Spy Fox In: Cheese Chase

Spy Fox in Cheese Chase is an ancient family friendly 1988/DOS era endless runner arcade game running on Steam thanks to the ScummVM engine. Gameplay involves endlessly driving up along the screen and avoiding obstacles. To try bolt something onto this extremely shallow premise for a game, they added a level editor. The level editor does not save this train wreck. This game is over 25 years old, it's ancient. 4:3, fixed resolution (looks like VGA). Weirdly, the devs have patched it from time to time, but this is really like putting lipstick on the skeleton of a pig that died long ago. I know that's not all that nice to say, but these guys are charging $5 USD for this, when you can play free games for kids, with much higher quality, in browsers or mobile, so how could anyone consider paying for this? This is just some attempt to cash in on some old abandoned kids game. It's really not cool.

I think the game's score being mixed is a bit harsh, infact I actually think this has to be one of the BEST Junior Arcade spinoffs Humongous Entertainment ever made, alongside with Pajama Sam Sock Works and Putt Putt Dog on a Stick. So why is it so great? For starters, I think the gameplay is very smooth here. All you do is try to reach the end of each level, by moving your mouse cursor(aka moving Spy Fox) while avoiding crashing into the walls or some obstacles. It's a very simple gameplay loop, but what makes it challenging, aka fun, is how you both have to be careful to drive through narrow paths, while usually also trying to avoid the criminals trying to bump you off into the obstacles. Secondly, this game is great because it's one of the only Junior Arcade games(along Sock works and Dog on a stick) where levels felt like they were properly designed, and not just slapped into the code. Sure, a lot of them are gonna have similarities, like tons of them having multiple enemies going at you, but some levels will focus on less NPC's fighting you and more of the environment being hard to navigate. And some levels, don't even have enemies and yet the level is exciting because the level is designed around very precise movement to avoid tons of obstacles. Lastly, I think it's probably the only Junior Arcade game from Humongous Entertainment with a proper difficulty curve. It's hard to judge, but here it just felt the most smooth, you start with easy levels in the beginning and it slowly gets harder due to tougher level design and the fact that each 10 levels, you switch to one of the 4 new environments, 2nd(lake chase) is tougher than 1st(street chase), 3rd(snow driving) is tougher than 2nd, and 4th(airplane) tougher than 3rd. You get to see each environment 3 times because by level 85, the game starts to switch environment after each 5 levels played. Are there any downsides? Well, a few small ones. The collision boxes sometimes feel a bit unfair to the player but it's hard to say where exactly. Also it's still 100 levels game, so you might be better off listening to podcast or YT video while playing, keep in mind it was designed towards younger audiences, so ofc it's not that hard. Speaking of difficulty, the game isn't really that hard, it has some frustrating moments, like objects that don't look like they should destroy your vehicle and yet they do(like the cake in snow levels and tons of flying junk in airplane levels) but you'll likely easily end up with 50+ extra lives, I personally almost had 100 lives, despite a few 85-100 levels being frustrating. So despite everything, I can highly recommend this game for younger and even older audiences, but only if you're into "slightly more difficult than casual" kinda game, where you can relax, but be slightly challenged by the game from time to time, if you're into super hardcore and complex games only, you'll be gravely dissapointed, but for what it's worth, it's alright.

As with most of this Junior Arcade games, it can get somewhat boring and pointless for an adult. It may have some charm and fun for a little kid, but if not, just avoid.

Great kids game! Played it back in the day, just beat the whole thing on the Steam Deck. It's simple but the later levels do get difficult.

This game can be pretty repetitive. For one thing, we only get to explore four locations, which keep looping until the end of the game. Most of this game's soundtrack is also recycled from the Dry Cereal game. However, one cool thing is the power-ups, which come in crates; these power-ups include plungers, bananas, and pies, which can be used to defeat enemies. And at least they allow you to create your own custom levels like other Junior Arcade titles do. Also, we see more cutscenes during the game instead of just in the beginning and the end. This would ultimately lead to Hold the Mustard having a full-blown story as well; you can try that game, too.

Purchased this in a bundle along with the other spy fox games and I was a bit disappointed with this one compared to the others. I've played every spy fox game as a kid except this one and I was so excited to find out there were more games in the series when I bought this bundle but the game play is nothing like the others since I was expecting anouther fun point and click adventure game but instead it's like an arcade game with levels that are all very identical and not very engaging.
