The spells that the game shows you how to use dont work half of the time and no one even has this game so you cant get into a game with other people. The only "match" you can play is with a bot which you cant even beat.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/PUUqFSVVRLU I understand this game is in Early Access and that this game may be fixed in the future. However, right now, they are charging you to beta test this game. Even though I got this game for free from the Steam Curator Connect program, I don't exactly think saving $17 USD is worth the time I spent basically figuring out what is wrong with the game. It just doesn't work. You can try casting a spell by "drawing magic symbols." Good luck with that. I got very inconsistent results. Sometimes the spell would work, sometimes it wouldn't, and sometimes I'd get a completely different spell. I beat the bot once. Just spamming the same spell over and over. It worked maybe half the time. Even when it did work, I think I got 4 or 5 different spells. The other times, I was just thrown off the edge of the floating platform. The comic book art-style looks ugly in this game. It has poor lighting as well. It's running on the Unity Engine. I also waited over 10 minutes in a multiplayer "normal" mode queue. It was dead. However, it was probably the most enjoyable 10 minutes while playing this game. Not sure the multiplayer community will ever exist for this game unless it goes free to play. Lastly, there is this game called Wands that does it much better in every way imaginable that is from 2016. [b]Rate 3/10. Way too Early Access. Games shouldn't be released in this state on the Steam store. I wish Steam would do something about this, but they probably never will. TLDR; Worth supporting, but a long way to go. This game is a work in progress, there are definitely some wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Having said that, there is a lot of charm to the concept of core gameplay. I feel like there's a lot of potential and while you may not love the game now, it could grow into something special with support. There are a lot of problems that I will lay out so while I am giving it my recommendation, it's current state may not satisfy you. Here we go. WHAT I LIKE: -Drawing symbols for different spells makes you feel like Dr Strange. It can be fussy and takes some practice to get used to, but a calm steady hand can replicate the elemental symbols with relative ease (More on this below). -Combat driven by glyph drawing places an emphasis on precision that limits the ability to spam attacks. If someone is rapid firing a combination of different attacks then they aren't wildly flailing and hoping the game gives them a pity spell, they know what they're doing. -Neon environments like synthwave album art. Gorgeous and loud. WHAT IT NEEDS (AND IT NEEDS A LOT) -Lobbies or private matches of any kind. Fortunately for my friend and I we seemed to be the only ones online when we played so we kept instantly matching together. I hope the game gets a following and If it does I'll need a way to play with friends, there's no excuse for this one. -The players. Its brand new but like I said, I don't think almost anyone has heard of it -Variety in play-style. It would be better if only a few spells were attacks while others could offer different utilities, or better yet tie spell combinations together like Magicka. All of the attacks behave the same too, it'd be nice if there was a delayed laser, or something that arcs so the opponent has to raise their shield in different angles. For now they all just move at different speeds -A more forgivable tracing system. There are some weird case sensitivities that don't make sense, I think a lot of it is in how much you rotate your hand mid glyph. Sometimes its super forgiving, other times it laughs at your attempt at finger painting triangles
Great stuff even in Early Access! Needed around 30 mins to get used to the casting but after that it was flawless. Great fun and it reminds me of an old Warcraft custom map. Looking forward to more multiplayer battles with people online!
SpellPunk is a truly fantastic game. Although it is in early access stage I believe that this game has a lot of potential and I am really happy to see that its developers are improving it constantly. What I like most in SpellPunk is the feeling this game gives me. While casting spells I feel super powerful, like a real magician. Spells are super easy to learn and I can cast them properly in 95% of the time, still learning how to cast the Shield spell though. I am super excited for the new features. You should definitely give this game a try, no matter if you will be playing it with a friend, or with someone random from Steam.
I was a bit skeptical about this game reading the reviews but decided to try it anyway. I was able to cast all of the spells. The game is really cool and has a lot of potential.
Drawing spells doesn't work.
I am not into writing reviews but I think that SpellPunk is underestimated, that is why I decided to say something about it. I truly enjoy this game. It is hard to find a good spellcasting vr game with beautiful graphics, working controls and entertaining gameplay. SpellPunk has all of these. The game is super immersive. I truly admire that its developers have gone the extra mile giving us the possibility to play with a full-body avatar instead of the usual flying hands. This feature makes me feel like I am a pure-blood magician. I can’t find the words to explain the feeling of winning a magical duel after successfully casting your spells. I feel even more powerful than a Harry Potter wizard, because I don’t even need a wand. How amazing is this?
