Behind you lies a trail of broken helms, shattered shields. You hold the axe of a fallen foe. Worn and dented, it will suit it's purpose. What lies ahead is still a mystery. Your goal is not.

nice music, nice dynamics, love theme, but short!
This is one of the most enjoyable games I have played in years hopefully the make a second or a dlc with loads of levels
TLDR: It's...fine. I won't refund to support the creator but I'm glad I'm not supporting them at full price. I'll echo the other reviews - the jank controls are a negative. The visual foreground and background items are nice visually FWIW. Shooting trolls in the head and rolling under them is fun... - ish.
I really wanted to like this game. It was on my wishlist for a while, and I recently picked it up on special. Some people will like it, for sure; the system is interesting; it just... feels unfinished. The controls are clunky and unintuitive, and you constantly get turned around. even the smallest action is telegraphed, and none of the movements blend together in any way --neither animation nor effect-- leading to things like going from a "sprint" to an instant slow walk with your shield up. your melee attack, arguably the core move of this type of game, is ridiculously slow; it looks like they're trying to swing a sledgehammer, not a simple bearded ax. I didn't play long enough to find other weapons, and I won't. Tried playing with both gamepad and KB/mouse, both were just plain bad experiences. The gamepad was even worse because while the keyboard inputs can be customized, you can't remap the gamepad buttons, and the default control layout flies in the face of ergonomics. Action is at the core of the game, and the action stinks. There was so much potential for better gameplay here, but it just wasn't any fun to control. Even the hardest roguelike and souls-like games know that the action needs to be good; that's how you hook your players. Fail.

Song of Iron leaves a lot to be desired from it’s unintuitive controls to its combat and its simple puzzles. It does not evolve or provide anything new that hasn’t been seen in similar indie games from over a decade ago. An already short game that I wished was over at the 70 minute mark. The controls are unintuitive easy to get mixed up and accidentally throw your weapon away while you’re trying to fight 3 or more enemies. The game is constantly giving you new upgrades which may make previous upgrades completely redundant most of which you will forget are even at your disposal and only add to the already cluttered feeling control scheme. This game has nothing to say. With an ending twist that undermines the entire game’s theme and confuses you as to why that was the choice that was made. An abrupt ending with an anticlimactic boss fight. The final fight in which the enemy rushed me and I shot him in the head with 1 arrow killing him instantly then the game was over. Visually I think the game is gorgeous had a lovely art direction with lively details in the foreground and background from the look of the trailer the game looked really fun, awesome concept of a viking running through the woods and mountains mowing down enemies. Which is why it saddens me that I was disappointed with this small game.
Fantastic game! I have been wanting to play it for a long time and am happy I finally did. Its short, but as soon as I finished it, I started my New Game+. I just wish I could start over with Thor's Hammer.
As long as you are aware that ... a) it is about 3 hours long (4 hours in my case) ; b) it is *not* super hard combat (decently accessible: you will die a few times still) ; c) it has numerous confusing bugs, but they are cleared when reloading a last checkpoint (which are not too far between each other). I had to watch gameplay videos to know if blockers were bugs or just my mistake. I forgive it and give it a thumbs up anyway because I enjoyed my time, the beautiful visuals and music, the fun ending, and because it was made by a tiny team (one developer, with many artists of course like the composer Will Goss).
