If you're a casual - get out of here and go try something else.
People running the game don't care about player feedback. The game is terrible, the community is worse. The playerbase is extremely toxic, griefing is rampant, and the devs do nothing to prevent players ten times your level from chain killing you.
The admins of the game allow rampant cheating and griefing, and even when presented with video evidence of the cheating, they refuse to ban those accounts because they pay a subscription. It's probably better to spend your time somewhere else.

Played this game originally in 2004, came back in 2009, then came back again in 2025. I think this game is way more fun than it might look at the surface. There is a lot of content to enjoy and it's a great game to play casually.
"Star Sonata 2" is a rehash/Weekend at Bernies style "I can't believe it's not a browser game" from a couple of decades ago that's here on life support on Steam as the developers try to scrape a few more bucks out of this non-free product infested with a cash shop and DLC. I guess the best way to see this is an insanely cut down 2D "Star Control meets EvE online", and it fails to deliver on any of those premises because of the horrid monetisation. Understandably there's just a couple of dozen people who play this now, and those people are highly sought after by psychologists wanting to study long term Stockholm Syndrome. What do you do in the game? As mentioned this marries rather weak Star Control type SpaceWar! ripoff game mechanics with the full toxicity of EvE onlines player base and corrupt mods. There simply isn't an aspect of this game that's welcoming to anyone. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. On pricing and value for gamers, this isn't really free as the game is infested with mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. Even after that, this is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer has their hand out a $20 USD DLC (TWENTY BUCKS!!!) for this as you're expected to buy extra DLC just to start the game... it seems like the developers spend more time trying to monetize this every way they can apart from outright charge for it.. I guess that's the MMO model, you don't want to discourage players from getting on, because these games thrive or dive on community. Perhaps if they tried having a less toxic community and a better product, but then I'm not here to tell developers how to make money, I'm here to try help gamers find the best and avoid the worst of games. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.

After being recommended this game from a friend. I picked it up and although challenging at first, but really fun once you work out the basics. The community is unbelievably helpful, and feels close with lots of veterens around to guide or give you a laugh when needed. The UI can feel a bit clunky at first but you pick it up pretty quickly after a clicks. Definitely a strong recommend.
give it a try with a good mentor
Either servers are down, or the game is buggy, because it doesn't let me link my Steam account, and I can't connect. It even shows 0 people currently playing this game (not just on Steam, there is in-game indicator). So, I guess the game is dead.
