Spells & Shells is one of those games that immediately pulls you in and keeps your adrenaline high from start to finish. The core gameplay feels incredibly smooth — dodging through waves of enemies while unleashing powerful spells never gets old. The twin-stick controls are tight and responsive, which is absolutely crucial for a fast-paced arena shooter like this, and the game nails it. What really stands out is the build variety. Unlocking new weapons, relics, and permanent upgrades gives each run a fresh feel. You’re constantly experimenting with different combinations, and it’s genuinely satisfying when a build comes together and you start melting through enemies that previously overwhelmed you. The progression system strikes a great balance between challenge and reward. Even when you fail, you feel like you’re moving forward, getting stronger, and learning better strategies. That “just one more run” feeling hits hard here. Visually, the game is clean and readable, which is important when chaos fills the screen. Effects are flashy without being distracting, and everything serves the gameplay. Overall, Spells & Shells is a highly addictive, well-crafted arena shooter that rewards skill, experimentation, and persistence. If you enjoy fast action, build crafting, and surviving against overwhelming odds, this is absolutely worth your time. 10/10 GET GOO GOO ALU
If you’ve ever played a survivor-style game before, you’ve essentially played them all. The core idea is simple. You move around the arena, dodge enemies and their projectiles, and collect various goodies. The genre is extremely accessible thanks to auto targeting and aiming, although you first need to enable it in the settings. After that, everything follows a familiar formula. At the start, you choose your loadout and stage. All eight stages are available immediately, but they are not particularly exciting. Each one is basically a flat arena with different colors and occasional assets meant to represent environments like forests, deserts, winter landscapes, and similar settings. There are no obstacles, and you can walk through everything. Next, you choose between two modes. Survivor mode requires you to stay alive for a set number of minutes to win the run. Wave mode ends once you defeat every wave of enemies. In both modes, enemies attack frequently, and their strikes are telegraphed by red markings on the ground. To avoid them, you can dash, although the ability needs time to recharge, or you can invest in movement speed. Since you only play as a single character, most of the customization comes from weapons and relics. The weapon selection begins with five standard firearms such as a pistol, rifle, and sniper rifle. Each weapon has a distinct shooting pattern. The sniper rifle fires slowly but its bullets penetrate enemies, while the shotgun fires in a wide spread. Every weapon also has a reload cooldown that briefly interrupts firing. During a run, you collect orbs that fill your experience bar and eventually grant a level up. The other collectibles are health potions and magnets, although the action is so colorful and chaotic that you might not even notice when you pick them up. When you level up, the familiar perk screen appears and offers three random options. Perks are divided into three categories, although each roll will always present options from the same category. The most common type is augments. These are straightforward stat boosts for your character, including damage, speed, critical chance, and similar bonuses. Depending on your luck, they may appear in a higher rarity tier that grants stronger bonuses. The other two types are weapons and spells, which automatically fire alongside your main weapon. Augments can be chosen multiple times because their effects stack, while weapons and spells are limited to four slots each. Weapons remain exactly as they are and cannot be upgraded during a run, but spells can. Upgrades come from spell books that drop from mini bosses or from completing certain events. These events may require you to stand inside a marked area for a short time, defeat a number of enemies, or destroy a specific object. Spell upgrades improve things like projectile count, casting speed, and area of effect. The same upgrade can be applied to a spell multiple times. Whether you win or lose, you earn a bundle of coins at the end of a run. The amount depends on the chosen difficulty. Coins are used for several purposes. One option is buying permanent stat upgrades such as damage, experience gain, luck, and other familiar bonuses. Each upgrade can only be purchased a limited number of times so you cannot become overwhelmingly strong, and the price increases with every purchase. Coins can also be used to buy new weapons or upgrade the ones you already own. However, both relics and weapons must first be unlocked by completing various milestones that require many runs. Most challenges involve killing a certain number of enemies with specific elemental spells or weapon types, taking damage, upgrading abilities, and similar tasks. The required numbers are quite large, so it is usually best not to focus on them directly. Relics unlock instantly once their requirement is met and provide strong stat bonuses along with a drawback. For example, one relic may increase movement speed at the cost of defense, while another boosts weapon damage but reduces spell damage. Weapons work differently. After unlocking them, you still need to purchase them with coins. Unfortunately, weapon stats are not visible when you are deciding what to buy, so it is impossible to directly compare them. The only information shown is their unique perk, which is shared by weapons with the same theme, such as burning rifles or shotguns, or freezing magnums and carbines. A better approach is to upgrade a weapon. Once you do, its stats become visible, and you can see how much they improve with each upgrade. After a few upgrades, it is possible to turn a weapon into something extremely powerful.
