Wow. I just finished this game after spending all of my free time playing it over the last few days and it is a JOURNEY. No jumpscares but the creeping horror still left me extremely shaken at times. The sardonic writing walks a razor's edge between bleakly humorous and just bleak in a way that makes any crumbs of human connection or kindness you stumble upon in the narrative that much more resonate. If you can stomach the high peaks of dread and terror, the True Ending brings the much needed comfort and grounding of what really matters. And I gotta say, I love the 90s styled computer- and web- interfaces, they were delightfully nostalgic.
This happened to my friend Bill once
The shift was alright. Still feel like my 4 work shift was worth more than $1k after taking out my fellow managers, cleaning up damp clothes, being an exterminator, and dealing with the Worker's Union. Especially with my co-workers slamming our carts into people, our mascot peeing on everyone, and our bagger constantly packaging up everything in sight. Honestly, probably gonna resign after today when I can find where I left my body...
RPGMaker games are hard to pull off, especially in a world where Omori exists. However, Sorry, We're Open does the whole horror RPG rather nicely. It is a short game (3-4 hours, and that was with me doing two of the three endings), but despite that shortness, the game makes up for it with horrifically funny writing, cool turn-based combat, and an overall aesthetic that gives that retail scare you would want from a game about a store. I loved it, and definitely find it worth the price.
Absolutely worth your time and attention. It's an RPG Maker game so it's not action packed but it's a very fun meditation on jobs, and their relationship to the people who work them.
This was a really good experience. I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I liked this game. It's a strange little setting, and pretty surreal. Obviously, it deals with subject matter like large corporations dehumanizing and abusing people, but surprisingly goes deeper than that one topic that's been tackled a billion times over at this point. It more so focus' on human connection and our affect on each other, from individual to individual, corporate to individual, and the public as a whole. The gameplay isn't too hard overall. The combat is easy, at least with the staff setup I chose. I never died or lost a staff member during my playthrough.
I have really enjoyed this game and recommended it to several friends. It has elements similar to Earthbound, Undertale, and Omori. The world is much smaller than the three games just mentioned, but the horror aspect adds a fun layer of mystery and intensity.
the short: It's good the long: rpgmaker games are either good or bad imo, this is one of the good ones. The liminal themes and areas were so nice to explore. I was genuinely surprised by the amount of content here. it wasnt until the end of my playthrough that i realized u can just walk down the street and there are even more stores and areas to discover. There is very clearly a deeper story going on that you can piece together as you play. I loved the idea of work being horrifying and it reminds me of the "scared of job applications" meme. If you like rpgmaker survival horror games i 100% recommend adding this to ur collection
One of those games that sticks in your head a long long time after finishing it. Give this a shot. It's absolutely worth your time.
A fun eerie time - an easy recommend for anybody who's worked a dead-end chain store retail job
