Great game, even for someone like me who barely plays SRPG games.
This review has been brought to you by A Curator in the Making. If you’re interested in games made on RPG Maker feel free to check out our curator (we will love it if you follow it too ^^).
This review is closer to neutral than a positive recommendation. This game is a pretty big improvement over Solenars Edge: Rebirth. Most of the issues I had with the aforementioned game (like the map designs) were solved. The art was also improved. It moved from using the RTP for pretty much everything to custom-made ones, and they look good too. But I have to admit I miss the health bars from Solenars Edge Rebirth. It’s not problem-free though. For starters, there are a few typos in the game and sometimes the menu’s background disappears. Also, I’m not a fan of the way the story unfolds. It’s easy to get a bit lost when you switch protagonists after you finish a chapter. Also, I find those side-quests in which you have to use a different team a bit random, as in those characters are just there to be used for a single quest (or just one fight) and then they don’t appear again. They don’t even give you a bit of background info about them or at least tell you why they are there (unless those characters appeared in Rebirth, in which case ignore what I said :X) Another gripe I have is how counterintuitive the controls are during the battles. I lost count of how many times I accidentally skipped a turn when I wanted to use a spell because I pressed right instead of down. In short, this is a decent game fans of Solenars Edge will like.
RPG Maker strikes again! Solenars Edge II: Aurora of The Seventh Dawn is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This is your usual RPG Maker high school anime club dropout fan-fiction cringefest all about the developers imaginary anime girlfriends, full of all the same awful cringe and flipped assets. The only difference here is the typical anime fantasy theme is replaced with an anime sci-fi/fantasy theme. The cringe inducing fan-fiction writing and flipped assets are all the same. The most comical part of this is the pricing. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. This game is fairly dated at 5 years old... it's showing a bit of age and won't give you a very up-to-date gaming experience. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $10 USD for this. Imagine charging TEN BUCKS for an RPG Maker asset flip!!!!! Talk about delusions of grandeur!!! Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Even after that, this is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer still has their hand out for up to $9 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to buy some extra DLC from Steam... digital panhandling. Like the homeless guys who splash dirty water on your windscreen at the traffic lights. No thanks. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
A story-driven RPG Maker game that, while not revolutionary, delivers on its premise. Its story is full of fun and interesting bits, but it has nothing that elevates its gameplay beyond the ordinary. The combat is a competent implementation of the standard turn-based formula, it can be very fun if you play by the game's rules and do your best to understand what you were given. There is enough variety in the abilities to keep the encounters fresh, even before considering elemental variations. Getting new equipment and weapons greatly improve the party's stats and give you a clear sense of progress. The optimal strategy varies wildly, depending on the enemies, the party composition and the available mana, keeping you from acting on autopilot unless you are overleveled. Bosses aren't particularly hard, but they can't be mowed down mindlessly, especially if you aren't fully-stocked on consumables. Unfortunately, it is not without problems: The game doesn't properly teach you about hidden mechanics, like fire attacks having a chance to lower enemies' defense, and doesn't explicitly tell you when you are exploiting elemental weakness, leaving you to rely on guesswork. Also, monsters' status icons are hidden behind the party's status bar if the monsters' sprite is tall enough and the dedicated button for skipping a turn is one of the arrow keys, making it easy to accidentally skip a turn until you get used to it. Outside combat, the game is full of content. The mini-games and optional areas are either very simple or gimmicky, but that doesn't stop them from being entertaining. Maps are neatly designed and pleasant to walk on. Searching for optional areas and bosses was one of my favorite moments, even if it is easy to miss content while flying around in the dirigible. The story has a large scope and epic proportions, never failing to keep stakes high. The intro feels a little too slow, but it does an amazing job catching you up to speed and introducing the new world to the player. The writing is fine, with just a few clumsy lines and misspoken words, but nothing major. The pacing is weird, but works well for the presented scenarios: epic moments happening in quick succession with little to no build-up, which, far from being a problem, keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story itself is nothing revolutionary, but it works, enhanced by the many twists and turns. This is a good game overall, with much fun to be had at its story, exploration and side content, even if Steam achievements don't reflect that. This is not a game for everyone, but if you give it a chance and ride the rollercoaster, you may thoroughly enjoy it. There appears to have been some drama at some point regarding the achievements of these games. I for one love easy achievements so its a thumbs up for me.
