Why did I spend $15 on this game LOL
TL;DR: A perfect game for about 30 hours. Literally. A guilty pleasure for fans of Elite, Wing Commander, Star Wars, and other veteran space-sim series. Its arcade, not sim! This game feels a bit weird. It feels like a late-2000s demo, hitting the same spot as Everspace 1/2, but the production value is… well, it’s a solo-developer project. The story is just above average. Side quests are just enough. The core game loop is satisfying. You fight space fighters, and that’s basically it. Boss fights are challanging at times but - engines, radio, estinguishers, shileds, turretes - works every time. It feels repepetive, but it is actually fun. The leveling system is nice, and the skills are reasonable. As for ships, well… I bought the “best one,” the very rare Rogue. I tried others, but there isn’t much difference besides the special ability. Trading is awful except for “slave trading.” Crafting isn’t great either—there’s always better gear in shops or from loot. Considering the time spent improving relations with factions to get good recipes, then farming anomalies, etc., it doesn’t really pay off. But overall, it’s a gem. You can feel the love the developer put into it. It’s a no-brainer if it’s on sale. I just haven’t finished the last quest (after finishing game). I had an issue obtaining the warp core—it just wasn’t there. So be it. I’m looking forward to the sequel!
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. For people who love truly crusty games.
A few issues with this. If you're going to rely on AI to voice your game, don't voice your game. And the image in the newspaper splash is ripped from the opening of District 9.
