Sol Dorado Heist is a short mystery story about a woman named Alex Thorn and her struggle with her recent amnesia. With only a single memory of what appears to be her and someone else robbing a casino, she sets out to try and track down the notorious thief, Silent Ace, for answers before the police find them. The plot for this title isn't a completely original idea. Amnesia is used in quite a few novels (and other things). To get the most out of it, you'd have to back it up with good writing and interesting twists. Sadly, I don't feel like Sol Dorado Heist managed to do that. Take the game Heavy Rain for example. It's a mystery game in which the infamous 'Origami killer' has struck again. In it, you play as four different people, you learn their struggles, secrets and motivations. All of them are somehow connected to the latest case. The best part, one of them is the killer, but you don't know this originally. At the end, when that person is revealed, it's a twist, it's shocking. However, once you know who the killer is and replay the game, you can start to see the subtle clues you likely missed the first time around. Their actions take on new meaning to the player. To me, that is good writing. Now, if we turn our attention back to Sol Dorado Heist, even after you know who the thief is and you replay the game, there are no hints. It's unnoticeable; as if the Silent Ace has a split personality, that is never revealed to Alex, until the end of it all. It also doesn't help the fact that Alex is so strongly pointing the finger at someone else and that is pushed in your face. You aren't given much of a chance to direct her thoughts or feelings about the situation. It isn't only the Silent Ace who comes with a 180 revelation. All of the potential suspects have secrets that pop mostly out of nowhere. I'm unsure how a good detective story can work if all of the reveals are unexpected because of the lack of clues. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2466935461 Character-wise, we have the MC, Alex Thorn. She wakes up in a fancy hotel room and decides it's a good idea to try and reclaim her memories right away. It's good thinking in theory. After all, she believes she may be a criminal, or somehow involved with one. Alex had been written to have a very strong self. There isn't much leeway to insert yourself into the character. She makes her own decisions and you are just dragged along for the ride. This would be fine if this game were not a visual novel. These types of games are known for allowing you some freedom with how the story flows. There are a few options that chance small segments, yes, but none of those feels very impactful. She decides who she thinks the thief is. She points her finger at them so strongly, that you aren't given room to explore the other options, even if you want to. She also experiences extreme bipolar when it comes to her suspicion of who the Silence Ace is. "It's 100% that person", then a moment later, "oh, I really don't know anymore". Rinse and repeat a few times. That is to say, the suspect is always the same in her mind, she just can't decide if she is right or not but only thinks in extremes. Very quickly, we meet Detective Carrigan. He's, not so discretely, watching Alex as he believes her to be a suspect in the recent heists. Despite this, and the very basic fact that you aren't supposed to share information about an ongoing case with random people, the detective does just that. He knows what he's doing, but does it anyway. "Oh I can't tell you that- but I'll tell you anyway". Man, if I had a detective that was as easily tricked as this guy, I'd seriously not be worried about being caught... Carrigan is a bit of a joke, both to the police officers he works with and to me. Despite telling Alex not to get involved, he more or less leaves the case to her. Someone who has amnesia and is untrained does a better job than a detective. Carrigan might have done a better job if he wasn't stalking Alex at her hotel constantly like some creepy lovesick puppy. There are a few characters that pop up to become potential suspects. Bennie, the comedian that works at the casino. He thinks his atrocious jokes are hilarious and can't work out why he's barely getting any interest in his shows. Because of this, he unjustly holds prejudice against his fellow performer, Jack Viper. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2466939321 Bennie is seen on multiple occasions outside of the casino as he tries to improve his luck and financial standing with an online show. He's trailed by a sleazy cameraman. Honestly, that guy is shadier than the actual suspects. Jack Viper is an incredible magician and relatively new performer at the casino. He's very popular and his shows are fully booked months in advance. He's hugely obnoxious and over the top. This would be fine if it stayed on the stage but it does not. His dramatic actions demand attention even when he claims otherwise. There is a mysterious man who is always seen lurking around inside the casino but never partakes in the activities. His face is concealed by his hat, only revealing a scar. He wears a long trenchcoat, is rude and a man of few words. Then we have Rebecca, the casino owner. She's obviously very rich from the way she dresses and holds herself. Clearly, with it being known that her casino, Sol Dorado, is being targetted as the next heist location, she's a bit on edge. Rebecca is instantly open with Alex and confides that she is troubled. She manages to say a lot, without relieving much. It's a running theme with Alex that whenever something of note does come to light, the other person is miraculously required to be somewhere else that very second. It's extremely frustrating more than suspenseful. It just comes across as a way to stall an already, short story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2466944189 Throughout Sol Dorado Heist there is, what I assume is supposed to be a dramatic effect. The best way I can describe it is a 'being punched in the face' sound effect and a flash of light in unison. It becomes tiresome and headache-inducing very quickly. This title provides very partial voice acting. Voices are usually high pitched making everyone sound like children. I can appreciate the thought, but none of it matches how the characters appear. And just to be clear, this is a one or two-word dialogue occasionally. As of writing this, there are a few technical issues or small details I'd like to point out. There is no Steam overlay. It's not a big deal but worth a mention. Option for the text speed won't save. The skip feature was automatically set to skip unread and reverted back to it after I quit then relaunched the game. Annoying as you can miss a bunch of unread text if you aren't constantly checking the settings. Lately, this VN doesn't offer you a warning before overriding saves. On another side note, Sol Dorado Heist has the tag "dating sim" on the store page. This game doesn't provide any element of dating at all. It's a very big misadvertisement that leads to the game appearing to be an otome when it's not. Overall, I didn't find it to be a very fun read. The over the top humour left me rolling my eyes more than laughing. The mystery wasn't very well planned out and the characters were a bit too eccentric for my tastes. Someone might recommend it, but I am not that person. Detective VN + colorful characters + decent art/effects = Waking up with amnesia, you are thrown into the casino heists mystery that have been happening. Multiple endings depending on your choices. Sol Dorado Heist is pretty much a VN in which you try to find out who the master thief is. The storys outcome gets decided by your choices only, so there are multiple outcomes to the story, although I liked my first playthrough, I didnt feel like playing it again to try out any other choices, but thats just me. I dont really feel like this type of VN needs to be replayed as long as you get a good ending in the end which I was able to get. However even with that it took me exactly two hours to complete the game and since the game is cheap enough I would still say that it is worth it even if you only wanna play through it once like me. The art and music is both only average/good apart from the character models I liked those. The VN also has very sporadic partial voice acting, which I did like in those few cases as it added a bit of audio and also added to the characters individuality. I also am not the biggest fan of the engine used to make this VN, however everything a VN really needs is there. The only thing that kibda didnt work that good was the log as it always starts at the beginning of the story and you have to scroll down which didnt work all that well. But who cares really ^^. Overall a decent VN if you are looking for a bit of a detective themed story that will be fun for a nice evening of reading. Dont expect anything too much and you wont be disappointed. Sol Dorado Heist is a very short detective story which is only 3 chapters long. Mystery element was very poorly planned out. They didn't give you any clues to go on with. They started to point fingers at other characters hard out and choices in this game did not matter. As a player you are just a tag along who is watching events unfold and it absolutely doesn't matter what you do, it all ends the same. Ending was very rushed. Characters had no depth or personality. I didn't manage to find out anything about any of them on a personal level. They felt flat and lacked dimension. Interactions between them had no chemistry or connections. I prefer stories and characters with more of a personal touch. Sol Dorado Heist just felt blank. Game was so short I don't even know what to say. It left no lasting impression about itself. Music and art weren't bad tho.
Please follow our curator page, Otome Lovers, if you'd like to see more reviews like this one! There was something about this game... I don't know... The allure of mystery? That's why I had to play it! Even though I like these types of shows (Mystery ones) and "Everyone is a suspect", I still tried to use my own instincts... Since I am not good at clue solving or even reading people... Well, I got the right guess, but that only made me feel better... Actually the person who was the "Bad Person"... I actually rather liked that one... Until you find out more... I definitely like the music and the character/CG designs. There are quite a few twists, that I didn't see those coming. It is shorter than what I normally read, but I didn't expect it to be a book length! In fact, it made me laugh and entertained me... I actually got the references, so I believe: money well spent. As for the endings: I like two of them... I can't say which two, but that I like them. It's like one is "Goody" and another "Got Away". That doesn't tell you anything, but meh. Yeah... I'll be around to see if another mystery comes up... Thank you for the game!!! :> :) =)
Sol Dorado Heist is a decent game. Entertaining enough to keep you engaged but not immersive enough to really get lost in it's fictional world. You're stuck with the conclusions the main character makes and once you solved the mystery there's no replay value. The game just lacks some depth that would really elevate it but it amused me enough to recommend it. If you're interested in the game get it while it's on sale.
The flashing lights (which happen every time someone says something dramatic) were giving me a headache and I don't even have epilepsy
