People will actually play this game and be surprised it is propaganda, when it literally has ZOV in the title. Now ultimately, given how the game is and its weird payment model all around, is it bad? Well, it is kind of really decent for what it is. Although this is really more of a game I think would feel better on a mobile device than a PC. I really enjoy the concept of the mechanics and the concept behind the gameplay, more than I do the game itself. It has everything I would like in a game, but ultimately, I think it is better suited to very different types of players. I really do like the realistic take on super small, single squad unit tactics. The tutorial is a bore, but when the game actually lets you play, it is pretty decent. There is conceptually a lot of decent production here in terms of art, the music, the somewhat inspired persistent characters and the campaigns. But it is ultimately a glorified infantry manual with some pretty tight control over every single action of a single soldier and that is maddening to some, or all of the fun. Personally, even though I actually am a big fan of persistent, named soldiers campaign to campaign, I feel like that works for small unit tactics and not as much as for literal door-to-door tactics. Which is weird, because I love what Ready or Not does and what more traditional games do, but hmm. Like there is nothing in it, gameplay wise, that I say is mad or a misstep. It has all the right ingredients, but perhaps it is just not what I really want to have. In a way, its a delicious dish but you sort of have to have the right taste for it to appreciate it. Much like Russian cuisine itself, it will be horrible in concept and presentation to a non Russian person, but appreciated by those who really have embraced it or are a cultural inheritor of it. The game very much so is propaganda-laden and it might as well be an official interactive Russian infantry manual, but by that same logic, Arma 3 is literally an engine used to train NATO forces and American soldiers. And as I have stated in other Russosphere jank reviews, I don't think buying or playing this game is going to magically encircle the entire Ukrainian army (and the game is for the most part, free) nor is it going to change hearts and minds, etc. So yeah, its a remarkable, yet unremarkable, tactical door-to-door game where its fun to play until it actually comes to the intended realism. Much like reality, entering a room without full tactical application of every single corner and soldier being utilized, often results in you dead in a doorway. And other times, the enemy, whether they are on "combat drugs" or "counter-stimulants" via sabotage (how the game justifies the in-setting difficulty lol) still means Ukrainian personnel will sometimes mindlessly run around corners without cover and get blasted. Personally, I think the game would be better with almost nameless, persistently generated soldiers that best reflect the reality of the war. That is, many of these people do not survive the day, let alone the battle and while these operations are on a higher end of skill level, it would be more impactful to take heavy, persistent casualties that solidify the cost of modern conventional urban CQB rather than immediately fail a mission for the loss of a significant character. Of course, for a training manual and propaganda, you want to limit the impact of immediate loss of soldiers and to prioritize fellow personnel over everything but primary objectives. But I think the gravity is lost with trial and error, "you lost a guy, restart" formulaic construction. It would be far more persistent and brutal to really show the revolving door of these lives lost in single instant mistakes. Keep the backstories and names, but force the player to live with and adapt to the fact that their squad will hardly resemble anything but the same name by the end of the operations. This also is not the Battle of Fallujah, where a conventional superpower is going to walk in and out of insurgent infested, urban environments with a far superior kill death ratio. Ukrainian personnel are highly trained, efficiently equipped and are equal in determination. They have tactical knowledge and convention kits that mean they often do not need to partake in asymmetrical warfare. Their infantry training ensures no unit walks in and out of a building without casualties. Also, for the sake of realism and for the intended audience, the game should perhaps not soften the blow of immediate squad casualties but highlight the fact that yes, its actually incredibly likely if not inevitable that even the most talented of operator is going to die in these scenarios. So many "character arcs" and stories are doomed to end suddenly with a single careless step into the wrong room, without the right cover, with out the right tactical approach. But for what the game does right, its pretty good, ngl. Its worth a curious playthrough, regardless of your political affiliations. Because once again, playing this is not going to magically win a war in much the same way buying the STALKER games won't magically deliver a thousand javelins to the Azov HQ. The localization is rough though, with rambling marketing descriptions and at times, non-sensical spelling errors, lol. But for what its worth, there is at least an *attempt* to make it accessible.
It's a fun free to play tact-RTS , it's tight, sure it's AGITPROP but what isn't.,
