Donnons une chance à cette équipe de passionnés qui ont donné leur 6 dernières années de leur vie pour mener ce projet à bien ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Startflint is a TOUR de FORCE made by a team of 3 people including 1 developer who, in total independence, carried out a titanic project: to create its FIRST video game. The result is quite amazing when you take this into consideration. We are in the presence of a first video game that has been released. This alone is a success in its own right. In itself the game is very beautiful, with polished graphics, the voices are excellent and the whole thing blends very well. The team is obviously very involved in its project with fast debugging and a remarkable availability. If this first part is not the expected point and click, there are good reasons. Every project has its difficulties and this one is no exception to the rule. Now the second part that is coming will be more in line with the presentation made on the kickstarter. Let's give a chance to this team of passionate people who gave their last 6 years of their life to bring this project to a successful conclusion.

A Confusing, Broken Muddle. Honestly the warning signs were there from the Kickstarter campaign. The game was billed as a point-and-click adventure with a customizable base. It was trying to do too many things with not enough money and so it ended up a mess. Honestly re-reading the Kickstarter page, I feel like a big dumb idiot for pledging any amount of money for the combination of the preposterous promises made for the relatively small required funding amount. I didn't pledge a lot, but it was still idiotic of me to pledge at all. Here's what the Kickstarter Game page promised: "Starflint is a Point'n'Click 2D role playing game. The player will always have two possibilities to overcome an enigma, by solving a simple puzzle or following a more difficult path...that will lead them into solving a much more complicated puzzle. And of course the reward will change depending on what path you choose, so if you fancy a challenge then take the difficult route. The puzzles will always be logical, you'll never be faced with anything that can't be solved. The player is completely free to explore the world of Starflint and its 8 various planets in the order they please, you'll be able to get into a discussion with the characters you meet, this allows you to collect valuable clues and progress, both in the main quest and in the side quests. Once a planet discovered, the player can develop their business. Starflint puts you in control of a secret facility." Almost none of that is in the actual product as far as I can tell. (I can't say for sure since a game-breaking bug has left me stuck. Most of my playtime was in the initial release which much of the content was moved or deleted, and replaying the "full" release up until the point where I am left stuck with a bug.) First of all, whatever the intent at the time, the final product is definitely not a point-and-click adventure. Instead, what was made was a platformer game. The developers admitted that they couldn't actually make a P&C from the amount they got from the Kickstarter campaign, which means they deliberately set their Kickstarter goals too low and were hoping that they'd get vastly more funding than they were asking for - which was already a notion on thin ice, because the year before they had failed to fund a Kickstarter for the same game asking for 5,000 Euros more than their ask for the successful KS. Pretty shifty behaviour to promise a P&C adventure knowing that you cannot deliver it for the funds you're asking for. - There are not always two possibilities to overcome something. It's a linear platformer, one solution. - Obviously since there aren't two solutions, there aren't different rewards. - There is no freedom to explore. You cannot visit planets in any order you choose. You cannot choose to have discussions with characters, there are just cutscenes. - I haven't seen any side quests. - What the heck is this talking about "develop a business?" In a point-and-click adventure game? What does that mean? The game has full English voice acting, but the translation/localization from French to English is very rough. It's obvious immediately in the intro, from lines like "The levels of the warp motor then start to abnormally panicing(sic)." Which, while garbled is at least understandable, unlike this: "I don't know what kind of flake balls are, but Vargas' army doesn't go with a dead hand with them!" It's clear that they didn't have a native English speaker give the English text a once-over before finalizing it, or in some cases, even run it through a spellchecker. This really ends up hurting a lot of the attempts at humor. The game starts off with a cutscene of a battle, talking about "at the end of an endless war" which doesn't make sense to me. It seems confusing to not say how many years a war has been happening to that point. Maybe it was supposed to be a joke which didn't land (there are a LOT of failed jokes). The writers mistakenly seem to believe that references to popular culture things are, themselves, jokes. References by themselves are not inherently funny. You move from place to place without little to no explanation. There's no dialogue serving as connective tissue between scenes. You can go from a discussion of the various sectors to suddenly ending up walking into a secured installation and then subsequently escaping from it without any idea why you went there in the first place. You get a teleporter orb at the start of a platforming section, but it's not actually useful until partway through. It seems like it would be useful at the start to get past a series of crushers, but the game is seemingly programmed to zap the orb after it gets past the third crusher for entirely arbitrary reasons. Why? I spent a great deal of time trying to get the teleporter through them before I gave up and just used well-timed jumping. Why give the tutorial on the orb at that point. It would have been better to introduce the orb at the section where it's needed. You have three save slots, and are informed that choosing a used save slot overwrites your previous progress, but the save slots have no indication of whether they're empty or used or how much playtime is on any of them. I wasn't even able to complete the game, because there's a game-breaking bug for keyboard and mouse players which stops all progress dead. You are supposed to use your teleporter orb to capture a blob creature which has taken a key item, but your controls for the teleporter orb get disabled on M/KB after the blob eats your orb. Even more than half a year after reporting it, and the game being patched a few times, nothing was done about it. It was never acknowledged as far as I know. It seems clear that it won't ever be fixed. Because of all the various issues, this game is not worth your money.
Many negative reviews because a point-and-click was kickstarted and expected, but a puzzle platformer was delivered instead. However, the last 1/3 of the game IS point-and-click, but it's a long haul of tough platforming to get to it. The game was buggy on first-day release, but a series of patches is quickly alleviating this problem. The team is active and dutifully quashing bugs. If you want a tricky, at times infuriating puzzle platformer, with a reward of a long level of point-and-click, this is worth a playthrough. If it's successful enough, perhaps the developer will get the money needed to make the point-and-click part 2 they are dreaming of. The characters and setting are fun (and funny) enough to deserve a sequel, and the dev is active and polite (I had to translate into French to talk with them, and they were very patient with me) enough to deserve to make the game they wanted.
Est-ce que je recommande StarFlint ? Oui. Pourquoi ?
Bad mix of different types of games. Nothing really fits together. Many bugs and looks unfinished at every corner. Tried it again after their 1.05 patch. Still a complete waste of time, controls are bad and most of the times buggy (moving crates stops working randomly or not at all).
So I was a BIG Kickstarter backer and I had high hopes for this game, but WOW. This is VERY bad. The translation is terrible, the voice acting in some areas is deplorable, and there are sections without ANY explanation of what to do! Endless mazes, searching for no good reason at all, at areas that were simply thrown together at the last minute without any voicework at all. What was supposed to be a simple point-and-click has turned into an absolute disaster AND I found out that my Kickstarter perk wasn't even added to the game. Very much hating this game.
