A space warcrimesim that puts Stellaris to shame. If you are willing to sit through obtuse controls and slow gameplay then you will find this to be a satisfying conquest game that appeals to the cruel tyrant in all of us. Hail Zagar!
DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE GRAPHICS! Look: I know this game's ASCII graphics might put you in mind of an early sports management sim, but Starfleet II ain't that. This is an update of a true classic that was way, way ahead of its time in 1989. Nothing quite like it has even been attempted in the past 35 years. Starfleet II 2.0 is a fantastic game. ts;tmm (too short; tell me more): Star Fleet II 2.0 is a starship sim / wargame that challenges you to rise through the ranks of a ruthless, Klingon-style space navy. You start out commanding a lone battlecruiser and doing recon milk runs, but as the game progresses, you're given more responsibility and tougher challenges. One of my favorite experiences (so far) was leading a group consisting of my battle cruiser and four destroyers; we hunted down an enemy Light Cruiser, boarded it, captured it, and towed it home with our tractor beam -- all after disabling a starliner and using it as bait to lure the warship in. That was an early mission! Later missions put you in charge of more ships, ground troops, planetary invasions, etc. Your ship has phasers, torpedoes, shields, a tractor beam, recon probes, transporters...there's a ton of game here. I wish there was a demo; I think a whole bunch of fans of combat sims and strategy games would happily buy Starfleet II 2.0 if they just got a taste of the gameplay.
Found a planet Sent landing party down They raise shields and trap my party I order the party to take captives and kill them cause why not They kill my boarding party I then proceed to nuke the planet I force the freighters in orbit to surrender then take all the crew and rourture them to death 10/10 amazing To live is to conquer, to conquer is to live
sci-fi war crime simulator
To Live is to Conquer, to Conquer is to Live!

TO THE STRONGEST GO THE STARS
Long live Emperor Zae IV!
Casually annihilated a low-tech medieval population with nukes from mid-orbit while sipping on a cup of coffee and scratching my ass. 10/10.
So hard to describe this but is definitely worth it if you like the theme. Be ready to RTFM, but the manuals are great and another enjoyable layer of the experience. The game is hard but also not too hard (I guess it will be in the later missions). The most difficult part is to know your way around the interface and the commands but if your follow the tutorials (reading the manual), then is when you realize... how clever the design is! There are several ways to do things or give an order and things placement is completely logical so, after a bit, even if you haven't read that part in the manual or you don't remember exactly what it was or how to do it, you find out you can do them. Like, I had an engine failure and didn't know what to do but, before going to check the manual, I thought I would try and check Engineering first. And there it was, Damage Control. So I assigned a repair team to the engines and they fixed it! Also, using the keyboard that much makes you feel clever and hacker. But you don't need to memorize the shortcuts! There are ways to go where you want without using them. You just end up learning the most used ones because it's faster. The game overall is massive regarding the options it gives you. It's hard to describe. You have to complete missions before a certain time, but there are several ways to do them. You have **a lot** of options. You can launch probes, scan systems yourself, interrogate or torture prisoners (did I forgot to mention we are the baddies?). Gather supplies or call supply ships. Dock on stations, destroy, disable or capture ships or planets, bombard a planet... even destroy it (yup, we are definitely the baddies)! After the first 5 missions you also have escorts and you will control more and more ships and that gives you more options... But in a not overwhelming way. It's all progressive and the first missions will add complexity at a pace you can follow. What you do in the missions have consequences on the ones after it. And the missions themselves are randomized so if you have to repeat a mission, even if the objective is the same, the map and enemy placement is not. So I guess is kind of a linear sandbox? You play by completing missions in order but how you do that is up to you and also you can do whatever you want if you finish a mission and still have time to spare. Also, you crew is smart and will help you offering options or automating certain things, so you don't have to micro-manage everything. The only thing I find meh is the sound. Being a real DOS game it has huge memory restrictions and the sound was one of the parts that had to be sacrificed. Even for a PC Speaker sound is very very meh. But, again, is far from important. One last thing: the dev plans on creating a modern "Deluxe version" with gameplay improvements/additions and modern UI and controls so, if you buy this game, you not only will have a lot of fun today, but will help on having even more fun in the future too! :)
I am an original player from '89. Glad Trevor was able to patch and fix the game! Plays well and is now playable at the Admiral levels.
If you can engage with the ASCII graphics and the level of reading it tasks you with you'll find one of if not the best example of a space war simulation.
If you ever watched Star Trek and love the Klingons, then this is the game for you. In essence, you basically play the role of a commander large capital warship (and in subsequent ranks, additional ships and even the power to invade). The Krellan Empire is essentially a stand in for the Klingon Empire with the Alliance as a stand in to the Federation. As a member of a warmongering species, this game can easily become a warcrime simulator, allowing you enough leeway to commit atrocities that would otherwise make crimes listed in the Geneva Convention and other historical tyrants look cute. Despite the DOS setup, Krellan Commander can become surprisingly deep for a game whose hardware requirements are literally from the 1980s. Deeper than some other strategy titles I know of. Though the controls would be alien for someone whose gaming experience is limited to modern day games, the manuals located at the game's folder (as well as the subsequent in game lore and detailed descriptions of everything found in said manuals) will be more than enough to help you get started. For new players such as myself, especially those coming from modern games, I urge you to read the manuals as you go through the tutorials. Everything will blow by like a breeze once you get a hang of it.
