Disclaimer: I've received this game for free via Curator Connect. StarMaker VR is a collection of garbage ripoffs of popular rhythm games. The way it copies UI and visual style of Beat Saber and Pistol Whip(while somehow looking and playing like a piece of ♥♥♥♥) is just asking for a lawsuit. There are also karaoke and drumming minigames, that are at least somewhat original but still awful. Works on Reverb G2 with default controller bindings.
UPDATE: 7/18/2023 DO NOT DOWNLOAD FREE GAME. THEY HAVE DEPRECATED EXECUTABLE TO NO LONGER WORK ON STEAM.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/LYcXgVLKmR4 So I do agree with the negative review. However, I'm being very generous and giving a neutral recommendation. This game is basically a collection of 4 music rhythm games all rolled up into one package. You have Sing Star - karaoke, Taiko star - One Drum rhythm game, Shooting Star - a Pistol Whip clone, & Blade Star - A Beat Saber clone. This game has licensed music from very famous musical artists including: Lil Nas X, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, & Marshmello. How did they get these musical licenses? Better to not ask questions. The clones are okay, but they're not as smooth or polished as the original versions. There's no reason to play this over the original versions. The Taiko Star original drumming game is probably the worst rhythm game. The hit registers just aren't very good at all, especially compared to the other games. So we're down to the karaoke. I'm a sucker for karoke. Unfortunately, the mic didn't work for me, but apparently it does work for others. Either way, the tracks available I think are drawn from YouTube music. So you basically have an almost unlimited library of tunes to sing along with. You get the lyrics on screen. The pitch register apparently doesn't work though. The cool thing is that there is a recommended section to the karaoke tab and it somehow knows which songs I love to sing without me telling it what songs I like. It's like magic. It knows me. Rate 5/10. Yeah, it's not a good game, but darn it, I love karaoke.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program.
"StarMaker VR" is a godawfully badly made VR exclusive (with support for very few headsets) Guitar Hero ripoff... a music themed rhythm/QTE disaster. Wave your hands around to make it seem like you're involved with some crappy music somehow. Yep, that's what gaming has come to. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Before I played StarMaker VR, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
StarMaker VR is a collection of four different types of rhythm games. You have Sing Star, a Karaoke game. Shooting Star, an on rails FPS rhythm game. Taiko Star, a drums rhythm game. Blade Star, a slashing cubes rhythm game. Each game will have you moving to the music and trying to keep to the beat. Now I am not very good at rhythm games, but I do enjoy them. This one was nice, with its selection of different styles of gameplay. It is a lot of fun having a selection of games, to play around with. This would make an excellent party game to introduce new and veteran VR players to. The controls and gameplay felt good across all four games. I would not say they are as good as the big name VR titles they are copied after, but still done well enough to get you up and grooving to the beats. Its a nice collection of games to keep you busy and challenging others for the highest score in different categories. The game was also a heck of a workout as well, and rewards you with points for play each day. The points can then be used to unlock items to customize your avatar with. If you are looking for a fun party game, or just a variety of rhythm games under one roof this game is worth taking a look at. Even though I sucked at most of the games, I had a lot of fun playing them. It got me moving to the beats and burning calories, and confirmed I have no chance of being a singer. Honestly, this game is good for a free vr game. While some of the games are copied, like Beat Saber and PistolWhip, they were still enjoyable and it's a great free alternative. It feels very high quality and has a great selection of songs. I play on Vive Cosmos and the controllers didn't work for the pistolwhip type game but that's understandable because not many people play on Vive Cosmos and it isn't common for a game to have Cosmos controller support. It's worth it to give this game a try.
