I have only been gaming for a little over a year, so I still consider myself a pretty new gamer compared to a lot of people. I am also not usually a huge survival-game person. I do not love games where I feel like I am constantly feeding my character, finding water, sleeping, watching a bunch of meters, and doing nonstop upkeep just to keep them alive. At some point, it starts feeling less like I am playing a game and more like I picked up another full-time responsibility. But Sons of the Forest completely changed my mind. This game has such a good balance when it comes to the survival side of things. Yes, your character gets hungry and thirsty, and yes, you need to pay attention to it, but it does not feel like the game is constantly punishing you. Your character does not just immediately fall over and die because you forgot to eat for five minutes. Instead, you may move slower, have less energy, or not perform as well. That feels so much more realistic and enjoyable to me. It still makes food, water, and preparation important, but it does not make the entire game feel like it revolves around babysitting those things. Without giving away any spoilers, there is so much to do. You are exploring, collecting supplies, building, crafting, finding better equipment, improving your shelter, and slowly learning more about the world around you. It constantly gives you that feeling of, “Okay, what is over there?” or “Let me just go check out this one area really fast.” Then, somehow, three hours have passed. There is always something pulling you forward. You may start out planning to gather a little food or chop down a few trees, and suddenly you are miles away from your base, exploring somewhere completely new and wondering how you even got there. The atmosphere is honestly incredible. The game can be absolutely beautiful and completely terrifying at the same time. One minute, you are walking through this gorgeous forest, watching the trees move and thinking about where you want to build next. Then you hear something. Suddenly, you are standing there questioning every decision you have ever made. I love that it does not always have to rely on cheap jump scares to make you nervous. Sometimes, it is simply the feeling that something may be watching you or that you are not as alone as you thought you were. The sounds, the weather, the darkness, and the environment all work together so well. The world feels alive, but it also feels like it could turn on you at any moment. The building is another part of the game that completely pulled me in. You are not just clicking a button and dropping a finished building onto the ground. You are actually gathering the materials, placing logs, cutting things, and watching your structure slowly come together. It makes building feel so much more satisfying because you actually feel like you created it. You start with something small and basic, and before long, you are standing there looking at this giant structure wondering how you somehow became emotionally attached to a digital cabin. I have logged in thinking I was going to explore and ended up spending the entire time building, decorating, fixing things, and making my base better. I also really appreciate that the game does not force you to play only one way. You can spend your time exploring, building, fighting, gathering resources, crafting, or simply wandering around seeing what you find. Some days, I want the action and the scary parts. Other days, I just want to cut down trees and build something ridiculous. Both feel completely valid in this game. That is probably the biggest compliment I can give it as someone who normally does not choose survival games. This game made me understand why people love them. Is it absolutely perfect? No. There are occasional weird moments, little quirks, and things that may not always work exactly how you expect. But honestly, none of that has taken away from how much fun I have had playing it. If anything, some of the strange moments almost become part of the experience and give you something to laugh about later. If you are someone who normally avoids survival games because you do not want to spend every second worrying about food, water, sleep, and keeping your character alive, I genuinely think you should give this one a chance. It has such a great balance between survival, exploration, building, action, horror, and adventure. It keeps you alert without making you exhausted. It gives you responsibilities without making the game feel like work. It can be peaceful, hilarious, stressful, beautiful, and completely terrifying, sometimes all within the same ten minutes. For me, this was not just a really good survival game. It was the first survival game that made me completely forget that I normally do not even like survival games. 10/10. It is immersive, addictive, beautiful, creepy as hell, and easily one of the most unexpectedly fun games I have played since I started gaming.
