great game, some of the mechanics don't age well like plant combat taking too long and not being skippable. but i love the races
Its a fairly simple game to play, but the strategy is very involving especially when choosing factions. The two layers of battle (space and plantary) add more complications. I think it is a great strategy game, especially when playing a total space war against all other factions for domination. Upgrade your Battleships, you're going to need them!
SSI has one of the best catalogues of classics PERIOD< this one is definitely solid

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I completely understand those who buy this & give a positive review because it enables them to re-live childhood memories. It just isn't very good though.
Star General, developed by Catware and published by SNEG, is a turn-based strategy title that reimagines the classic “General” formula within a science fiction setting. Originally released in the mid-1990s, it carries the structure and design philosophy of its era, combining accessible mechanics with an ambitious attempt at large-scale interstellar warfare. The result is a game that feels both familiar and experimental, offering a blend of tactical combat and strategic empire management that reflects its lineage while reaching for something broader. At its core, the game operates on a hex-based, turn-driven system where positioning, timing, and resource management dictate the flow of battle. Each turn unfolds methodically, requiring players to consider not only immediate engagements but also the long-term implications of their decisions. Movement across the grid is deliberate, and combat outcomes are shaped by unit type, terrain, and tactical placement rather than reflexes. This structure gives the game a steady rhythm, rewarding patience and foresight while maintaining an approachable level of complexity that makes it easy to grasp even for those new to the genre. What sets Star General apart is its dual-layered approach to conflict. Battles are fought both in space and on planetary surfaces, creating a sense of scale that extends beyond individual encounters. Securing orbital control is only the first step; players must then deploy ground forces to capture and develop planets. This adds a strategic dimension that goes beyond simple conquest, as each captured world contributes resources and infrastructure to your growing empire. Managing these assets becomes a key part of the experience, tying individual battles into a larger framework of expansion and control. The game offers a variety of factions, units, and scenarios, giving players a range of options for how they approach each campaign. Different alien races bring distinct characteristics, encouraging experimentation with various strategies. The sense of commanding a sprawling empire is one of the game’s most compelling aspects, as it allows players to shape their own path through a series of interconnected conflicts. Custom scenarios and extended campaigns further enhance this feeling, providing opportunities to engage with the game on a broader scale. However, while the scope is impressive, the depth within its systems can feel uneven. Both space and ground combat, though distinct in concept, are relatively straightforward in execution. Unit interactions lack the complexity seen in more modern strategy titles, and the progression systems offer limited opportunities for meaningful customization. Research and upgrades tend to provide incremental improvements rather than transformative changes, which can make long-term strategy feel somewhat static. The artificial intelligence and pacing also reflect the game’s age. Opponents can behave inconsistently, sometimes failing to present a significant challenge and other times relying more on numbers than tactics. This can lead to encounters that feel predictable or lacking in tension, particularly for experienced players. While the game remains engaging in shorter sessions, its limitations become more apparent over extended play. Visually, Star General retains a distinctly retro aesthetic, with simple 3D-rendered units and a clean, functional interface. While it lacks the detail and polish of contemporary strategy games, its presentation is clear and easy to navigate, which is crucial for managing large-scale battles. The straightforward design ensures that players can quickly assess the state of the battlefield, even if the visuals themselves are relatively basic by modern standards. One of the game’s strengths lies in its accessibility. Compared to more complex strategy titles, it offers a gentler learning curve, making it an approachable entry point into the genre. However, this accessibility comes at the cost of depth, as players seeking more intricate systems may find the experience lacking in variety and long-term engagement. It strikes a balance that favors simplicity over complexity, which may appeal to some players while leaving others wanting more. In the end, Star General stands as an interesting blend of ambition and familiarity. It successfully captures the scale and imagination of interstellar warfare while maintaining the core mechanics that defined its predecessors. Although it does not fully realize the potential of its ideas, it remains an enjoyable and historically significant entry in the strategy genre. For those interested in retro games or accessible turn-based strategy, it offers a solid experience that still holds up within its context. Rating: 7/10
