeling decades of sorrow and the relentless anguish of not knowing his son's fate.
Taken on a mythical branch, your odyssey culminates in the mystical echoes of Angkor Wat, a metaphorical beacon in the darkness of Yathay’s journey. Here, in the candle lit sanctuary, you'll uncover the final, elusive memory. It's in this moment of revelation that Yathay's unyielding spirit shines brightest, revealing a tale of enduring love and the transformative power of forgiveness.
OUR TEAM
With limited resources and taking over 5 years in the making, a dedicated team of nine artists who were passionate about storytelling, aspired to shape society and culture through technology by delivering an immersive experience with a mission to change the modern day narrative of family separation into one of reunification through a profound, life-altering journey of the heart, made with heart.
Carrying PC's and VR headsets in suitcases, we traveled relentlessly across continents to screen SAMS in over 25 countries and to share this true story with thousands of audiences, technologists, policymakers, NGO's, and Heads of State in an effort to humanize the trauma of family separation and urge people to join our mission to educate, empower, and reunite modern day families torn by conflict. By joining us on our journey to bring this powerful story and mission to wider audiences globally, your support is not only for this project, but a movement of change for these families. Your support serves as a beacon of hope amongst hopelessness, love in hate, and light against the darkness. We thank you!
Victoria, our cast, crew, and team UME
p.s. We know many of you do not have headsets and would like a desktop version. Due to our limited resources, it was only possible to make it in VR and we also felt this would be the most powerful use of the medium. But, we are listening and will find a way to bring SAMS to you! We also dropped the price to help spread the story. Please know, we are doing our best to find the funds to convert this project for desktop, albeit with some adjustment, and will continue to listen to your feedback because you and this community is our backbone.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/kvIykFJlwOo UPDATE 5/18/2024: It seems the optimization issue is for Windows 11. VR gamers with Windows 10 should work fine per the developer. This is a neutral recommendation. I did enjoy this experience. It's an immersive, emotional story told well through the magic of VR. However, it needs to be better optimized. It's running on the Unreal Engine 4. You do have full locomotion and snap turning available. On my RTX 3080, I was getting variable frame rates from 90 fps to 1 fps. Yes, you read that correctly, it did go all the way down to 1 fps. To be fair, most of the time the frame rate was around 45 fps. However, there were two different locations where the frames dropped all the way down to 11 to 1 fps. I experienced several micro-stutters in these two areas and I could not even snap turn in these areas. Unfortunately, there are no graphical settings or settings of any kind for this experience. That's a shame because I do think this is a good experience with high-production values. The game visuals are hyper-realistic and are some of the best visuals in VR, especially with this amount of content. It is an hour long experience. I would say this experience is a walking simulator, like a Dear Esther, but with updated visuals for 2024. Unfortunately, although my rig meets the recommended system requirements, I was still experiencing these issues. I also noticed some issues with the sound-mix. Some audio clips would run into each other and also some of the game background sounds would make the VOs difficult to discern. The only other thing I'll mention is the volumetric video. It is stylized, with parts darkened and parts stretched out, but I think that was a directorial decision for an intended artistic effect. Overall, I do think this experience has artistic merit and I would recommend this to anyone interested in the subject matter. However, you will probably need an RTX 4090 to be able to enjoy this fully (maybe). Otherwise, wait for an update that better optimizes the experience and / or a lower price. Nice VR experience, very touching and captivating story. Tons of little details that enhance the experience. Beautiful art and music.
A riveting experience that will engage all your senses! At first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was completely blown away! You feel like you're right there alongside the characters, experiencing their struggles, nightmares and eventual catharsis firsthand. It's a profound experience that leaves a lasting impression on your heart and mind. After I took off the headset, I was left with a lingering feeling of awe and introspection, still processing the emotional journey I had just been on. One thing’s for sure, it will make you want to learn more about this man and his story.
Stay Alive My Son is unlike any VR game I have played before. The story is the heart of this game, dealing with themes of loss, family, guilt, and acceptance all told through an adaptation of an autobiography about the Cambodian genocide. The game managed to incorporate the best aspects of VR, while still remaining respectful and considerate of the difficult story it recounts. The settings are well thought out, and the pacing allows you to absorb the story while tying in the different themes that the environment brings. VR Interactions with the surroundings also feel very natural, and do not distract or take away from the core message of the game. Alternatively, they add depth and understanding. Being both immersive, but never intrusive, I have found stay alive my son to be a triumph in interactive storytelling.
I am a university professor in interactive media but also a historian so I had read Yathay’s book a while ago but then found out it was made into a VR film via LinkedIn! Due to this being a relatively new program, our department has limited equipment so I was planning on wearing the headset and having my students watch me screen it in class. But after experiencing it I knew that to give them the full effect they have to do it themselves - even if they had to do it one at a time. This film is much more than just a documentary of one man or the history and rich culture of Cambodia but also the tragic years that plagued its people during the devastating reign of the Khmer Rouge. It’s an interactive and engaging lesson on history cloaked in this incredible use of technology to drive empathy by experiencing an array of emotions – even the most intense like anger, fear, guilt, shame, love and hope to spark action. This is how we create change! This is what we should be teaching! Bravo to the creators of this magnificent artwork!! I encourage other educators to include this in their curriculum if possible!
Stay Alive My Son: A VR Masterpiece of Storytelling and Emotion I was lucky enough to experience Stay Alive My Son by Victoria Bousis for the first time at FIVARS in 2023, and I have nothing but praise for it as an exceptional VR experience that blends cinematic storytelling with interactive gameplay. Based on Yathay Pin's memoirs, it immerses spect-actors in the emotional journey of a father forced to abandon his son during the Cambodian genocide. At its core, Stay Alive My Son is an immersive and interactive film that transcends traditional VR categorizations. Bousis has coined the term "Cineplay" to describe this new genre, where storytelling is enriched by the spect-actor’s ability to interact and influence the virtual environment. What sets Stay Alive My Son apart is its commitment to emotional engagement. As the story progresses, spect-actors are transported into Yathay's mental prison, a symbolic labyrinth where they relive his memories and confront his deepest regrets. This transition is beautifully executed, drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland to create a fantastical yet haunting journey. In addition to its emotional narrative, Stay Alive My Son serves an educational purpose. Through interactive elements, spect-actors learn about the Cambodian genocide and its impact on families like Yathay's. The use of a flashlight to highlight key objects that trigger historical and cultural information is a clever way to integrate learning into the experience. The technical execution of Stay Alive My Son is commendable. The decision to use a joystick for movement, rather than teleportation, enhances the sense of presence and immersion, and also prevents motion sickness. The sound design, particularly the musical score, plays a crucial role in amplifying the emotional intensity of the experience. Stay Alive My Son is a pioneering work in the realm of VR, setting a new standard for immersive storytelling. By combining the best elements of cinema and interactive gaming, it offers a deeply moving and educational experience that resonates on multiple levels. Victoria Bousis has crafted a masterpiece that not only honors the memory of the Cambodian genocide but also showcases the potential of VR as a medium for powerful, narrative-driven experiences.
Stay Alive My Son, has truly been a remarkable experience. It’s my first time trying something of this genre, and I can see how this can be used in the future. A friend of mine told me to try the game/documentary/VR experience, and I was a tad hesitant to begin with, but I was like, why not. Truly it's 1000% worth it!!!!! It gives me some vibes of Diablo aesthetics/WoW dungeons mixed in with a much more interactive and interesting way to learn about people’s stories and history. Truly, the application can be used for virtually anything, from education to history to fantasy to raising awareness. Choose your pick. The developers truly created something magical to the point I almost cried twice during the experience. The music in the back ground gave me a Hans Zimmer/LOTR (battle of helms deep where all hope is lost but regained) feel that allowed one to feel the hurt of Pin Yathay and the truly impossible decisions he faced during an impossible time, the Cambodia Genocide. Absolutely unique experience that I would tell everyone to try as it really is where the future is going! Congrats to all the devs of the VR experience!!!!!! 10/10 for its uniqueness, attention to detail and bringing alive someone’s saddest moments in life!
Not going to lie at first i really wasn't sure what to expect but the feeling that you are right there with the character, not just watching their struggles but feeling them was quite an experience. Great job to everyone who made it.
Very touching game and incredibly well made. Would recommend as a VR experience on a difficult yet important subject. Here come the waterworks.
