Billed as a deckbuilder, this is more like a card-based auto battler where you reroll, draft units, and combine them. Unfortunately, the game is poorly explained and the controls are weird. The mouse cursor "sticks" to things, as if it's trying to emulate a controller rather than a mouse. For example, trying to set the FPS limit brings up a drop down menu, but instead of letting you just click an option, you have to move the cursor up a down. On top of that, it's bugged and the cursor appears behind the drop down menu, so you just have to guess until you get it right. The first run was stupid easy. I had one unit soloing entire teams as water. I just kept rerolling and rerolling until I saw a water unit. Oddly, despite 20+ rerolls, I got the point where the game wasn't giving me any more water cards. I'm not sure what's up with that. Some trinkets don't seem to work. I would take a mana trinket that's supposed to increase my mana and my trinket straight up did nothing. Worst yet are the synergies. While I haven't unlocked all the cards, it seems like cross-elemental synergies are few and far between. Water only works with water. Ice only works with shields. Electric only works with other electric. Etc. That makes for really boring gameplay because all I'm doing is rerolling looking for the same element rather than coming up with neat synergies between the cards. This is a hard pass for me.
Tl;dr - I can see the vision in Spellcats, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The game isn't worth $10 in its current state but with some work and a healthy round of bug fixes, it could really shine. Where do I start with Spellcats? The game is sold as a deckbuilder, but it plays more like an autobattler. You draft units from a randomized pool at the start of every combat, and your dudes battle their dudes until someone is wiped off the field. It's a very simple concept that's only slightly complicated by each cat's elemental abilities. There's no interaction outside of what your cats bring to the field, so the only strategy a player needs to consider is which units they're bringing to a fight. On the topic on units... Well, to be frank the balancing is atrocious. The only element worth playing in its current state is Water, and the only synergy that matters is how quickly your units scale outside of combat. The buy-sell meta is incredibly busted, and there are more than enough ways to go infinite with very little effort. Enemies don't keep pace with your dudes once you crest the midgame, so you'll find yourself outpacing almost every encounter you run across once you have your first 50/50 unit. Synergies are shallow, and cross-element synergies are practically nonexistent. Not that any of that matters because, again, stats are king and nobody is able to keep up with Water. The other elements need something to make them interesting, and there needs to be an incentive to splash (ha) other colors into your squad to make team construction interesting. So, as much as I can see the potential here I can't recommend Spellcats in its current state. The game is buggy, the menus are frustrating to navigate and the strategy is shallow when it exists at all. That said, the game has a really strong sense of style and it looks great, which is what drew me to it in the first place. It's unfortunate then, that the game suffers from such a strong case of 'form over function.'
It could be a great game if it had "alpha preview" in its description. Visual style - 9/10 Game concept - 9/10 Balance - 2/10 Mechanics diversity and cards diversity and gameplay diversity - 1/10
It's a shame to not recommend this game at this current time, because it has a lot of potential, but it's simply too buggy in its current state. The art is cute and the presentation is great though!
Please don't be fooled by the mixed review score, this game is awesome, and a lot of the problems it had on release (a friend of mine was lucky enough to play it on release, I was not so lucky) seem to have been addressed so far. The art is charming, the game-play loop is neat and there is clear effort put into every piece of this game. If auto battlers aren't for you, this may not be your kind of game, but I promise there's a lot to love about this game even despite that. Even the musical score, as simple as it has, captures the charm of the experience throughout, along with the artwork and the gameplay this game is the full package! I really recommend giving Spellcats a go!
At it's core it is exactly what you expect, an auto battler using cards. It delivers on that promise and brutally fails from there. Were it just the most basic QoL improvements missing you could still get entertainment out of your purchase, but even the lack of basics be is just the tip of the iceberg. Bugs....bugs...and oh yeah bugs. Bugs that were present in the demo and were reported are still present in the game. I counted over 20!!! and you are lucky if it's just the visual ones. Most of them are gamebreaking and will suck out the last drop of fun you might have had. If the game offered any difficulty spike whatsoever you would be completely screwed. My playtime is pretty stretched with breaks or trying to fix something like the drop down menus to maybe get the resolution option I actually want or random freezes as such it looks like there is more content than there actually is. At best you are looking at 3 to 4 hours to 100% the game if you go out of your way to avoid most of the gamebreaking bugs instead of taking them in as a "feature". Once you destroy the pillars which can be done in a quick 5 runs you are done with the mainstory. Not that there was any really. You just get quick info that the cats have been freed and an achievement. After that you can bolster your playtime artificially trying to unlock the remaining card drops you don't have yet and chasing a final few achievements. There are no loops, run modifiers or difficulty settings whatsoever. The game is borderline easy which would be fine if there were challenges or any meaningful content after getting your toes wet with the mainstory. If you really want to spend one evening being bored out of your mind and just playing like a sleep deprived zombie get the game on sale. It's not worth it's current asking price until at least the majority of bugs are fixed and there is more to do than grind card unlocks.
